'Iron Lady' Katinka Hosszu wins 200 IM for third Olympic gold

    capture517.jpg

RIO DE JANEIRO – The Iron Lady was golden again Tuesday night, and now only one race stands between Katinka Hosszu and an Olympic record.

Hosszu, the Hungarian swimmer nicknamed for her ability to swim a staggering number of events without tiring, won her third gold medal of the Rio Games, overwhelming the field in the 200-meter individual medley to set an Olympic record at the Olympic Aquatics Stadium.

American Maya DiRado, who finished second to Hosszu in the 400-meter IM, came away with a bronze medal.

Like American star Katie Ledecky, Hosszu came into the Games hoping to break the female record of four Olympic golds in a single Games, held by American swimmers Missy Franklin and Amy Van Dyken. While Ledecky settled for silver in a relay race, Hosszu dropped the 200-meter butterfly Tuesday, focusing instead on her specialty, the IM.

Hosszu’s grip on the race was tenuous coming in, as Brit Siobhan-Marie O’Connor posted the fastest qualifying time, but the Iron Lady held her off down the stretch with a finish of 2:06:58, three-tenths of a second ahead of O’Connor. DiRado finished third with a time of

Serena's five-gold dream ends in Rio

    capture518.jpg

Rio de Janeiro (AFP) - Serena Williams' hopes of a fifth Olympic gold medal were crushed by Ukraine's Elina Svitolina on Tuesday as the battle for the women's title in Rio was blown wide open.

Top seed and defending champion Williams was clearly struggling with a right shoulder injury as she was stunned 6-4, 6-3 by Svitolina, 13 years her junior.

"The better player won," said Williams, who served up eight double faults, including five in one game in the second set.

She also hit 37 unforced errors.

"It was a great opportunity. It didn't work out the way I wanted it to, but at least I was able to make it to Rio. That was one of my goals."

Defeat for the 34-year-old means that the Rio tournament has lost both its number one players before the quarter-finals after Novak Djokovic went out in the first round.

Only three of the top 10 seeds have made it to the last-eight of the women's draw.

The Rio Games -- and possibly her Olympic career -- are now over for Serena after she and sister Venus were deposed as doubles champions in the first round.

    - Olympic pool turns green:shocked:

Confusion abounded at the Maria Lenk Aquatics Centre as the normally azure pool water turned a swampy green for the women's synchronised 10m platform final.

Divers were forced to compete in water the colour sea lions - rather than Olympians - are accustomed to performing in.

Questions were asked on social media. Had Shrek taken an overnight dip? Was it because Roald Dahl's BFG had been drinking frobscottle?

On Monday, Tom Daley and Daniel Goodfellow had won bronze in then picture-perfect conditions and even Daley did not know what had happened to the clear water he had dived into just 24 hours earlier. "Erm, what happened?" tweeted the Briton.

The Rio Olympics’ official Twitter account says the water has been tested and poses no risk for athletes. A further investigation is underway.

But that won’t stop the internet from taking some guesses as to what could cause the discoloration. Here are a few.
    It’s algae

The Olympic diving pool is kept warmer than the one with the lap lanes. That means it’s a bit more of a friendly environment for microbes to grow in, as Sports Illustrated points out. But then, there ought to be enough chlorine in that pool to kill the algae. Ought to.
    It’s oxidized copper

Think of the Statue of Liberty’s patina: When its copper was exposed to water, it began to oxidize (i.e., rust). Unlike iron, which turns brown when it oxidizes, copper turns green. But then how would copper get into the pool to oxidize? Is a pipe corroding?

Gizmodo cites a section of a handbook on pool chemistry that reads:

Copper can enter the pool water from corrosion or galvanic activity in copper heaters, from Chapter 2: Chemical Factors – Stain Producing Minerals 18 Notes: copper-based algaecides and from the source water. Copper problems are often indicated by pool water with a true clear green color, whereas green water caused by algae would be green and cloudy.

    It’s urine

It’s very likely not urine. That would be a lot of urine — too much to turn a pool green that’s more than 15 feet deep. (It would have to be the really, really yellow variety of urine, right?)

As Vox’s Libby Nelson explained, it was the water quality in Rio’s outdoor venues that had people worried before the games began:

The pollution in Rio’s waterways is serious: The locations for the rowing and sailing races are ridden with viruses that could sicken athletes if they inadvertently end up swallowing water, according to an investigation from the Associated Press. Five times in the past 13 months, Copacabana Beach, where the marathon swimming and triathlon will take place, had so much rotavirus in the water that if it were located in California, it would have had to post water quality warnings.

No one thought the swimming and diving pools would pose a problem. And perhaps it’s not a big deal, considering the officials say it’s safe. But the bigger question is: Will athletes want to compete in it?
