This is utterly stupid. I got my degree as a 3 yr one from ucsc - cs. Now working as a tech lead in one of the top IT companies in SL. and almost all of my batch mates got job opportunities before completing the degree. Before graduation 90 percent were already working except for people who dropped the degree or couldn't complete.

Case is that 3yr cs degree is more focused in breadth in CS and designed for people going out as SE s, 4th yr special is more research oriented and focused on depth in CS suited for people going for higher studies.

Its not about 3yr or 4yr or anything that matters in the industry and what matters is your skill + experience. degree is a good boost when starting your career and thats it. 3yr degree people can get more industry experience during the time their batch mates complete the 4th yr. So in this case its a win win situation.

True story! UOC CS has a reputation from 1967. even first computer of Sri Lanka is available at UCSC.:yes: Only people who did maths are taken to this. Syllabus is updated and improved every 5 years based on academic and industry needs. ;);)

whatever it is, software industry in LK is very rudimentary IMO and it's not progressing, we keep doing the same thing over and over again.
most companies do just web development or enterprise app development with .net or ejb/spring or similar technologies.. even the most elite ones don't do anything beyond webservices or very basic big data stuff...
and people tend to think advanced computer science knowledge/understanding is not necessary for the industry because it's never used in (LK) industry.

it worked well so far because those areas were the 'hot' and 'high paid' in the past.. but now these technologies are available everywhere, no longer requires advanced laearning and anyone (even without IT degree) can put up a decent website.... these are no longer highest paid jobs in some countries now

and now the industry is shifting towards machine learning/AI, computational perception, robotics etc which require advanced CS skills. IMO, LK industry is not ready for this. highest paid jobs in the future (already in present too, in US etc) will be in these areas and i'm afraid that our companies don't have the people with skills... we keep doing plain old web dev and enterprise apps.

for these emerging areas, people need advanced CS knowledge/ postgrad CS degrees, not some MBA or project management skills

yeah that's of course the current situation but it's already changing outside lk.. and not to forget 99% of the clients of our companies are non-LK/international ones which directly affects us (and almost anywhere).. few years down the line, regular app dev will be like ui design right now. more people with less complex stuff = less demand + earnings
