Alberto Moreno back at Sevilla? Defender's Wikipedia page edited after Europa League horror show

    3190412_heroa.jpg

Even Alberto Moreno’s Wikipedia page didn’t escape the wrath of Liverpool fans after his horrendous display in the Europa League final.

The Spanish left-back’s woeful defensive display was at the heart of Liverpool’s second-half collapse which allowed Sevilla to secure a 3-1 victory in Basel.

Fans took to Twitter to vent their anger towards Moreno, while Liverpool legends Jamie Carragher, Michael Owen and Steve McManaman all criticised the 23-year-old’s performance.

But one Liverpool supporter went even further to edit Moreno’s Wikipedia page to claim that he returned to Sevilla for one night only.

Owen: Only Barca & Real Madrid above Liverpool

    michael-owen-cropped_1e7qzc8p8jvli11gzhkqxusfqt.jpg

Former Liverpool star Michael Owen has claimed that almost any player in the world would like to move to Liverpool, with only Barcelona and Real Madrid bigger clubs.

The Reds failed to break a four-year trophy drought on Wednesday evening as they went down 3-1 to Sevilla in the Europa League final.

The 2011-12 League Cup was the last silverware lifted by the Anfield side, but Owen still sees them as challengers to the last two Champions League winners.

"When you look at it in the cold light of day, who are bigger and better than Liverpool, who can you go to, " the ex-striker wondered on BT Sport after the final, when asked if the club could struggle to attract new talent due to their lack of European football next season.

"Barcelona and Real Madrid could attract anyone, I suppose, but after that, where else is there to go?

"I cannot imagine there is anywhere else in the Premier League."

Klopp: I have never had a bad decision go my way in a final

    jurgenklopp-cropped_q7xjrmrd3rdy1e69ltr4frdgb.jpg

Jurgen Klopp said he has never been on the right side of a wrong decision in a final after his Liverpool team lost 3-1 to Sevilla in the Europa League final on Wednesday.

In his post-match news conference, Klopp was asked by a German reporter for his thoughts on Andujar Coke's second goal after the referee overruled his linesman on an offside call.

Replays later showed that the ball had clearly come off Philippe Coutinho into the attacker's path but Klopp said it was the first time had ever seen a referee overrule his linesman.

"I've had a lot of games as a coach but it is not that often that a referee overrules the linesman," the German said."But right after the match someone said it was the right decision because Coutinho has played the pass."

Klopp said he felt like he never had luck in finals, having seen at least two penalty appeals waved away in the first half."You speak German so I guess you've seen some finals with me," he said."I've lost some finals in the last years and no wrong decision was in my favour… in no final! But this will change for sure. We just need more finals.

"But today … there were two decisions which were not in our favour."But at the end the first thing to do is to be self-critical. And I'm not finished with that."

Heartbroken Sturridge ready to kick on for club and country

    danielsturridge-cropped_w7s22r0sokf3100qxo2euy1q5.jpg

Daniel Sturridge urged Liverpool to develop a winning mentality after they suffered Europa League heartbreak against Sevilla.

England striker Sturridge scored a magnificent opener to give Liverpool a half-time lead, but Sevilla stormed to a third consecutive crown with three unanswered goals in a stunning second-half display.

The reverse followed February's League Cup final loss, where Liverpool missed out against Sturridge's former club Manchester City, and the 26-year-old found the latest defeat at Basle's St Jakob-Park tough to stomach.

"They played well in the second half and it was nice to score, but at the same time you want to come away with a winner's medal," he told Sky Sports."We worked hard out there, but to lose the game is heartbreaking. But that's football. When you lose in two finals it's hard to take and you just have to take it on the chin."

Sturridge endured an injury plagued season at club level, but insists he is "good to go" for England's Euro 2016 campaign having been selected in Roy Hodgson's provisional squad this week.

"The Euros are coming up and then it's pre-season," he added."For England I will do my best and then next season we will go into that with a mentality to be the winner."

Revealed: The decision-maker behind Zlatan's next move

The prospects of Zlatan Ibrahimovic joining Manchester United after departing Paris Saint-Germain at the end of his contract in the summer are shrinking - with the striker's wife ready to veto a move to the Premier League side.

