'Why not Jese?' Nicol sees Liverpool swooping for PSG forward

    jese-rodriguez-psg-14122016_dfvzwgfs960818uuk3n4d5rnx.jpg

Liverpool are among those to have been linked with a January approach for Paris Saint-Germain forward Jese, and Reds legend Steve Nicol believes a move would make sense. The Spanish striker has struggled to make the desired impact at the Ligue 1 champions since completing a summer switch from Real Madrid.

A winter exit from Parc des Princes is now being mooted, with PSG boss Unai Emery conceding that all options will be explored for the 23-year-old frontman.

Serie A outfit Roma are reported to be leading the chase for Jese, but Liverpool remain in the hunt.

Jurgen Klopp is looking to bolster his attacking ranks during the current window, with Sadio Mane away on Africa Cup of Nations duty with Senegal.Nicol feels Jese is capable of providing quality cover and would not be surprised to see a formal bid lodged in the coming weeks.

He told the Liverpool Echo: "I think this is possible."The fact that PSG have gone and signed Julian Draxler means that there's even less of a chance of Jese starting."Klopp has already said that he is interested in added some more attacking wide players, so why not Jese?

"I think this has got a chance, obviously it depends on the money but I think this deal [could happen]."Jese has made 14 appearances for PSG this season, but has managed just two goals.

He signed a five-year contract upon his arrival in the French capital, but could now see that deal cut short after just five months.

Lewandowski turned down record-breaking China move, claims agent

    wnxo1sk8gob71w1gcad5hpfp5.jpg

Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski turned down a record-breaking move to China, according to his agent.

Cezary Kucharski claims the Polish striker could have earned in excess of €40 million (£34m) a year by moving to the Chinese Super League - making him the world's highest-paid player ahead of Carlos Tevez, who recently joined Shanghai Shenhua.

But Lewandowski instead signed a new deal with Bayern in December that has tied him to the German club until 2021."I was contacted by an agent who brings stars to China," Kucharski told SportoweFakty. "The club name wasn't mentioned.

"If Lewy had decided to move to China, his salary would have been significantly higher than €40m, which means more than Carlos Tevez earns."

When asked why the forward did not pursue the move, Kucharski replied: "It's obvious: Lewy is not only younger but also a better player than Tevez."

SportoweFakty reports that the unnamed club were willing to pay a transfer fee of €200m (£172m), which would have demolished the €105m world-record figure that Manchester United paid for Paul Pogba.

Despite the striker seemingly committing the rest of his prime years to Bayern, however, his agent did not completely rule out the possibility of Lewandowski seeking a new challenge in the future."Robert is not for sale right now," Kucharski added, "but I never say never. Life offers several solutions."

Lewandowski, who has won four Bundesliga titles and been the division's top goalscorer twice, has netted 12 times in 16 league games so far this season to help Bayern into first place.

Mourinho confirms January deal for Lindelof is off

    victor-lindelof-benfica_uwj4bcin09vs1h95pxntne6s9.jpg

Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Manchester United will not sign a central defender during the January transfer window.

The Red Devils have been heavily linked with a move for Benfica centre-back Victor Lindelof but the form of Mourinho's current group of defenders has persuaded him to wait.

United will be without Eric Bailly for the duration of the Ivory Coast's participation in the Africa Cup of Nations, but Mourinho plans to rotate between Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Marcos Rojo.Asked if he would be signing a new defender this month, Mourinho replied: "No, I wait for Bailly. I hope the three can control the situation in those eight matches.

"I will try to rest one in every game. On Saturday I will rest one, against Hull another - and we’ll try to make a rotation between these three."We still have Daley Blind as the fourth defender in case we need him to play there and we also have Michael Carrick, so let’s try."

Mourinho also confirmed that Morgan Schneiderlin and Memphis Depay will not be considered for selection until their respective futures are resolved. The Portuguese revealed the midfield duo looked certain to leave the club in December but now have no imminent moves on the table.

"I will allow them to leave if the right offer comes," Mourinho explained. "Until this moment? No."Is this a good situation? No. Why not? Because I don’t think about them as options in this moment.

"In normal conditions they would probably be selected for the match tomorrow and they aren’t because we're waiting for something that a couple of weeks ago looked like 100 per cent and at the moment looks like zero per cent, because we don’t have any offer that is close to the quality for the players we have."

