Some iPhone 8 models are bursting open while they’re being charged. An increasing number of the devices are being completely destroyed as the battery seems to swell, causing the screen to pop off.

Apple say they’re aware of a couple of cases and are looking into the matter.

Apple fans have barely unwrapped the packaging on their alarmingly-overpriced new iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus models, and the complaints are already coming in hot. Customers say a strange crackling sound is plaguing the earpiece speaker during phone calls.

What started as the odd Twitter complaint has surged into a flurry of reports, prompting Apple to respond. A spokesperson for tech firm said: ‘We are aware of the issue which is affecting customers in a small number of cases. Our team is at work on a fix, which will be included in an upcoming software release.’ You want to be taking extra-special care of your iPhone 8 — it costs a bomb to have it fixed. AppleCare+ users can have the screen fixed for a small service fee of $29, which ain’t too bad. But they charge $99 for repairs of any other damage. And, unfortunately, the new back glass falls under this category. You can throw tax on the end of that as well.

Numerous users around the world have reported their iPhone 8 or 8 Plus opening up due to a swollen battery. At the time of writing reports include devices in China, Canada, Greece, Japan and Taiwan, forcing Apple to officially look into it.

So far the reports appear to be limited related to the number of devices sold.

The issue shouldn't be directly compared to what transpired with the Galaxy Note7 last year as the iPhone 8's don't appear to be exploding, just cracking open due to a swollen battery.

There's no information at this point about what causes the issue. Some reports suggest the battery swells during charging though some report the phone arriving in a swollen state in its retail box.