Helena Seger, a former high-powered businesswoman in Sweden, may not have the deciding say in the 34-year-old's future but she holds significant sway and does not want to move to Manchester.

Seger would like to live in a major city, and most notably one in the United States, as her new A-Z sportswear brand prepares for launch on June 7.It has also been reported that Ibrahimovic has a concrete proposal from the MLS worth £400,000 per week – the same figure that he earns in Paris.

Lacazette could replace Ibrahimovic at PSG, says brother

    alexandre-lacazette_1canmgv1a1zp91wbjdknkkbejr.jpg

The brother of Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette says he could join Paris Saint-Germain as a replacement for Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Sweden star Ibrahimovic will leave Parc des Princes when his contract expires at the end of the season, and rumours in the French media have claimed that Lacazette is manager Laurent Blanc's intended target to fill the void in attack.

The 24-year-old, who has scored 23 goals in all competitions this season, has also been linked with a move to West Ham, who are expected to invest heavily in their playing squad ahead of a first season at the Olympic Stadium.

But Benoit Lacazette, the striker's brother and advisor, expects PSG to renew their interest and would not rule out the prospect of a move to the Ligue 1 champions.

"Paris's interest was apparent last year. After the departure of Zlatan, they'll look to reinforce that area," he said, as quoted by Le Parisien."It's not impossible that Alexandre will go there, but it's not a certainty. We're not closing any door. For the moment, we're looking."

Lyon secured a second straight season in the Champions League after finishing second in Ligue 1, and Lacazette's brother believes it would take a significant offer to prise him away from the club.

"Lyon will play in the Champions League," he said. "Until the end of May, French or foreign clubs who are interested are allowed to contact Alexandre's agent. "He doesn't want to leave for the sake of leaving. Things will be determined when he is finished with France.

"Everything depends on who the coach is and what the project is. Last year, it wasn't conceivable that Alex would join a club who didn't play in the Champions League.

"This year, it's the same, although you can never say never."

'I'm waiting for Van Gaal to keep his word' – Pereira frustrated by lack of game time at Man Utd

    1681972_heroa.jpg

Manchester United midfielder Andreas Pereira has claimed that manager Louis van Gaal broke a promise to him in January as he was persuaded to remain at the club under the pretence that he would be given more regular action.

The Belgian-born player has only played 80 Premier League minutes this term and has confessed that being overlooked by Van Gaal has been a frustrating experience.

"I wanted to be loaned out in January in order to play more and to keep developing myself, but Van Gaal told me that he did not want me to be loaned out. He told me to stay in Manchester because he would use me and that I would play," the 20-year-old told Goal.

"I told him that was fine, and that if I could stay and play then I would. He did not let me leave. I took the decision and now I'm training, doing my job and waiting for him to fulfil his word."Of course I expected to play more. I think that I deserved the chance. I did well in the games that I had the opportunity to play, but football can be like that.

"My manager has not given me this opportunity yet and I will keep working hard, waiting for the chances. If they've not come this year, then maybe the next, but I'll be ready. I'm very calm because everyone sees that I'm playing well and that I deserve my shot."

Brazil Under-23 international Pereira reserved praise for Sir Alex Ferguson, who signed him in 2011, and believes it was always going to be tough for his successor, with first David Moyes and now Van Gaal struggling to meet expectations."Ferguson was an outstanding manager," Pereira explained. "The respect he had in the club was extraordinary. Everywhere he went in the club, you could feel the respect for him. And he is very humble, honest and a good person.

"He greeted everyone and it was funny because wherever he went, everyone was quiet and you felt that he had that very large presence. I never forgot this, and that's why I think that is difficult for any coach, not only Van Gaal or Moyes, but anyone, to make a difference after a coach like Ferguson.

"For me, he was the best coach in the world. To stay almost 30 years at a club is very rare, so it's almost impossible for another coach to arrive and to do the same as him, or to do it better. But this pressure will always exist."

Van Gaal: Fans more concerned about winning the title than me!

    3147892_heroa.jpg

Louis van Gaal claims Manchester United fans are more concerned than him about winning the Premier League.

