Mahanayake of the Asgiriya Chapter Most Venerable Udugama Sri Buddharakkitha Thera has passed away at a private hospital in Singapore. The Venerable was 85.

Diyawadana Nilame of the Dalada Maligawa Pradeep Nilanga Dela said the Mahanayake Thera passed away while receiving treatment at the Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore.

The Most Venerable Thero was admitted to the hospital after falling gravely ill recently.

The Mahanayake Thera was receiving treatments in Singapore for few weeks and was 86 years old at the time of his demise.

Diyawadana Nilame of the Dalada Maligawa Pradeep Nilanga Dela said the Mahanayake Thera passed away while receiving treatment at the Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore.

He was born on 17 March 1930, in Udugama in the district of Kurunegala. He was ordained in 1944 and has since, as a Buddhist prelate, been of great service to the Buddha Sasana in Sri Lanka and also in foreign lands.

Mahanayaka Theras are high-ranking Buddhist monks who oversees and regulates the Buddhist clergy in Theravada Buddhist countries.

The title Maha Nayaka translates to English as 'Great Leader' and it is considered to be a very important position held by a monk in a Theravada Buddhist country.

Remains of Mahanayake thera brought to Sri Lanka


The remains of the Mahanayake of the Asgiriya Chapter Most Venerable Udugama Sri Buddharakkitha Thera was brought to Sri Lanka from Singapore a short while ago.

The Buddhist Affairs Commissioner requested the public to raise yellow flags and have national flags at government institutions at half-mast on April 12.

Meanwhile the government has declared April 12 as a day of mourning for the late Mahanayake Thera.

The Mahanayake Thera had passed away at the Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore this morning while receiving treatments at the age of 85.

The funeral will be held at the Kandy Police Park on Sunday (12).

අස්ගිරි මහා විහාර පාර්ශ්වයේ මහානායක ධුරන්දරව වැඩ විසූ පාලිපාන ශ්‍රී චන්දානන්ද මහානායක ස්වාමීන්ද්‍රයන් වහන්සේගේ අපත්වීමෙන් පසු 1999 දෙසැම්බර් 13 වනදා උඩුගම ශ්‍රී බුද්ධරක්ඛිත අනුනායක ස්වාමීන්ද්‍රයන් වහන්සේ මහානායක පදවියෙන් පිදුම් ලැබූහ.එතැන් සිට අපවත් වනතුරුම උන්වහන්සේ අපමණ වූ සමාජ හා සාශනික මෙහෙවරක් ඉටු කරනු ලැබීය