Valencia have bought f***ing s*** players, says ex-president

    enzo-perez-andres-iniesta-valencia-barcelona-22102016_fqcbo7osxh8n18j65wrfxx1wu.jpg

Former Valencia president Paco Roig has launched a stinging attack on the club's administration, accusing those in charge of squandering money on sub-standard players. The Spanish giants are currently battling against relegation to the second-tier, as they sit level on points with 18th-placed Sporting Gijon in the winter break.

Cesare Prandelli, meanwhile, became the third Che coach to be sacked or resign during 2016 alone when he threw in the towel in December, leaving the club mired in chaos. Roig focused his criticisms on Valencia sporting director Suso Garcia Pitarch, while he also had some choice words for Gary Neville's ill-fated spell on the bench.

"Mr Garcia Pitarch has to go because he has f***ed up this team. Garcia Pitarch only says stupid things and he has brought in some f***ing s*** players," the ex-president fired to Mundo Deportivo. "What has Garcia Pitarch done to be running Spain's third club? I am pissed off with so many lies. He says he is going but they won't let him... just go!"

The former chief also criticised owner Peter Lim, suggesting that the businessman had a limited knowledge of the game. "This gentleman, why does he have to take the team to Singapore? Does he know anything about football?" he said.

"Prandelli had to go running home. The other guy that came who was a radio commentator [in reference to Sky Sports pundit Neville], he was one of the worst I've seen as a coach. "The English guy, Gary Neville, he also had to go running home." And Roig rounded off his attack with some harsh thoughts on misfiring striker Rodrigo.

"Why would you sign a player for €30m who is s***? Rodrigo isn't worth €30m even if he was filled with wine," he joked. "Valencia are f*****, badly. This is a disaster. As much is it pains me, they look dead to me."

Celtic want more than £20m for Dembele

    moussadembele-cropped_1mhegto7ovgp01i1t0ul0cjkhh.jpg

Celtic assistant manager Chris Davies insists they have no intention of selling Moussa Dembele for £20 million amid reported interest from West Ham.

Dembele, 20, has quickly developed into a key figure for Celtic after joining the club on a free transfer from Fulham and his good performances have not gone unnoticed elsewhere.

West Ham are believed to be willing to pay £20m for the prolific attacker, but Davies has made it clear Celtic will not cash in on the attacker for such a fee. "That figure is definitely well below the valuation, that's for sure," the Celtic assistant said at a news conference.

"I think the manager [Brendan Rodgers] spoke pretty clearly on that situation previously. There has been no formal bid or anything like that so it is speculation.

"From us, we know this is the best place for Moussa to develop. He is still 20 years old and has development left in him.

"He has had a fantastic first six months, he has absolutely loved it and there is so much more to come from us as a team and from Moussa at Celtic. That is what we are concentrating on."When you are doing well, especially when you are a striker, there is going to be big money and talk thrown around a lot – especially in transfer windows.

"We cannot control that and we have just got to concentrate on trying to help him develop as a player and focus on the next game."

Ibrahimovic: 'I see myself as an animal'

    zlatan-ibrahimovic-chelsea-manchester-united_wgpqsbetog611pfscmn4kz43j.jpg

Manchester United frontman Zlatan Ibrahimovic claims that he sees himself 'as an animal' that does not need rest like normal footballers. The 35-year-old is the second highest scorer in the Premier League this season, with 13 goals in 19 appearances for the Red Devils.

Manager Jose Mourinho had been questioned whether he would rest the forward, but admitted that despite Ibrahimovic's age, he would not drop him from his starting XI.

Now the former Sweden international has echoed his manager's claims, stating that he does not have 'a normal body' and that his training regime at Old Trafford is helping him stay at peak fitness.

"I feel good, I feel in shape," Ibrahimovic told the club's official website."The boss has made a good programme for me since the start. He has been adapting my physical point of view and the way I can play every game. He has to get the credit for that."The mixture between training, recovery and the game, I do it differently, and he set it up for me. So that is why I can hold out for so long.

"And, when you have a body like me, it is not a normal body. It is like when you see an animal. It goes in and is fresh always so I see myself as an animal."

:yes:Mourinho: Man Utd not in heaven despite good run

    mourinho-cropped_ek614a5lx97s14arsrvy8jp5j.jpg

Jose Mourinho has stressed Manchester United always remained calm after their underwhelming start to the season and are not getting carried away by their good run of form.

