Sri Lanka paves first road with plastic waste

ECONOMYNEXT - Sri Lanka has surfaced the first road with asphalt mixed with non-recyclable plastic waste, in a suburb of the capital using an internationally accepted practice, a Colombo-based engineering firm said.

Asset Group, which has interests in engineering and real estate said a 500 metre road from Ratmalana to Borupana, South of Colombo had been paved with an asphalt mixture containing shredded and molten plastic extracted from municipal waste.

Non-recyclable plastic waste is taken from municipal waste (in Sri Lanka plastic, paper and food waste is now separated in households) shredded and heated with aggregates at 165 degrees centigrade.

"The molten waste-plastic-mix coats the heated aggregates before being coated with bitumen," the firm said.

"The new material – waste plastic modified asphalt concrete mix – will be applied for surfacing of roads under 150 degrees centigrate temperature. "

The firm said the plastic asphalt mixture not only solves the waste problem but cuts road construction costs and makes the pavements more durable.

Tests are conducted on the pilot project, the company said.

"Similar waste plastic modified asphalt mixes are successfully applied to road surfacing in countries such as UK, Canada, Netherlands, Philippines, India and Indonesia," the firm said.

"… Asset Group believes that it would make a significant impact in the road construction sector, while becoming a catalyst for environmental sustainability in the long run."

Asset Group said Sri Lanka's municipal waste had reached 6,500 to 7000 tonnes per day by 2015, with 60 percent coming from the Western province. An estimated 794 tonnes of plastic waste was generated each day, the firm said. (Colombo/Oct03/2018)

Cabinet green lights call for proposals for Light Rail lines

Cabinet this week approved a proposal by the Ministry of Megapolis and Western Development to issue request for proposals (RFP) for three Light Rail Transit (LRT) lines from six Chinese companies.

The companies – China Harbour Engineering Corporation, China Tiesiju Civil Engineering Group Corporation, China Railway Group, China State Construction Engineering Cooperation, CITIC Construction Corporation, and China Railway Construction Corporation – were evaluated and recommended by the Procurement Committee (PC) as prequalified and approved by the Cabinet Appointed Negotiation Committee (CANC).

The Cabinet also approved Megapolis and Western Development Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka’s proposal to employ a national or international consultancy firm to assist the Government in evaluation and negotiations in relation to investor proposals of the WRLRT project(owner’s consultancy service) as prescribed in the Procurement Guidelines, as the competencies needed in technical, financial, legal and economic aspects relating to the project are not available in the country.

Further, the National Agency of Private Public Participation (NAPPP) at the Treasury Ministry is to provide finances and all other assistance for the consultancy service.

The Minister highlighted that obtaining competent consultancy services is vital, as Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) and Social Impact Assessments (SIA), along with the preparation of a Resettlement Action Plan (RAP) have to be performed simultaneously. The projected services are in the range of Rs. 800 million spread over a four to six year period, the Minister told the Cabinet.

Laugfs Gas, Hambantota Port to make Lanka energy hub

Laugfs Gas, is currently working towards making Sri Lanka an energy hub, and Hambantota Port is their launch pad for this ambitious plan. They are of the view that the port being strategically placed in one of the world’s unique locations works to their advantage.

The company believes that they are well placed to become a big competitor to Singapore, and Sri Lanka bringing in a strong strategic partner like CMPort as a port operator, will be a tipping point that would propel the country to a new age of trade and commerce.

The Laugfs Group’s potential customers are some of the fast growing economies positioned in close proximity to the Hambantota Port like, India, Bangladesh, Maldives, Myanmar and East Coast of Africa. With a mega LPG storage complex already established adjacent to this southern port, Laugfs believes they could provide their target markets, a much better service than their competitors.

Once it is commissioned in November 2018, this will be the largest and most modern LPG related infrastructure in the Indian Ocean rim area.


W. K. H. Wegapitiya, Group Chairman of Laugfs Holdings said, “Hambantota Port was under-utilized and did not bring any value to the overall national equation. Therefore, a strategic partner was necessary to develop the port fast. This is not just for the logistics or shipping sector, but also for the economic spillover which will benefit the whole country. GDP will develop, there will be employment opportunities and wealth creation,” Wegapitiya believes that today the world is moving away from old fashioned ideas.

Laugfs has plans to bring LPG in larger vessels from international markets like the Gulf, US, Singapore etc., to Hambantota.

The Group Chairman said that the port’s two jetties dedicated for oil, gas and petroleum business, makes it convenient for the company, especially since the port will provide them with a connection facility to unload vessels through a pipeline connecting to their facility which is about 3 km from the jetty.

UDA invests Rs 45 bn on mega projects
Over Rs. 3.8 bn to build 20,000 housing units by 2020

The Urban Development Authority (UDA) since its inception in 1978 has invested Rs. 15 billion until 2015 and since then has invested 45 billion to date for mega investment projects, said Megapolis and Western Development Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka.

