Manchester United eye Ilkay Gundogan after missing out on Cesc Fabregas transfer

    173145087.jpg

Manchester United are ready to turn to Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan after missing out on Cesc Fabregas.

United boss David Moyes had made Fabregas his top target this summer, but after seeing three successive bids turned down, he is ready to look elsewhere.Everton powerhouse Maraoune Fellaini remains an option, but it’s now thought that Germany international Gundogan could move to Old Trafford instead.

The 22-year-old had two years left on his Dortmund contract, and despite talk over an extension in recent weeks, United are increasingly confident they could land him for around £20million.

Gundogan has been given a glowing reference by his former team-mate Shinji Kagawa, who is now a key part of Moyes’ plans at United.

It’s thought that the pair could be reunited before the end of the window, even if Dortmund decide to dig their heels in and try and force him to stay.Gundogan represents everything that Moyes has been looking for, with an excellent passing range and ability to control a midfield battle.

The player has previously admitted his interest in the Premier League, where he has been linked with Arsenal and Chelsea.Barcelona were also keen on him earlier this month, but their interest has since cooled.

Arsenal to continue scouting Bernard as Arsene Wenger considers £21million bid

    1000x73023.jpg

Arsenal are set to step up their scouting of Atletico Mineiro star Bernard as Arsene Wenger mulls over a bid for the player. The Gunners are known to be long-term admirers of 20-year-old Bernard, who will play for Mineiro in the second leg of the Copa Libertadores final on Thursday.

It’s widely expected that the match will be his last for the club, and Wenger has dispatched one of his most trusted scouts to the game to keep an eye on his progress.

Wenger has instructed a full report from Everton Gushiken, who has been working in South America for Arsenal for years, and has increasingly been seen as the club’s number one man in the region.

Gushiken will be charged with presenting a full low down on Bernard, amid growing interest from the likes of Borussia Dortmund, Porto, Benfica and Tottenham. It’s thought that Mineiro are ready to part with the player for around £20million, while Bernard has been coy amid links to the Premier League in recent days.

The 5’5 play-maker has made 59 appearances for Mineiro since breaking into the first-team squad, scoring 11 goals.

Gonzalo Higuain and Jose Reina pass medicals at Napoli

    reina_2947731.jpg

Gonzalo Higuain and Jose Reina have passed medicals at Napoli and will be presented to the ambitious Serie A club's fans on Monday night, according to president Aurelio De Laurentiis.Real Madrid striker Higuain, 25, is on the verge of signing a reported five-year contract at the Stadio San Paolo for a 40million euro (£34.5million) fee while Liverpool goalkeeper Reina, 30, prepares to reunite with his former Reds manager Rafael Benitez on a season-long loan deal.

The duo were pictured heading for medicals at Rome's Villa Stuart sport clinic and Azzurri president De Laurentiis has now taken to Twitter to confirm a successful outcome for both players.Through his official account, he wrote: "Higuain and Reina have passed their medicals and will soon join the rest of the group."On Monday there will be a big party at the San Paolo. You will be able to get to know the new players and the new shirts."

Should the moves go through, Higuain and Reina could appear for Napoli against Arsenal in next month's Emirates Cup.The pre-season event is being hosted by the Gunners, who have been strongly linked with a move for the Argentinian striker this summer, on the weekend of August 3-4. Porto and Galatasaray will also contest the mini-tournament.

A report published on Gazzetta.it showed Higuain, who has scored 107 league goals in six seasons with Real, wearing a Napoli scarf while being mobbed at Rome's Fiumicino airport.

Meanwhile, Reina's agent Manuel Garcia Quilon told Gazzetta.it: "He's happy to reunite with Benitez because he's known him for over five years from their time in Spain and England, and they worked very well together."Higuain declared his intention to leave the Santiago Bernabeu towards the end of the 2012-13 season, while Spain international Reina's chances of first-team football at Anfield appeared increasingly limited following the arrival of Simon Mignolet from Sunderland.

Napoli have already signed winger Dries Mertens from PSV Eindhoven and both forward Jose Callejon and defender Raul Albiol from the Spanish capital club as the Serie A runners-up rebuild for a title challenge by reinvesting the reported 64million euros (£55million) earned from striker Edinson Cavani's transfer to Paris St Germain.