The Old Trafford side initially struggled to get going under Mourinho, but they are currently on a 13-game unbeaten streak in all competitions, winning their last seven. However, United currently sit 10 points behind Premier League leaders Chelsea, but the manager insists they are not "in heaven" yet.

"When you have a run of two or three months winning, winning, winning at the beginning it is paradise," Mourinho told reporters."Everybody is friendly with everybody. Everybody hugs everybody and everybody kisses everybody.

"When you have bad results there is normally a tendency for that to be delayed and sometimes things even degenerate and there is no way back."But we were calm, we were not in hell and in this moment we are stable again and we are not in heaven."

And Mourinho insists he has felt no pressure from the board throughout their inconsistent start, stating he has been given time to get the team back to the top of English football.

"The board always told me 'you are here for three years, keep doing your job, no bad results will change our idea of having you here for a long time'."I think this relationship can last a long time because it was not based on good results, it was based on reality, what we saw day to day."

United will be looking to extend their hot streak when they take on Reading in the FA Cup on Saturday, before they take on Hull City on Tuesday and hosting Liverpool at Old Trafford a few days later.

Guardiola: Manchester City must believe they can beat any team

    pep-guardiola-cropped_57qdgsfkr6ff1mmz37tt6aub5.jpg

Pep Guardiola says Manchester City's players and fans must believe they can beat any team after they thrashed West Ham 5-0 on Friday.

City have struggled for consistency since the arrival of Guardiola, but they were in fine form at London Stadium as they booked their ticket for the fourth round of the FA Cup. Yaya Toure, David Silva, Sergio Aguero and John Stones all found the net in a simple win over Slaven Bilic's men, their fifth in six matches in all competition.

Guardiola has now overseen five wins in six games, but a 1-0 defeat at Liverpool in that time damaged title ambitions at the Etihad Stadium. And with the knockout rounds of the Champions League also looming, Guardiola wants a better big-game mentality from his players and fans.

"We were able to keep the ball better than the last games and we created more chances. Before the penalty, we had three or four chances and with the second and third goals it was easier for the second half," Guardiola told BBC Sport."It is important to win away, it is not easy. Hopefully it can help us to make our players believe that they are good enough to play every game.

"I would like to involve our fans and they can believe that we are good."I do not know what happened in the past but we are good guys, so all the season we run a lot, fight a lot, playing good, sometimes not playing good.

"But they have to believe they can compete everywhere against every team."Guardiola also denied reports that City have made a move for Bayern Munich's Holger Badstuber, stating that he is "still a Bayern Munich player".

Conte weighing up January exits for Chelsea duo

    kenedy-cropped_5w8c0wvy9umh1njpalomb1c63.jpg

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte says Charly Musonda and Kenedy could be sent out on loan again during the transfer window.

The players were recalled early from loan spells with Real Betis and Watford respectively after struggling for first-team football and have resumed training with the rest of Chelsea's first team.

However, with competition for places fierce at the Premier League leaders, Conte admits he could allow both to leave Stamford Bridge in January if the right approaches come in.

"For Musonda, for Kenedy, this month is important," Conte said. "They went on loan and it's important to wait this month [to see] what happens, to evaluate the situation in the right way and then make the solution for the club, for the players above all.

"We know now that if Musonda or Kenedy play one second with us, they can't go on loan."For this reason it's important to evaluate. Kenedy is training with us only two weeks, Charly only 10 days.

"It's important to evaluate these players and then make the best decision for the players, for the team, for the club and for me."

Valencia interested in Juventus star Evra – but he dreams of Man Utd move

    hp-patrice-evra-juventus_3v42fj73wak712s8gccxc4gwj.jpg

Valencia want to sign veteran Juventus left-back Patrice Evra as they attempt to battle against relegation from La Liga.

While the Frenchman wishes to quit the Turin side amid a lack of playing time, his ideal move would be back to Manchester United, though the reality is that he will likely head for Spain. Goal understands that he is poised to make a decision on his future imminently.

Aged 35, the left-back is not ready to quit the game and the Spanish outfit see him as possessing the experience to lift them out of their current funk.