United missed out on a top-four finish in the Dutchman's second season in charge at Old Trafford, despite an outlay of over £100 million on the likes of Anthony Martial, Morgan Schneiderlin and Memphis Depay last summer.

Unsatisfied by the club's results and performances - having last won the league three years ago - some supporters have voiced their frustrations towards the head coach at times throughout the 2015-16 campaign.

Speaking ahead of United's FA Cup final clash with Crystal Palace on Saturday, Van Gaal confessed winning trophies is in the blueprint of the club but says he isn't as fixated on winning the league as he believes supporters are.

"I think the fans are more concerned about the title than I," the former Barcelona coach told the club's official website.

"We want to give it to them because they were always there and, in my opinion, unconditional because they have never let us down. "A club like Manchester United needs silverware. You have read that the whole season. We need that and the players need that also."

Van Gaal's tenure at the club has coincided with the squad suffering several lengthy injuries but claims he has a positive selection dilemma this weekend, following Marouane Fellaini's return from suspension alongside fitness boosts for Marcos Rojo and Matteo Darmian.

"I work a year with 27 players - all the 27 try to do their utmost best," he said.

"I believe in that and then you have to say to a player he is not invited for the squad. He has to come to the stadium. That is not nice. They have all worked very hard. I do this individually, always, you cannot do it with the group."

Rashford can become a superstar, claims Pereira

    3121552_heroa.jpg

Manchester United youngster Andreas Pereira has tipped team-mate Marcus Rashford to become a superstar on the back of his explosive start in the Premier League.

Rashford, 18, scored twice on his debut against Arsenal and his total of eight goals in 17 first-team appearances has earned him a place in Roy Hodgson’s provisional 26-man England squad for Euro 2016.

He is likely to start in attack for United in the FA Cup final against Crystal Palave and even Pereira, who has played with the striker at reserve and youth level, has been taken aback by his instant impact.

“I think he has the potential to be a superstar,” the Brazil Under-23 international told Goal. “He is very young, but has a lot of talent too.“If he keeps playing this way, with this hunger for goals, and stays humble and learning things, I think that he can be one of the best in the world.

“Everyone at the club knew he was a good player, very talented, but it was a surprise when he stepped in and scored four goals in his first two games. No one even expected that he would play, so it was very surprising even for us who knew him.”

Pereira also backed Memphis Depay to improve after a disappointing first season at Old Trafford – even if he has threatened to take his former PSV team-mate’s No.7 shirt.

“I’ve joked with him about it,” the 20-year-old midfielder said. “He is a very talented player and he can still give a lot to the club.“I think he will be a big star not only for Manchester, but for the Dutch national team as well. He has exceptional talent.

“It’s normal for you to play well in a match and then have a fall of production in the next game in the first year – he’s still getting used to a new life and a new country.
“It’s to be expected what he’s going through, and he will pass through this phase and become even stronger. He will be a superstar.”

Van Gaal: FA Cup triumph essential for Man Utd

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal says winning the FA Cup is essential for the club as a whole, not just for his own future.

Aside from the Community Shield three years ago, United have not won a piece of silverware since Sir Alex Ferguson secured the Premier League title in his final season in charge in 2012-13.

Van Gaal's position has come under increased scrutiny throughout the campaign, with United missing out on a Champions League place and having drawn heavy criticism for a cautious style of play.

But the former Bayern Munich and Barcelona boss says beating Crystal Palace in Saturday's final at Wembley means much more to the players and fans than it does to his chances of keeping his job.

"I think the interest of the club is much more important, and the interest of the fans," he said on Thursday. "You put your own aims, of course, and that's one of the aims I've always had.

"I think the fans are more concerned about the title than I am because a title for the fans is fantastic and we want to give it. I said that in my speech on the pitch. They were always there, unconditional. They've never let us down. They deserve it more than anyone else."A club like United needs silverware. We need it and the players need it also. That's why it's so convenient when we win.

"It's always exciting when you are so close but close is not enough - you have to win it."I've read that the last FA Cup was 2004 so it's a long time ago. So for Manchester United, it's a big title, especially now.

"For me, that's not the most interesting point. The most interesting point is that we're able to win something and now we can. But still, you have nothing when you don't win.

