Coz a lot of data scientists are from a CS background and they struggle with the statistical concepts, so when you have that (plus when you can truly understand and simply explain the math behind all the algo's and models, you are at high demand)

SO my suggestion, follow = Stats + CS + Maths combination. And stats programming (R/Python) goda daaganna. Also start building your portfolio early on so you will have enough projects to demonstrate your capabiities when you enter the job market (these are the advises that I'd give my younger version if I can)

Can you list some of the companies that hire freshers for data science positions (apart from Linear² and Stax)? I am familiar with R and I have completed a research project (classification) as my final year project and I am sort of interested in pursuing a career in data science.