Rumours had linked the France international with a move back to Old Trafford, however, with Rio Ferdinand’s Instagram post to his former team-mate setting alight speculation that he could move back to the Premier League. While this has not been entirely ruled out, it is a distant possibility.

Juventus are ready to look around for replacements, and if an opportunity to alter this area of their side arises they could be willing to take it. Mattia De Sciglio of AC Milan, whose career was launched by Juve boss Massimiliano Allegri, is a prime candidate, while Manchester United’s Matteo Darmian is also in their viewfinder, having previously turned out for Torino for four years.

Another option for the Serie A side is Sead Kolasinic, who is out of contract with Schalke in the summer and appears unwilling to sign a new deal so could be available on a cut-price deal this month.

Allegri, meanwhile, has been tight lipped on the future of Evra, indicating to the media: "I won't talk about transfers, because that is down to the club. As long as players are at Juventus, they have to be at the disposal of the coach.

"There is some instability created by transfer gossip, so the less we talk about it, the better. I am against the January window, as it creates distraction and can destabilise situations during an important month of games."

The Frenchman enjoyed the most successful spell of his career with United, where he won five Premier League titles, three League Cups, the Champions League in 2007-08 and the Club World Cup.

Evra played 379 games for the Red Devils between 2006 and 2014, scoring 10 goals and assisting 40 more. Since moving to Juventus two-and-a-half years ago, he has turned out on 82 occasions.

He started his professional career in Italy with Monza having come through the youth ranks at Paris Saint-Germain before moving to Ligue 1 side Nice and then to Monaco, who he helped to the Champions League final of 2004.

Real Madrid 5-0 Granada: Ronaldo & Benzema on target as Blancos romp home

    cristiano-ronaldo-real-madrid-granada-la-liga_1opkac6ag69x21ddhwls3st1wl.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo got on the scoresheet after being presented with his fourth Ballon d'Or at the Santiago Bernabeu, as Real Madrid ran out 5-0 winners over LaLiga strugglers Granada.Isco hit a first-half brace and the other goals came from familiar and unfamiliar sources respectively, as Karim Benzema and Casemiro got in on the act.

The victory means Madrid are now 39 games unbeaten, pulling level with Barcelona's all-time Spanish record – a streak they halted themselves with a 2-1 Clasico win at Camp Nou last April.

Zinedine Zidane's side sit six points clear of Barca at the top of LaLiga and will break new ground if they avoid defeat at Sevilla on Thursday, in a Copa del Rey tie where they hold a 3-0 aggregate advantage.

Madrid have only dropped eight points in the top flight all season – one fewer than second bottom Granada have managed in total and Lucas Alcaraz's men appear condemned to a grim battle for survival.

Ronaldo was honoured by a pre-match ceremony featuring former Ballon d'Or winners and ex-Madrid stars Raymond Kopa, Luis Figo, Michael Owen, Zidane and former Brazil striker Ronaldo, but it was the other members of the hosts' front three who combined for the 12th-minute opener.Granada coughed up possession needlessly in midfield and Benzema fed a pass for Isco to drill a finish underneath goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa.

Mexico international Ochoa was forced to pluck the ball from the net again eight minutes later as he could only parry Luka Modric's strike as far as Benzema, leaving the striker with a tap-in despite being in an offside position.

The goal the Bernabeu craved arrived thanks largely to Marcelo twisting and turning Granada right-back Tito to distraction. From the Brazilian's resulting cross, Ronaldo rose to head his 17th of the season.

Madrid's relentless pressure on Granada inside their own half forced a fourth, with Isco applying the finish to a low Modric cross in the 31st minute and a sprawling Ochoa tipped behind to deny the Spain playmaker his hat-trick before the interval.

A clearer opportunity fell Isco's way early in the second period but he headed into the turf and wide, while James Rodriguez's introduction at the interval in place of Toni Kroos lent extra verve to the Madrid midfield that Granada were ill-equipped to deal with.

Befuddled by the array of attacking talents before them, the visitors neglected to mark Casemiro at James' 58th-minute free-kick and the holding midfielder duly scrambled home at the back post.

The remaining action took on a testimonial feel, save for Granada left-back Franck Tabanou scything through Dani Carvajal and being fortunate to escape with a booking.

Ochoa parried to deny Ronaldo a late second and his team-mates must now clear their heads for a potentially unseemly scrap with basement boys Osasuna next time out, while Madrid will watch Barca's Sunday trip to Villarreal with interest.

