Sri Lanka’s Cabinet writes off Hyatt Regency in Hambantota

Aug 18, 2016 (LBO) – Sri Lanka’s Cabinet has approved shifting four billion rupees allocated for the Hyatt Regency project in Hambantota to the Grand Hyatt project in Colombo, effectively completing the write off of the Hambantota project.

“Although, 315 million rupees has been spent, constructions of the said hotel has not been commenced,” a statement on approved cabinet decisions said.

“Accordingly, the proposal made by Hon. Kabir Hashim, Minister of Public Enterprise Development, to use the funds allocated for Hyatt Regency in completion of the Grand Hyatt Colombo Hotel, was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers.”

The new government cancelled the Hyatt Regency project in Hambantota last year.

A sum of 18.5 billion rupees was invested by Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation, Employees Provident Fund and Litro Gas Lanka Ltd in the equity of Canwill Holdings (Pvt) Ltd for the purpose of construction of Grand Hyatt Colombo Hotel through its fully owned subsidiary Sinolanka Hotels and Spa Pvt Ltd.

The constructions commenced in 2012, with approvals given by the former government. During its construction it was decided to invest 4 billion rupees in building another hotel called Hyatt Regency in Hambantota.

With 315 rupees million already spent, Minister Hashim wants the funds allocated for the Grand Hyatt Colombo Hotel, effectively completing the write off of the Hambantota project.

“It has also been decided to investigate on investing money of public enterprises in commercial ventures which are out of their basic objectives,” the statement added.

Colombo Port City to resume operations in October

The Colombo Port City will recommence operations in October this year, the project contractor China Harbour Engineering Company’s Chief Sales & Marketing Officer Liang Thow Ming said yesterday.

Renamed the Colombo International Financial City (CIFC), the project will have a total reclamation and infrastructure cost of approximately $ 15 billion, of which $ 1.4 billion will be for the base of the structure. This would include roads, parks, beaches as well as sewage, electrical and water systems.

Recommencement of the project will bring to life the massive 269 hectare reclamation works adjacent to the Business District of Colombo.

Liang said “the vision for the city is to generate 83,000 job opportunities, most of which will be high value jobs. We cannot at the moment quantify the number of indirect job opportunities the project will create but this is a project that requires a lot of extra manpower.”

CHEC, which is the contractor for the Financial City would be initially hiring about 5,000 people, the number they were to hire before the project was halted.

“What we are planning to build is a clean, modern city of international standards that will be very livable and sustainable,” Liang added.

Sri Lanka wants to build 3,000MW of solar power in 10 years

ECONOMYNEXT - Sri Lanka is planning to boost renewable energy to 70 percent of total by 2030 from the current 50 percent, building 3000 MW of solar power capacity in the country, Information Minister Gayantha Karunathilake said.

The cabinet has approved a proposal to given incentives to smaller power users as part of the plan.

Total renewable power which is already high at 50 percent, will be boosted to 60 percent by 2020, 70 percent by 2030, under a proposal to cabinet by the power minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya Minister Karunathilake said.

By 2050 all energy will be made through renewable or 'indigenous' sources.

Sri Lanka will also build 600MW of wind power over the next 10 years.

The private sector has a special interest in generating solar power, the cabinet had been told.

Sri Lanka has a powerful and articulate renewable energy lobby which is pushing expensive and unreliable power which is exposed to the vagaries of weather uncertainties into the electricity system to extract profits, and forcing the utility to build stand by thermal power to compensate, critics have said.

Sri Lanka has a history of scuttling the cheapest generating plants identified and planned by the Ceylon Electricity Board and substituting high cost plants in their place.

A large of the renewable energy capacity however comes from large hydros, which are the cheapest and were built by the CEB itself with no outside lobbying. (Colombo/Aug18/2016)

The MoU demonstrates the Sri Lankan government’s commitment to furthering its cooperation with Huawei. In addition, the prime minister also visited Huawei’s new ICT industry exhibition hall and had a friendly meeting with Mr. Li Jinge, senior vice president, Huawei.

Tourist arrivals hit all-time high in July

    Untitled-565.jpg

An elated Chinese tourist leaps in to the air for a picture by another tourist at Independence Square. There were 250,274 tourists from China in the first seven months of this year - Pic by Shehan Gunasekera

Tourist arrivals to Sri Lanka hit an all-time high in July this year. The number of arrivals, which clocked 209,351, represented a growth of 19.1% compared to July last year and is the highest number recorded in a single month since records began in the sixties.

What is significant is that the July arrivals figure is higher than even the figure recorded last December, which is traditionally Sri Lanka’s highest grossing month in the tourism calendar. Last December too was a record at the time with 206,114 arrivals but the July performance has eclipsed this mark.

Minister of Tourism Development, Lands and Christian Religious Affairs John Amaratunga is elated with the latest data. “We are very happy that our efforts are paying off. Though many say that there is no visible campaign, the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Board has been quietly getting about its task and delivering the numbers,” he said.

Amaratunga said that a worldwide destination promotion campaign on a multi-media platform would be launched towards November this year. “This campaign will essentially target the high season traffic and will use digital platforms in a big way.”

According to data released by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) for the period January to July 2016, Western Europe has been the biggest contributor in terms of numbers generating 380,725 visitors. This region generated 321,472 visitors over the same period last year.

The second highest generating region was South Asia which is dominated by India with 283,689 visitors while the third highest generating region was East Asia dominated by China which produced 250,274 visitors during the period January to July 2016. Both of these markets have seen significant growth compared to the same period last year.

In terms of growth, according to country-specific data China with 163,473 visitors continues to show the highest growth in arrivals at 36.6% for the period January to July 2016. The second highest growth in arrivals has been from Australia with 38,657 visitors showing a growth rate of 19.8% followed by the UK with 110,649 visitors at 18.7%.

“We are happy to see growth all round especially in emerging markets like Australia which is very encouraging. We are on course to another record breaking year,” noted Amaratunga.

Total doing EIA for Sri Lanka oil search

    Aug 19, 2016 15:14 PM GMT+0530

ECONOMYNEXT – French oil major Total SA has begun the Environmental Impact Assessment in preparation for surveys for oil and gas deposits off Sri Lanka’s east coast, an official said.

“Total has just finalised their survey plan, selection of their seismic contractor and they are now in the process of doing the EIA,” Saliya Wickramasuriya, Director General of the Petroleum Resources Development Secretariat (PRDS), told EconomyNext.com.

“Seismic surveys will start by November or December.”

The north-east monsoon conditions which are expected to begin around the same time will not impede the acquisition of seismic data, he said.

“For the seismic vessels involved and the way those streamers are deployed, our monsoon conditions are not an impediment.”

Total signed an agreement with the PRDS in February for exploration in the deep water JS5 and JS6 blocks off the east coast starting with a 2 D seismic survey.

The French oil major entered Sri Lanka after test wells drilled by Cairn India discovered gas deposits in two, proving the existence of petroleum systems in the Mannar Basin off the west coast.