"It's always important to win silverware. Qualification is not a title - a title is the FA Cup, the championship. For players, it's very important, because they can hold the cup, and that's an exciting moment. Especially in England, because the FA Cup is a big title. It's the most prestigious temple of England."

Van Gaal believes that away victories against Shrewsbury Town, Derby County and West Ham prior to the 2-1 semi-final win against Everton underline that his side would be worthy winners of the FA Cup.

"We have played four of the six matches away, so we deserve to win, I think, because when you win away at West Ham United, for instance, it's fantastic," he said. "Although Crystal Palace beat Tottenham, so it's deserved for them to be in the final."

Van Gaal - who will have Marouane Fellaini back from suspension and Marcos Rojo and Matteo Darmian fit again - admits it will be tough to leave certain players out of the side but considers the occasion to be a vital learning curve for the youngsters in the squad.

"There are many players there. Fellaini is not suspended, Rojo and Darmian are not injured any more. There are a lot of fit players," he added. "That's more difficult for me because now I have to disappoint a lot of players.

"It's also why we need matches at this level - it's an education for young players. You have to win, and you have to cope with that pressure."

Xhaka 'flying to London' for Arsenal talks, says friend

    2591442_heroa.jpg

Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Granit Xhaka is flying to London to seemingly complete his transfer to Arsenal, a friend close to the player has revealed.

The Bundesliga side confirmed on May 17 that they had received an offer for the midfielder, with that news coming after Goal revealed that that Xhaka had agreed personal terms with the north London giants.

Arsenal have now seemingly agreed to meet Gladbach's €30 million asking price and journalist and close friend Artan Muhaxhiri has confirmed on Facebook that Xhaka is travelling to England to finalise the move.

Posting on social media alongside a picture of the Switzerland international, he wrote: "BREAKING NEWS: Just confirmed. Granit Xhaka is traveling to London to finalize an agreement with Arsenal FC! Congrats Granit ‪#‎XhakaGooner‬."

Muhaxhiri later confirmed to Goal that the family are planning to travel to London on Friday, with Xhaka set to arrive in the capital with both his parents.

Lewandowski: Hummels is world class & he's come to Bayern to win titles

    3194902_heroa.jpg

Robert Lewandowski is looking forward to welcoming "world class" Mats Hummels to Bayern Munich and believes he decided to join the Bundesliga champions in order to win titles. The Borussia Dortmund centre-back has risked the wrath of supporters at Signal Iduna Park by chosing to follow the path both Lewandowski and Mario Gotze have taken in joining their fierce rivals.

Lewandowski is excited at the prospect of Hummels lining up alongside Jerome Boateng, however, and believes the 27-year-old has made the decision to move on in a bid to claim silverware."He is one of the best central defenders in the world," Lewandowski told Goal. "He passes the ball upfield very well.

"If Mats and Jerome play together, it could have a very good impact on our attack. Both have brilliant vision, both can play long diagonal passes between the lines. Our attacking game as a team can improve."But both have qualities in defence as well, that's for sure. I am looking forward to playing with Mats. I've already played with Mats for four years. I think he just wants to win titles now."

Pep Guardiola will leave Bayern having fallen at the semi-final stage of the Champions League for the third consecutive season, this time at the hands of Atletico Madrid.

Lewandowski admitted their defeat to the Spanish side was a bitter disappointment but believes completing a league-and-cup double by beating Dortmund in the DFB-Pokal final will represent a successful season."Of course we were deeply disappointed [not to reach the Champions League final] but that's football," he reflected. "Such things can happen but you move on after that.

:yes:De Gea: This was my best season, but we need to win FA Cup

    daviddegea-cropped_chewp47xlssq1vrpm0kflbo8m.jpg

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea said he has had the best season of his career so far, but wants to cap it off with silverware in Saturday's FA Cup final.

De Gea almost departed Old Trafford on the final day of the transfer window last year only for his move to Real Madrid to be scuppered after the relevant paperwork was not completed on time. But he has not let the transfer drama distract him, putting in some remarkable performances to help Untied to a fifth-place Premier League finish and an FA Cup final.