Madrid pull level with Barcelona's record unbeaten mark

    realmadrid-cropped_1nqhyawftpsuq1t8blatholwfo.jpg

Real Madrid's 5-0 demolition of lowly Granada in La Liga on Saturday extended their club-record unbeaten run to 39 matches – bringing them level with Barcelona's all-time best mark for a Spanish club.

Zinedine Zidane's side last tasted defeat in April, when they lost 2-0 at Wolfsburg in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final – a deficit they would ultimately overturn on the way to becoming European champions.

They scored four first-half goals against Eibar at the Santiago Bernabeu in a 4-0 win three days on from that setback and repeated the feat as Granada were put to the sword.

Isco scored twice, with Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo also on target before the break, while Casemiro scored a rare goal in a more uneventful second period.
Barcelona's own record run came to an end against their bitter rivals with a 2-1 loss at Camp Nou last term – immediately before Madrid went down to Wolfsburg.

Madrid sit six points clear of Barca at the top of La Liga and will break the record if they avoid defeat at Sevilla in the Copa del Rey on Thursday. Zidane's men have a 3-0 advantage from the first leg of the last-16 tie.

:love:Man Utd 4-0 Reading: Rooney equals Charlton's record as Red Devils progress in FA Cup

    wayne-rooney-manchester-united-reading_11a40q63acwoe1d7kptg9j4sal.jpg

Wayne Rooney drew level with Bobby Charlton as Manchester United's record goalscorer as the holders beat Reading 4-0 in the FA Cup third round.

The club captain struck his 249th goal after only seven minutes at Old Trafford before he set up Anthony Martial to score the second, with Marcus Rashford netting a second-half double in a routine victory at Old Trafford.

Rooney's last goal came against Feyenoord in the Europa League in November but he marked his return from a thigh injury with a fortuitous finish to set a slick United on their way to victory.

Jose Mourinho made nine changes to the team that won 2-0 at West Ham on Sunday and two of those new faces, Martial and Rashford, gave the Reading defence a torrid time in a first half in which the hosts should have killed off the game.

Reading rallied after the break but there was to be no happy Old Trafford return for manager Jaap Stam as Rashford's cool finish and a howler from Ali Al Habsi helped United to an eighth win in a row in all competitions and kept their trophy defence alive. But the day largely belonged to Rooney, with England's record goalscorer now only one short of achieving the same feat for his club.

Rashford shot narrowly wide from the edge of the area and Al Habsi reacted well to keep out a Rooney effort within the first two minutes, as United set about seizing an early advantage.

With seven minutes played, they found their breakthrough as Rooney, at last, drew level with Charlton. Martial played the ball into the feet of Juan Mata inside the area, and his cross was prodded into the net from 12 yards by the captain.

United doubled their advantage after a quarter of an hour, as Martial latched onto Rooney's pass, strode into the penalty area and slotted beyond Al Habsi, who could have done more to keep out the shot.

Rashford fired into the side-netting after rounding Al Habsi and saw the 35-year-old parry another good effort as United threatened to run riot before half-time, although Liam Moore almost turned in Joey van den Berg's volley to give Reading a lifeline.

Michael Carrick had Al Habsi at full stretch shortly after the restart as United looked to press their advantage and kill the game quickly, although Reading began to produce a more spirited performance.

Rooney passed up a golden chance for a record-breaking second goal when he failed to lift the ball over Al Habsi from point-blank range after the goalkeeper had spilled Marouane Fellaini's effort, before Van den Berg done brilliantly to deny Rashford a tap-in.

Reading began to enjoy some sustained possession as United slackened their own pace, although a wayward hit from Danny Williams from 20 yards out rather summed up their attacking precision.

And that lack of cutting edge was exposed 15 minutes from time. Moore missed the ball as he tried to intercept Carrick's pass, allowing Rashford to race through into the penalty area before slotting beneath Al Habsi.

Substitute Bastian Schweinsteiger made his second appearance of the season to a rousing reception, but United fans saved a bigger cheer for the fourth and final goal.

Al Habsi dithered over a backpass before swiping at thin air as he attempted to clear the ball, allowing Rashford to blast the ball into the net from barely a yard out for his first double since the league win over Arsenal last February.