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho thinks pressure is on big spending Manchester City

    JoseMourinho_2975080.jpg

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has suggested that the pressure is all on Manchester City after their summer spending spree.New City boss Manuel Pellegrini has splurged the cash on Spanish duo Alvaro Negredo and Jesus Navas from Sevilla as well as Stevan Jovetic from Fiorentina and Fernandinho from Shakhtar Donetsk - spending more than £80million in the process.

And Mourinho believes that investment on experienced players means people should expect more from City than his young Chelsea side."I know the players City have bought and they're players without surprises - they're more than ready," said Mourinho, quoted in the Daily Mirror.

"If you see their ages, their maturity, they're in the perfect time of their career to go to England."They are players at the top of their careers who don't need to adapt - experienced but still young, so I think they have bought very, very well."So of course people should be expecting more of them, with their experience, than my young team."Mourinho added: "Young players need to learn, they need time to get to the top.

"But Navas and Negredo are to world champions, two European champions, Jovetic has been one of the best in Serie A for more than two years and Fernandinho has lots of experience.

"They bought very well. That doesn't surprise me, because they have the money to buy but also the knowledge. They have people in the club who know a lot about football."In my first spell you, the press, were always putting pressure on me saying, 'You buy this, you spend that, you buy the title'. So I hope now it's on the other side."

    Best

Chelsea have signed young players such as Marco van Ginkel and Andre Schurrle, leading Mourinho to conclude that celebrating the Premier League title come the spring would be his best trophy win ever.He added: "When people ask what it will mean if we win the title, I say there are no ifs - either we win or we don't.

"It would be different. I t can be better because I always say that the best trophy you have is the most recent one."If we win this season, with this group, it will be the best for many reasons."

Pellegrini: I’ve got the best strikers in the Premier League

    pell_1771054a.jpg

MANUEL PELLEGRINI claims Manchester City have the best strike force in the country after a £40million splurge on new forwards last week.Alvaro Negredo and Stevan Jovetic joined Sergio Aguero and Edin Dzeko at the Etihad. And new boss Pellegrini, who played Dzeko and Negredo together against South China yesterday, reckons his awesome foursome are the envy of the rest of the Premier League. He said: “Yes, I think so, it’s very strong. I know Negredo very well from the Spanish league, so it was not a surprise for me the way he played.

“I think we have very good strikers with Dzeko as well. They can play together or we can play one of them with Jovetic or Aguero.“We have four very good strikers and that’s what you need if you play in the Premier League and Champions League as a competitive team.

“We are not just preparing a team, it’s important to prepare the whole squad and then we will see who plays.“We must be ready from the start of the first match against Newcastle and the team must play as we want.“I’m sure we will arrive at the first match the way I want.”Dzeko got the only goal against South China in the Barclays Premier League Asia trophy yesterday to give Pellegrini his first win as City boss.

The Bosnian striker headed home a 21st-minute James Milner cross to book a final date against Sunderland here on Saturday evening. The Black Cats had earlier beaten Spurs 3-1.But although Dzeko got the goal it was Negredo — who joined from Seville for an initial £16.4m — who caught the eye with a 25-minute cameo in the second half.City’s £30m Brazilian midfielder Fernandinho also got a run-out, alongside Yaya Toure.Pellegrini’s team looked comfortable in the opening exchanges, with Dzeko firing into the side-netting and Toure then having a header saved.City duly took the lead when Milner neatly evaded a challenge on the right and delivered a ball which Dzeko headed into the ground and past the goalkeeper from close range.

After the break, Spanish international hitman Negredo came on for Toure and soon sent an acrobatic effort over the bar.Negredo then teed up his fellow frontman Dzeko, with the Bosnian being denied by a smart save. And the lively Milner launched an audacious long-range attempt that went off target.Jovetic, a £22.4m buy from Fiorentina, and another new boy Jesus Navas were left on the bench as they only joined up with the squad on Monday.

Chilean Pellegrini said: “We’ll see in the next few days with David Silva, Aguero and Jovetic as well.“There were four important players who didn’t play today. Maybe two or three could play on Saturday. “I think that a big club like Manchester City always has a lot of pressure. “It’s very important to play under pressure. The players play better under pressure so we’re not scared by that.”Match-winner Dzeko hopes to do enough to give Pellegrini a selection headache with his forwards.

And he believes he can play alongside another target man like Negredo if needed.Dzeko said: “Why not — but it’s not my decision, it’s the manager’s decision. We now have four top strikers and all of us want to play.”