He won the United Player of the Year award for a record third-time running, was voted into the PFA Player of the Year and was seconds away from taking a share of the Premier League Golden Glove award only for a last-minute own goal in the final game of the season against Bournemouth to wreck that in a superb individual season.

"It's been the best season of my career," said De Gea. "I'm in great shape physically and mentally I'm very focussed."If we win the FA Cup it will be a good season. We are all really keen to win such an important trophy for this club, our supporters and ourselves. We will fight to the end and do everything we can to win it."

The Spain international said winning the FA Cup would prove the best possible way to end another tough season at Old Trafford and provide the platform for improved fortunes next term."We've had a couple of difficult seasons so we are really determined to win the cup," he added.

"And winning it could provide us with that extra belief and motivation to hopefully go on and achieve great things."

Laporte has not said he wants to leave - Urrutia

    aymericlaporte-cropped_15mwsoqfasc9s1baz6boqx6v8t.jpg

Athletic Club president Josu Urrutia has insisted Aymeric Laporte has not asked to leave the La Liga side amid interest from Manchester City.

The Premier League side are reportedly ready to make Laporte - under contract until 2019 with a €50 million buyout clause - one of Pep Guardiola's first singings ahead of next season, despite the French centre-back still recovering from a broken leg and dislocated ankle. But Urrutia denied the 21-year-old is seeking a move away from San Mames.

Urrutia added: "The way the club works is to give as few clues as possible and work discretely."Neither Laporte nor any other player has told me he wants to leave Athletic," Urrutia said."In these five years I think the message Athletic has put out is that we are not a selling club.

"With Laporte, or whoever, we treat them so they feel important and valued. He knows he's important for the coach, that his team-mates value him, the fans love him and the board are enamoured with him."

Lewandowski: Guardiola gave everything & he HAS been a Bayern success

    3194892_heroa.jpg

Bayern Munich forward Robert Lewandowski has heaped praise on departing manager Pep Guardiola, insisting that he gave his all for the club and should not be criticised for failing to win the Champions League.

The Spaniard will join Manchester City following the DFB-Pokal final against Borussia Dortmund on Sunday and leaves the German champions having won three Bundesliga titles in a row.Success in the Champions League has eluded Guardiola but Lewandowski believes that his Bayern reign should be viewed in a positive light despite the high expectations that accompanied his appointment.

"When Pep came to Bayern, 90 per cent of the people thought he had to win the Champions League," the striker told Goal.

"No matter what he won beside it, it would not be good enough. But if you look at the fact that he won the Bundesliga three times in a row, won the German Cup twice - hopefully - then it's a good performance.

"People think that Pep is one of the best coaches in the world. That's why they expect him to win the Champions League every season. But that's impossible.

"If he stayed one or two more years, he would likely win it. But to reach the semi-finals three times in a row is a good performance. He gave everything and fought until the end.

"I have never noticed Pep thinking about Manchester City. He is always focused, during training sessions and during the matches. No matter how successful we are, he only thinks about the next match."The question is whether it was the right decision in the winter to go out and say that he was going to leave. But that's not my issue.

"I can only say that every player – no matter how long he was with us – has learned a great deal from Pep. He improved every single player."

Lewandowski admitted that Guardiola's replacement, Carlo Ancelotti, has big boots to fill but is confident Bayern will continue to win titles under the former Real Madrid boss.

"I have not been in contact with him yet, but I know that he is a great coach and a great guy," he continued. "He has coached big teams and he has won many trophies. He will bring something new, something fresh."When a new coach signs for Bayern, he knows he has to try to win everything. That's not easy. But I am sure that with Ancelotti, Bayern can continue to play well and win trophies. I am interested in what he will do and I'm looking forward to meeting him.

"Every coach has his own ideas, his own vision. It was 'Pep football' recently, now Ancelotti will come with his own tactics. It is very likely that we will play slightly differently in the upcoming season, I am pretty sure about that.

"Guardiola's footsteps are big. I can only say good things about Guardiola. These two years with him have been a great time, and I have learned many things."

Revenge is not at the forefront of Atletico Madrid's mind as they prepare to lock horns with Real Madrid in the Champions League final, insists Spanish midfielder Saul.Atletico and Madrid will go head-to-head in Milan on May 28 in a rematch of the 2014 decider.

