Real Madrid become first team to win back-to-back Champions League finals

    cristiano-ronaldo-juventus-real-madrid_6c82w8bz6m1w14atmmugvwosf.jpg

Real Madrid made history Saturday as they became the first team to win back-to-back European Cups since the Champions League era began in 1992-93.

Zinedine Zidane's side proved too powerful for Juventus, with Cristiano Ronaldo scoring twice and Casemiro adding another as they dispatched the Italian champions 4-1.

Mario Mandzukic might have scored the goal of the match to draw Juve level before the break, but they were largely second best throughout at the Millennium Stadium and finished with 10 men as Juan Cuadrado was dismissed in the closing stages for clashing with Sergio Ramos. As the match moved into stoppage time, Sergio Asensio added a fourth to the Spaniards' tally.

Los Blancos were given a rougher ride last season, when they edged Atletico Madrid on penalties to claim their 11th European Cup title, and they have had to wait only a year to secure their 12th. The Bernabeu side have, therefore, added to what was already a record number of victories in the competition.

The last time any team won successive European Cups was Arrigo Sacchi's AC Milan, who won the competition in 1989 and 1990.

Juventus 1 Real Madrid 4: Ronaldo double seals historic Champions League triumph

    ronaldo-cropped_18eohi7i6ojbe1axtms0hze1fl.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice as Real Madrid defeated 10-man Juventus 4-1 in Cardiff to retain their Champions League crown.

Madrid became the first team in the Champions League era to successfully defend the trophy with their sixth triumph in the competition - and 12th when you include it in its former guise of the European Cup - three of those victories coming in the last four years.

A thrilling first half saw Ronaldo put Madrid ahead, becoming the first player to score in three different Champions League finals in the process.Mario Mandzukic equalised for Juventus with a spectacular overhead kick that will live long in the memory.

But Madrid dominated the second half as Juve collapsed, Casemiro scoring with the help of a huge deflection before Ronaldo made sure of the victory from close-range, ensuring he finishes above Lionel Messi as the competition's top scorer this season.

Any hopes of a Juventus comeback were ended when substitute Juan Cuadrado was sent off 18 minutes after coming on, the winger receiving a second yellow card for a clash with Sergio Ramos, before Madrid substitute Marco Asensio put the icing on the cake in the last minute.

Having also secured LaLiga glory, the win seals a famous double for Zinedine Zidane in his first full season at the helm, with Madrid the first side since AC Milan in 1990 to win back-to-back European crowns.

Juventus, who had been seeking a treble after winning Serie A and the Coppa Italia, have now lost five straight finals since last tasting continental success back in 1996, including two of the last three, having also lost to Barcelona in Berlin two years ago.

Former Madrid star Gonzalo Higuain tested Keylor Navas early on with a 25-yard drive, before the goalkeeper had to make a terrific one-handed save to keep out a powerful Miralem Pjanic strike from a similar distance. It was Madrid, though, who opened the scoring after 20 minutes, Ronaldo capping a slick passing move.

Karim Benzema and Ronaldo were both involved in the build-up before Dani Carvajal's cut-back led to the Portugal international producing an impressive first-time finish, finding the far corner from the edge of the area with the help of a slight deflection off Leonardo Bonucci.

The lead lasted just seven minutes before Juve hit back in magnificent fashion.
Bonucci's pass from defence was helped on by both Alex Sandro and Higuain – the ball not leaving the ground throughout – to set up Mandzukic and the Croatia international took one touch and unleashed a magnificent overhead kick into the top corner, with Navas not close to it.

Ronaldo had a chance to hit back, but he misjudged an attempted diving header from Isco's cross as an entertaining first half ended level.Luka Modric tested Gianluigi Buffon with a left-footed strike from outside the box as Madrid made a faster start to the second half.

And Zidane's men retook the lead just after the hour mark when Toni Kroos had a shot blocked and Casemiro latched on to the loose ball 35 yards out, firing in a shot which took a huge deflection off Sami Khedira to deceive Buffon.

With Juve shell-shocked, Madrid struck again just three minutes later. Modric played a one-two with Carvajal, latching on to the full-back's return pass down the right and digging out a superb cross, allowing Ronaldo to nip ahead of a stationary Bonucci and prod in from inside the six-yard box.

