The recent press statement by the Global Tamil Forum which reflected the views of the Tamil Diaspora in the West was a clear indication that Tamil Diaspora are interested in Tamils casting their votes in favor of Mahinda Rajapaksa.Global Tamil Forum (GTF) which mirrored the views of the Tamil Diaspora, has strongly urged the Tamil people in Sri Lanka to use their votes carefully during the January 8, Presidential Election, but it has avoided mentioning to whom the Tamils should vote .
The press release clearly revealed that they were not interested in supporting the opposition candidate Maithripala Srisena and that is why they have not insisted the Tamils to vote for him.
The press release stated that Tamils should exercise their franchise, and in the absence of any mentions requesting the Tamils to vote for Maithripala Srisena, which clear indicate that the Tamils who have been urged to exercise their franchise to vote for the other presidential candidate – Mahinda Rajapaksa.
In a press release, GTF Media Person Suren Surenthiran has stated that the Tamil people have a long history of voting based on principled considerations. The upcoming Presidential election is no different.
The press release further revealed that GTF is fully aware that in the post-independent Sri Lanka, Tamil people have continuously lost their rights under a flawed majoritarian electoral system. Their desire to have a degree of control in the Tamil majority areas was never granted, despite repeated democratic expressions of their wishes through all available electoral means.
Nevertheless, from our perspective, whether Sri Lanka should continue in the same path or whether change should be taken at this juncture to stop and reverse this trajectory is the fundamental question facing the electorate.
Thus, GTF urges every Tamil speaking person, up and down the country, to fully participate in this decision and to vote in this Presidential election.
A few Dispora Organizations’ spokesperson, who wishes to remain anonymous told Asian Tribune that it was a clear indication that Tamil Diaspora wanted Tamils to vote for Mahinda Rajapaksa and that is why they were silent in advising the Tamils to whom they should cast their votes in the presidential election.
