Aug 04, Colombo: Sri Lanka's investment promotion agency, Board of Investment of Sri Lanka (BOI) will sign agreements with four major foreign investors to setup factories for a total investment of US$ 4 billion, BOI Chairman Upul Jayasuriya said.
Addressing a stakeholder meeting at the BOI auditorium yesterday, the Chairman said Sri Lanka was able to secure US$ 1.6 billion worth of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) last year, but the agency now plans to sign more than US$ 4 billion worth of foreign investments with four major companies.
The four major deals will be for a gantry crane factory with ship building facility at the Colombo Port, US$ 30 million Volkswagen car assembly plant, ship breaking project at Hambantota and a monorail and control center.
The BOI Chairman said these agreements would be signed soon.
Speaking about the Volkswagen car assembly plant, the Chairman explained that it is not a big project but it is a footprint for other car manufacturers like Toyota and Nissan to follow.
He further explained that Sri Lanka with the inflow and many inquiries for foreign investors is in the process of building investor confidence and more interested in the quality of the investment than the amount.
However, he pointed out that Sri Lanka attracted only US$ 1.65 billion for the whole year 2014.
He said that to attract and facilitate more FDIs into the country they are now planning to setup 45 economic zones similar to free trade zones, which has more access to labor.

Indian firm to set up an aircraft repair facility
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka has drawn almost four billion US dollars worth of foreign direct investment this year, including one by Colombo Dockyard, and an Indian firm wants to set up an aircraft repair facility, the investment promotion agency said.
Upul Jayasuriya, chairman of the Board of Investment, said that in 2014 Sri Lanka had attracted only a meagre 1.6 billion dollars of FDI.
“Colombo Dockyard has asked for land in Colombo port for expansion,” he told reporters at a forum held by the BOI.
BOI officials said Colombo Dockyard had proposed investing 200 million dollars on a gantry crane manufacturing facility.
Colombo Dockyard, owned by Japan’s Onomichi Dockyard Company, had previously said its expansion plans had been constrained by lack of space at Colombo port.
The port has been expanded since then in a project funded by the Asian Development Bank.
Jayasuriya also said the BOI was in talks with an Indian company which wants to set an an MRO (Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul) facility at the new Mattala airport in the south which had so far failed to attract business.
“In the entirety of India there are only two MRO facilities, so a facility in Sri Lanka would be useful.”
Jayasuriya said Volkswagen, now the world’s biggest car manufacturer, is setting up a plant to assemble small cars in Kuliyapitiya, in the north-west region.
Volkswagen will start exporting cars in two years and use local input like rubber tires.

The proposed Volkswagen plant which is to be set up in Kurunegala will initially target the local market for a year before exporting automobiles worldwide, The Nation Gain learns.
Accordingly, the much anticipated agreement between the Finance Ministry and representatives of Volkswagen International was signed last Tuesday (4).
Initially, the plant will cater to the local automobile market and would assemble semi-knock down units, which would be brought into the country.
However, it is learnt that one of the conditions laid in the agreement was that the renowned automobile firm has to export at least 5,000 vehicles after the first year of its operation in Sri Lanka in order to increase export revenue to the country.