He was speaking at the 40th anniversary of the UDA.



The Minister said two of the mega development projects the Light Railway project in Colombo at a cost of US $ 7.5 billion and the constriction of building of the Prot City (after completion the piling end of this year) would commence early next year. He said that the Prot City will also see a 60 storeyed Colombo International Financial centre, Marina, International University and several other hotel, office and apartment projects.

He said that UDA would get involved in the infarstuctor development of the Port City by providing electracity,water, garbage disposal and also connecting a transprot network linking it with the Colombo city and the Colombo airprot.

The Minister said that the Port City proposal was revisited after the change of government and many enviormental issues were addressed and building plans were adjusted so that theere would be no enviormental impact on the coutnry.

The Minister also said that they have done a study on migration of people and currently over 18% of Sri Lanka’s population live in the Colombo City. “We expect this to increase to 50% by 2025.”

To meet the housing demand for this migration the UDA will invest over Rs. 3.8 billion to build 20,000 housing units by 2020.

Minister said that today as Sri Lanka has migrated to a middle income country the Free trade Zone concept in no longer viable as the country cannot offer cheap labor.”

This is why the UDA is promoting Techno parks where ICT based solutions and services Nano technology and other fourth industrial production investments are taking place from Homagama to Kaduwela.

The UDA are now planning to create similar techno parks in Kandy, Galle and Kurunegala.” Minister while outline plans to develop several other cities including Jaffna said that today UDA is self sufficient.

Sri Lanka to get automated warehouse with Norwegian technology

ECONOMYNEXT - Sri Lanka will set up an automated warehousing and packaging facility with robotics capabilities for fresh fish in collaboration with Norway's Element Logics and Tiqri, the Prime Minister's office said Thursday.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe who is on a three-day official visit to Norway visited sports goods retailer XXL's robotic warehousing facilities.

The automated warehouse uses robots to store, package and ship goods to XXL stores and online shoppers.

The technology can be applied for warehousing and shipping of a range of goods from clothing, fresh fish, fruits and vegetables, the Prime Minister's office said in statement.

XXL's robotic warehousing facility was developed and operated by Element Logic and Tiqri, a software engineering firm.

Element Logic provides logistics services which include automated storage and retrieval systems for warehouses.

Tiqri has offices in Norway, Sweden, Australia, Singapore, Vietnam and Sri Lanka.
Construction of the proposed robotic fish storage unit will begin in December 2018, the Prime Minister's Office said.

ආසියාවේ වේගවත්ම ආර්ථික වර්ධන වේගය හිමි රට රනිල්ගේ යහපාලන වෙනස විසින් සම්බාධක පැනවූ දෙවන උතුරු කොරියාවක් කිරීම පිළිබඳ රනිල් වික්‍රමසිංහට සහ මෛත්‍රිපාල සිරිසේනට ස්තූතිය පුද කළ යුතුය.

නිල නොවන ආරංචි මාර්ග වලට අනුව වසරක කාලයක් සදහා බැංකු ගිණුම් වල පවතිනා මුදල් 10%ක් ෆ්‍රීස් කිරීමට නොමැති නම් ස්ථාවර තැන්පතු කිරීමටද රජය සුදානම් වේ.

මේ අනුව ඔබගේ බැංකු ගිණුමේ ශේෂයෙන් හෝ ඔබේ බැංකු ගිණුමට ලැබෙනා වැටුපෙන් ඔබට ලබා ගත හැක්කේ 90%ක මුදලක් පමණක් වනු ඇත.

රාජ්‍ය සේවයේ වැටුපෙන් රුපියල් 5000ක මුදලක් තාවකාලිකව කප්පාදු කිරීමට යෝජනා වී තිබේ. එම වැටුප් වසරකින් ශේෂය සමග පියවීමටද අයවැයේදි යෝජනා වනු ඇත.

Ritz-Carlton, JW Marriott to enter Lanka with ‘The One’

Two leading global luxury hotel brands chains based in USA, The Ritz-Carlton and JW Marriott will be opening in Colombo in 2022 December at the One Transworks Square (Pvt) Ltd mixed development project, In Colombo Fort.

The One luxury project built with an investment of US$ 550 million will be consist of three glass towers set on four million square feet of prime property.

“Introducing The Ritz-Carlton and JW Marriott brands to Sri Lanka is sure to spark phenomenal interest locally and internationally,” said Chief Marketing Officer, One Transworks Square (Pvt) Ltd Jaideep Wahi.

In addition to The Ritz-Carlton, Colombo and JW Marriott Colombo, the complex will include a combination of offices and residences, high-end retail, a banquet hall, collective fine dining experiences and a helipad. Set to soar 300 meters high, The Ritz-Carlton, Colombo and JW Marriott Colombo will be built in adjacent towers, with the third tower slated to be South Asia’s tallest building at 376 meters high and 92 floors. A beautifully restored heritage structure is also a part of this project.
