To my personal opinion Ranil is not the so called best brain in Asia as you describe here by have some political instinct and king making skills just like his father Osmund Wickramasinghe but at some point he is not smart enough to realized back biters just like Rajapaksa. We can understand this from recent coup which lead by Sirisena.
Beside some weaknesses he has some strong political wit than any other member in parliament.