Madrid triumphed 4-1 after extra time in the final in Lisbon two years ago, but Saul claims his team-mates are not seeking revenge as Atletico bid to win a maiden Champions League title.

"If Real Madrid are a superior team, they will need to prove it on the field," he told Radio MARCA on Thursday."The final in Milan is not a rematch of Lisbon, or a chance for revenge, but rather it is a chance to make history.

"We know that Madrid are a tough team. It will be very difficult [but] I only think about winning."

No comparison between Van Gaal & Sir Alex - Pallister

Gary Pallister has told Goal he sees no similarities between Louis van Gaal’s quest for a first trophy with Manchester United in Saturday’s FA Cup final and Sir Alex Ferguson’s maiden triumph against Crystal Palace in 1990.

United face Palace at Wembley in a repeat of one of the competition’s most memorable finals 26 years ago, with centre-back Pallister one of their heroes as they twice came from behind to draw 3-3 before recording a 1-0 replay win.

But the former England star believes that the Dutchman finds himself in a very different position on Saturday to that which found the Scot seeking a first piece of silverware in 1990.

“I don’t think there are any similarities. Back in those days United were a cup team anyway. We did get to our fair share of cup finals without really threatening in the league,” said Pallister.

“There was a new set of players coming through and the manager had spent a lot of money on players and that piece of silverware was evidence it was beginning to work.”And contrary to popular belief, Pallister insists the club would have persevered with Ferguson regardless of the result at Wembley.

“Alex was going to get the time anyway. I don’t think he would have lost his job if we had lost that cup final. There were a lot of positive things going on around the club and the gaffer was overseeing all that,” he added.“Chairman Martin Edwards and Bobby Charlton could see what he was doing and they were backing him win, lose or draw.

“In terms of the result, it gave the team and supporters a burst of belief and in that respect it was pivotal. If you keep winning trophies it makes you hungry for more. I think we won trophies for the next few years and that was the catalyst.”

While United are favourites to take home the trophy this season, they were even shorter odds in 1990. Yet Pallister insists there was no way they were ever going to take Palace lightly.“We were never going to underestimate them even though they did blow a bit hot and cold. They also lost 9-0 to Liverpool that season, so they were inconsistent, but they were dangerous from set pieces," he added.

“They were particularly obsessed in the replay with trying to put Les Sealey out of the game. Les had come in when the boss dropped Jim Leighton after the first game. There were a lot of physical challenges, particularly early in that second game and they forgot about their own game plan.“The second game was an easier game – they had few chances.”

A win for United would see them equal Arsenal’s record of 12 FA Cup successes, while Palace are competing in only the second final in their history.

Pogba: I want to be Messi, Ronaldo, Zidane and Vieira all in one

Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba wants to take the qualities from players such as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in order to become a new kind of complete midfielder.

The France international has developed into one of the most-coveted players in Europe since joining Juventus from Manchester United in 2012, in which time he has won four Serie A titles.Pogba scored eight goals in 35 league appearances this campaign and set up a further 12, but he is determined to contribute even more.

"I want to become the complete player," Pogba told ESPN. "I want to do everything: defend, attack, score, give assists, tackle, win back the ball. Be a leader on the field.

"I want to become a new midfielder. From defensive midfielder to attacking midfielder to attacker. I want to take the qualities from everyone.

"Cristiano, Ronaldinho, Messi, everyone. Andres Iniesta. I'm serious. All players rolled into one. I'd like to get to the level where I have everything: Patrick Vieira, Didier Deschamps, Zidane, Ronaldinho, Thierry Henry, Ronaldo. It wouldn't be bad, that."I've already scored goals, given decisive passes, won back balls. It's really just about raising the level."

Despite racking up a host of honours as Juve have dominated Italian football, a humble Pogba says he is a way off reaching his best."I don't think I am a great; I think I've done nothing. I've done nothing in soccer," the 23-year-old added.

"I've won leagues, but I haven't won the Champions League, the World Cup, the Euros. Winning Euro 2016 in France, that wouldn't be bad."I want to work, to be a great, to win everything."
