Sri Lanka gets $2.5bn IMF bailout package

    Feizal Samath

    July 22, 2009

COLOMBO // The International Monetary Fund delivered late on Monday what Sri Lanka has for nearly five months been patiently waiting for: an agreement on a bailout package worth US$2.5 billion (Dh9bn) to boost the country's depleted foreign exchange reserves. The IMF managing director, Dominique Strauss-Kahn, said a staff mission reached an agreement with the Sri Lankan authorities on an economic programme backed by a credit line to overcome short-term difficulties, known as a stand-by arrangement, of $2.5bn, the biggest ever received by Sri Lanka.

Sri Lankan government seeks IMF bailout

By Thusitha Silva and Saman Gunadasa
    17 March 2009

Confronting a worsening foreign exchange crisis, the Sri Lankan government is seeking a $US1.9 billion loan from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to bail out the country. The island's foreign reserves fell from $3.5 billion last July to just $1.7 billion in December as export earnings fell, foreign investors pulled out and the Central Bank spent millions of dollars to stem the depreciation of the rupee.

The December figure is enough to cover just 1.5 months of imports—one of the worst positions of any emerging economy. Last month, Fitch Ratings downgraded its outlook for Sri Lanka to negative, warning that it could run out of cash to cover the current account deficit without a drop in imports or a devaluation of the rupee.

Sri Lanka seeks new IMF loan as investments falter

    Friday 4 January 2013

COLOMBO: Sri Lanka intends to ask for another loan from the IMF of $ 1 billion after foreign investments in infrastructure failed to materialize in the island, a top official said.
The government will discuss borrowing another billion dollars from the International Monetary Fund this year after drawing down a previous $ 2.6 billion IMF bailout loan six months ago, Treasury chief Punchi Banda Jayasundera said.
“We are asking the IMF to extend budget support,” Jayasundera said in Colombo, explaining that the money would be used for government spending.
