20 November 2012 -- The much awaited Sri Lanka’s inaugural and the regions third communication satellite launch would take place next Thursday from Beijing China at 3 30 p.m. Sri Lankan time. The Supreme Group is a fast growing Sri Lankan home grown company with a special focus on Sri Lanka and regional satellite communication opportunities. They have already invested US $ 100 million.

transmitting station in Kandy. The funds for this historic venture are being mobilized through MIL Bank.

Chairman, Supreme Group, R. M. Manivannan speaking to Daily News Business said that they would further invest US $ 60 million next year for further development of the project.

“Our main strength and revenue base is bulk commodity trading which includes large scale contracts of urea, coal, bitumen, PVC, iron ore. In addition we are also involved in reinsurance, investments, oil exploration, mining and consultancy. After the huge success the company enjoyed doing large scale regional business, we wanted to do something big and beneficial to Sri Lanka and this is the reason we decided to launch a satellite for Sri Lanka.”

“Being a patriot this launch of the satellite would once again prove that “nothing is impossible” for a Sri Lankan.”Subsequent to the launch in China the satellite would be positioned right over Sri Lanka and after programming it would be ready by early next year. Manivannan said he has opened doors for a new industry in Sri Lanka and this will trigger a positive attitude especially within the private sector and investor community thus brings in similar large scale, Sri Lankan initiated innovative projects into Sri Lanka.”

“When we made our initial efforts to design, manufacture and launch a satellite owned by us, none of the western manufacturers took us seriously and we have proved our critics wrong by scheduling the launch of the satellite on Thursday.”

With the capital raised and firm plans in place, it was still an uphill task to find the suitable partner who would be willing to offer us the technology support. This is when we contacted the Chinese state owned, China Great Wall Industry Corporation who was a tower of strength for this operation,” he said.

“This project, while commercially creating a whole new industry in Sri Lanka, and would also bring in a total of US $ 320 million within the next three to five years. In addition there will be foreign exchange earnings along with high technology employment generation.”

He also said in a few months the local telecommunication and TV viewing industry would see a major transformation with numerous benefits being offered to them for better quality and lower price.

“Eventually this will lead to technology transfer and we can provide employment and a knowledge base to Sri Lankans who wish to venture into the space industry.”

Supreme SAT Launch Set For Tomorrow

November 20, 2012, Rohitha Rajapaksa says that he is happy to be associated with tomorrow’s launch of Sri Lanka first communication satellite, Supreme SAT I from ‘Xi Chang’ launch centre in China. The satellite built by French manufacturer, Thales will be positioned over Sri Lanka.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s youngest son told The Island that he had been involved in the project for about two years, though he kept a low profile. Responding to a query, Rohitha Rajapaksa said that it would be a joint launch by the Supreme Group of Sri Lanka and China Satellite Communications Company Limited, a state-owned venture.

Asked whether he would be attending the launch, Rajapaksa junior said that he couldn’t make it due to some other commitment also in the same field.

Having received the required expertise as well as training in China, Spain and Russia, Rohitha Rajapaksha joined the Supreme Group or Supreme Sat as a technical advisor/engineer.

Rohitha Rajapaksa said that he was based in China for several months. He said that he joined the Supreme Sat project after completing his Bachelor of Aerospace Engineering degree.

He said that felt he should be involved in the SupremeSAT project though he earlier wanted to become the world’s youngest astronaut. He pointed out that in the SAARC region, only two countries had their own satellites.

When pointed out that they were many other issues, which should be tackled before seeking to own satellites, Rohitha Rajapaksa acknowledged that there were many other pressing requirements. The Supreme Sat launch was a private sector project, he insisted. According to him, Supreme Group intends to establish a Satellite earth station at Pallekele in April next year, followed by the launch of two satellites in June 2013 and December 2015.

Addressing the media in Colombo yesterday, SupremeSAT Chairman R. M. Manivannan explained the circumstances under which he got in touch with Chinese state-owned-China Great Wall Industry Corporation to go ahead with the project. He said that Western manufacturers ignored their initiative, though Supreme Sat was confident of its success in the wake of the conclusion of the conflict.

Manivannan appreciated the role played by Rajapaksha. According to him, the proposed launch in June 2013, too, would be a joint venture, whereas Supreme SAT intended to launch a fully owned satellite in December 2015.

The SupremeSAT – I was built by Thales Alenia Space of France. Design is based on SB 4000 series satellite bus which comes under the medium class telecommunications satellite category with its launch mass of 5100kg. SB 4000 series has a successful flight heritage, hence it's a very stable and reliable space platform. Having a payload of 56 transponders on board SupremeSAT will be capable of providing communications services, including broadband Internet, telecom and broadcasting and will cover parts of the Middle East, South & Central Asia and also Australia.