Juve brought on Cuadrado, Mario Lemina and Claudio Marchisio as they attempted to reverse the momentum, while Gareth Bale was introduced for Madrid in his home city.

The Italian champions needed a superb intervention from Bonucci to stop Bale from tapping in a Ronaldo cross, before coming close themselves when Alex Sandro's glancing header fell just wide from Dani Alves' free-kick.

A miserable night for Juve got worse with six minutes to go when Cuadrado, already booked for a late challenge on Ronaldo, saw red after Ramos went down dramatically, the Colombia international having lightly pushed him and made minimal contact with his foot.

Madrid wrapped up a famous triumph in the final minute when Asensio – eight minutes after coming on - slotted in left-footed from eight yards after superb work from Marcelo down the left in an emphatic triumph for Zidane.

Cristiano Ronaldo beats Lionel Messi to Champions League top scorer award

    cristiano-ronaldo-juventus-real-madrid_6c82w8bz6m1w14atmmugvwosf.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo has beaten Lionel Messi to the Champions league top scorer award after netting twice in the final against Juventus.Madrid beat Juve 4-1 in Cardiff on Saturday, the Portugal international getting his side's opener after 20 minutes and later scoring their third after 64.

That means Ronaldo finishes the tournament on 12 goals, one clear of Messi after the Barcelona forward did not play since the quarter-finals, when his side lost to Juve.Ronaldo has now either won or shared the award for five consecutive seasons – a record - and has six overall top scorer triumphs.

Messi is one behind on five wins. He was outright winner for four straight years from 2009-2012, before sharing the accolade in 2014-15 with Ronaldo and Barca team-mate Neymar, when they all struck 10 times in that campaign.

Ronaldo was nine adrift of Messi going into the quarter-finals this season, but eight goals in two ties against Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid brought him back into contention before the Juve clash.Casemiro and Marco Asensio scored Madrid's other goals on a glorious night for Zinedine Zidane's.

Ronaldo hails Real Madrid’s ‘amazing season’ after Champions League final win over Juventus

    cristiano-ronaldo-real-madrid-champions-league_aru5lcxahawk18vblp0lr22kh.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo has paid tribute to his Real Madrid side, describing their campaign as “amazing” after helping them to a record 12th European Cup triumph.

Zinedine Zidane’s men swept aside Juventus 4-1 at the Millennium Stadium to claim the trophy to become the first team to retain the crown since AC Milan in 1990.

Ronaldo was inevitably to the forefront as he scored their first and third goals of the evening. Casemiro grabbed the second after Mario Mandzukic had equalised in stunning style, while Marco Asensio added a fourth in stoppage time.

Speaking after the match, Ronaldo commented: “It's been incredible, another amazing season. To finish the year with the Champions League and the record, I'm very happy.”

Ronaldo became just the second player to score in three European Cup finals in Wales, having previously struck in 2008 and 2014, while Madrid also became the first side to reach 500 goals in the competition since its rebrand in 1992-93.

During the last calendar year, the Portuguese has also won Euro 2016 with his country and the Primera Division title. On an individual basis, he claimed both the Ballon d’Or and the FIFA Best Player award.

Isco stunned to win third Champions League: I would never have dreamed this!

    isco-cropped_1qfr41xsptxof1b443lvlpy47w.jpg

Real Madrid star Isco says winning a third Champions League crown in four seasons is beyond his wildest dreams.

Zinedine Zidane's men thrashed 10-man Juventus 4-1 in the Cardiff final on Saturday, becoming the first team in the Champions League era to retain the trophy. AC Milan were the last to do so in Europe's elite club competition in 1990 and Isco, who now has three European titles by the age of 25, hailed Madrid's unprecedented streak of success.

"It is the third Champions League in four years for Madrid and my third as a professional - I would never have dreamed it in my life!" Isco told Antena3."This becomes easier thanks to the family we have formed together."If I knew it was going to end like this, I would sign up for it every season."

Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice, while Casemiro and substitute Marco Asensio were also on target in an emphatic win over Juve, whose goal was a spectacular one from Mario Mandzukic.

Isco has been the subject of frenzied transfer speculation for much of the season with only one year left on his contract, but after the triumph, he reiterated his desire to stay.

"I hope to renew soon - there is no better place than Madrid to play football," added Isco."The first half was much more difficult against a team of beasts in every area. In the second, we have seen the best Madrid of the season."