:):cool:A Man Utd great - Rooney deserves his place in Old Trafford history

    wayne-rooney-manchester-united-reading_11a40q63acwoe1d7kptg9j4sal.jpg

Sir Alex Ferguson didn’t really want to sign Wayne Rooney in 2004.

“It’s a strange twist of fate that if Newcastle hadn’t come in for him he wouldn’t be here, he’d probably still be at Everton,” explained the legendary manager. “Once we knew Everton were talking to another club we had to do something. We didn’t think he was available.”

Manchester United scouts had actually been keeping an eye on Rooney for four years, but it was Ferguson’s intention to continue monitoring the young England international for the time being. Rooney’s fantastic form led to Sir Bobby Robson’s attempt to take the 18-year-old to Tyneside which ultimately forced Sir Alex’s hand.

The £27 million fee spoke of United’s belief that Rooney would go on to become a central feature of the club for years to come, and a magical hat-trick on his debut in the 6-2 Champions League mauling of Fenerbahce gave supporters a glimpse of what the future would hold with the young Rooney at Old Trafford.

He was already used to making big impacts in his fledgling career thanks to his spectacular late winner past Arsenal’s David Seaman when only 16 and his statement spell at Euro 2004 with his national side, but he learned in time that he couldn’t write his only fairy tale every time. His scoring knack began to come to the fore in the red shirt thanks to the greater opportunities afforded him, while his destructive force and lightning pace continued to win him worldwide praise but he also underwent a steep learning curve in his first couple of years at Old Trafford.

From the sending-off against Villarreal for sarcastically clapping referee Kim Milton Nielsen to the season-ending foot injury which saw him miss the start of the World Cup, Rooney started to find hurdles to greatness strewn in his way. In his first two years in Manchester the previously incomparable Red Devils won only a League Cup as the Jose Mourinho effect took hold at Chelsea, and in the summer of 2006 he lived up to his fiery reputation by earning a game-changing red card in England’s exit from the World Cup.

His response was magnificent, quickly forgetting team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo’s role in his dismissal against Portugal to take his partnership with the star No.7 to the next level as United became their old dominant selves again between 2006 and 2009. With Rooney and Ronaldo to the fore, the Red Devils won three successive Premier League titles and claimed a third Champions League success in 2008. During that gold-plated spell the England striker netted 61 goals, a tally which would have stood out in most sides but was dwarfed by his headline-grabbing partner in crime.

Far from upsetting Rooney’s productivity levels, Ronaldo’s departure to Real Madrid actually paved the way for the front man to take his goal-scoring heroics to another level. In 2009-10, the first season post-CR7, Wayne scored a career-high 34 goals including memorable doubles home and away against AC Milan in the Champions League and the winner in the League Cup final win over Aston Villa.

The revelation the following season that Rooney would not sign a new contract with United attracted the ire of Ferguson, but the manager insisted he would not let the striker leave without a fight. “We are bemused… But I feel that we still have to keep the door open for him simply because he’s such a good player,” said the manager. Within days Rooney had signed a new five-year deal, explaining: “I am sure the fans over the last week have felt let down by what they have read and seen, but my position was from concern over the future.”

It remained one of the talking points of the season until he delivered a memorable overhead-kick goal in the home derby against Manchester City from Nani’s deflected cross. United’s 19th title followed, and Rooney went down in history as one of the men to help Ferguson knock Liverpool off their perch as the most successful side in English league history. For the second time in three attempts, though, they fell short of a fourth Champions League crown thanks to the brilliance of Barcelona despite Rooney netting a goal in the Wembley final.

He returned to his prolific ways the following campaign with another 34-goal season, including a career-best 27 in the Premier League. It was notable, though, that Rooney’s two greatest terms in front of goal had coincided with a pair of final-day title let-downs for United. When Robin van Persie was brought in to take some of the responsibility in front of goal away from Rooney, title number 20 followed with ease but again Rooney seemed unsettled as Sir Alex departed Old Trafford with the news his No.10 had again asked for a move.

“I went in to see him and just said ‘If you’re not going to play me then it might be better for me to move on’,” Rooney later explained. “Then, all of a sudden, it was all over the press that I had put a transfer request in which I never did.” Whatever the truth, he eventually signed a new five-and-a-half year contract during a time when United faced their greatest struggle in 25 years under David Moyes.