Ramos: This was Real Madrid's date with history - our success is no accident

    ramos-cropped_yb1x4s3n6fqm11kt51qvyz7o5.jpg

Sergio Ramos described the Champions League final as Real Madrid's date with history after they became the first team to retain the trophy in the modern era, a run of success he stressed is no accident.

The Madrid captain celebrated his third winners' medal in the competition after his side thrashed 10-man Juventus 4-1 in Cardiff on Saturday.Zinedine Zidane's men are the first since AC Milan in 1990 – when the tournament was known as the European Cup – to win back-to-back continental crowns.

"We had a date with history, we really wanted to win and we managed to achieve what no-one has ever done before – win two Champions League finals in a row," Ramos told reporters."Our success is no accident and three Champions League in four years is crazy.

"We are extremely proud of this team and this club. We made very few mistakes, which is key in these matches, and we are the deserving winners. We knew what we had to do and did it perfectly."

Ramos added: "I think about those who supported me and put up with me, including my wife, my children, my parents and all Madridistas."It is a historic day and we must savour it and be aware of what we achieved. We have formed a big group led by a great coach in Zizou."

Cristiano Ronaldo awarded Champions League final Man of the Match award

    hd-cristiano-ronaldo-real-madrid_1kr7p6sk573af1cjam6tk1t1cr.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo has been named as UEFA’s Man of the Match for the 2017 Champions League final, during which he scored twice for Real Madrid in a 4-1 win over Juventus.

The Portugal international opened the scoring with his side’s first shot of the encounter in the first half. An equaliser from Mario Mandzukic and then a deflected Casemiro strike meant that Ronaldo’s second, a deft near-post finish from a Luka Modric cross, put his side 3-1 up and cruising towards the title.

After the encounter, former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson presented the 32-year-old with the individual prize to go with his team gong.

Ronaldo worked under the Scot when he claimed his first Champions League title, and he has since gone on to claim three more, with Saturday’s success his fourth in total.

Moreover, in netting at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium, he became the first player to score in three finals during the Champions League era, which began in 1992-93, and just the second overall.

We'll be back, promises Juventus boss Allegri

    allegri-cropped_k1rglxog9syt15gr582jo48hb.jpg

Massimiliano Allegri does not believe that Juventus have reached the end of an era, despite losing the Champions League final to Real Madrid.

After going down to Barcelona two years ago, Allegri's men came to Cardiff with more confidence of competing, but they were put to the sword, with Cristiano Ronaldo producing a devastating two-goal display.

It leaves Gianluigi Buffon still yet to taste European Cup glory. The great goalkeeper will play on next season, but his future beyond then is unclear.

Giorgio Chiellini, Leonardo Bonucci and Andrea Barzagli suffered a rare chastening evening in front of Buffon, but Allegri sees no reason to rip things up and start afresh in Turin."I don't think Juventus has reached the end of a cycle," Allegri told a news conference.

"Buffon will still be the goalkeeper next year, same for Barzagli, he will be in the team at least another year."These players still have a lot to give us, the club knows that we can improve our team if we want to achieve higher technical skills.

"We all need rest, myself included but after our holidays we are ready to go back to work with a new drive, a new motivation."Football gives us a chance to try again so this is our goal for next season."

Ronaldo deserves Ballon d'Or, says Perez

    cristianoronaldo-cropped_n8x73aaa535d1eaz5aby81zoy.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo deserves the Ballon d'Or more than anyone else, according to club president Florentino Perez.

Real Madrid star Ronaldo inspired his side to a second consecutive Champions League triumph, his double guiding his team past 10-man Juventus 4-1 in Saturday's decider. It capped off a memorable campaign, during which Zinedine Zidane's men won four trophies, including La Liga.

Perez believes Ronaldo would be a worthy recipient of a record-equalling fifth Ballon d'Or, adding to his successes in 2008, 2013, 2014 and 2016."There is no-one who deserves it more than Cristiano," he told Atresmedia.

Casemiro and Marco Asensio were also on the scoresheet for Madrid in Cardiff, after Mario Mandzukic's stunning overhead kick had Juve level at the break.
Perez was predictably delighted, saying: "We are very happy. We have won, we played very well."I wouldn't know where to start, for the players, the coach, the fans."