Under both Moyes and Louis van Gaal, who named him club captain, Rooney flickered rather than shone as changes in his body and in United’s circumstances demanded a new approach from the player. Mourinho arrived at Old Trafford last summer insisting he wanted a return of the destroyer in the forward line that his skipper was a number of years ago.

In truth he will never reach that level again, partly because few will. As a youngster he was simply a phenom. He was years ahead of the rest, and he appeared to peak between the ages of 24 and 26 rather than in his later-twenties like many others. The searing pace and endless belief are no longer there, and neither is that glint in his eye but one thing he will always have is that knack for goals.

On Saturday against Reading he equalled Sir Bobby Charlton’s United goals record, writing his name into the fabric of one of the world’s greatest sporting institutions. The achievement cannot be underestimated. It is perhaps a by-product of this type of milestone that it is rarely recorded at the height of the player’s powers.

As such we should judge Rooney’s 249 goals in light of his glorious achievements since 2004 rather than his less-convincing form of recent seasons. And in remembering why he was labelled England’s greatest talent since Paul Gascoigne, why Sir Alex Ferguson couldn’t risk another club signing him, and why he was so talked-about as a teenager, it perhaps comes as no surprise that he has matched the feats of a player as majestic as Charlton. Rooney deserves his place in Manchester United history.

Mourinho's Man Utd on longest win streak in seven years

    manchester-united-reading_1gdwyywkzek6w1ojkoqzgk7ofq.jpg

The days when Manchester United couldn't string even two wins together earlier this season seem a distant memory as Jose Mourinho's men romped to their eighth successive victory in all competitions.

The Red Devils have won every single match since being held to a 1-1 draw at Everton on December 4, including Saturday's 4-0 thrashing of Reading in the FA Cup.

Prior to that, Mourinho's team had gone over two months since winning back-to-back matches, and no United fan needs reminding of their patchy record of winning games consistently since Sir Alex Ferguson stepped down in 2013.

Their current eight-game win streak is actually the longest they've had since September 2009, a season in which they ultimately finished second behind Chelsea in the Premier League.

Next up for United is a League Cup semi-final first leg against Hull City on home soil before visiting Liverpool next weekend for a return to Premier League action.

:yes:Record-equalling Rooney's best day is still to come - Mourinho

Wayne Rooney's best day at Manchester United will not come until he becomes the club's all-time leading goalscorer, manager Jose Mourinho has said.

The 31-year-old opened the scoring in Saturday's 4-0 FA Cup win over Reading to move level with Sir Bobby Charlton on 249 goals for the 20-time English champions.

Rooney said he felt "hugely honoured" to equal Charlton's tally while the former midfielder watched on from the stands at Old Trafford, though he stressed he is eager to claim the outright record in one of United's two home games against Hull City and Liverpool next week.

And Mourinho is looking forward to what he thinks will be the pinnacle of Rooney's 12-and-a-half-year career at the club."I think the best day will arrive," he told a media conference. "This is not the best day for him. It will arrive, it's just a question of when.

"It's amazing because everyone knows what Sir Bobby is, and for Wayne to score the same number of goals is amazing."The best day is the day he scores the next goal. The next goal makes him the best scorer in the history of Manchester United."

Anthony Martial and a double from Marcus Rashford secured an eighth win in a row for United to move them into the fourth round at the expense of Jaap Stam's side.

Rashford spurned three good chances in the first half before scoring twice in quick succession in the closing stages and Mourinho revealed that he told him to put those misses behind him at the break.

"I spoke to him at half-time and I told him to forget the chances because his movement was very good," he said. "He is very fast and we know how to change from Marcus with Zlatan [Ibrahimovic], they are different players.

"[Martial] played very well against Middlesbrough, but he and myself felt 48 hours later against West Ham that it was better not to start. Playing against a good right back in [Chris] Gunter he did well."Stam believes his side can learn a lot from their defeat during what proved to be an unhappy return to Old Trafford.

"It is certainly a lesson for my team," he told BT Sport. "You have got to start aggressively against a team like this, otherwise they will make you pay.

"We started better in the second half, possession-wise, but we do not create many chances. But credit to the opposition, they have a lot of quality, skill and speed up front. You learn something from the movement of their players."It could have been a little bit of stage fright. But we are all humans, we all have feelings, you cannot programme them like computers."
