‘Man Utd’s recent recruitment has been unforgivable’ – Neville calls for Woodward sacking over expensive ‘mess’ at Old Trafford

Manchester United’s recruitment in recent times has been “unforgiveable”, says Gary Neville, with mismanagement at board level leaving the Reds Devils in a “mess” despite boasting the “second-highest wage bill in the world”.

Those at Old Trafford have continued to spend big across recent transfer windows, but little value has been found in said deals, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looking to tweak the mindset slightly as more emphasis is placed on promising talent. He will need further support from those above him if a long-term rebuilding project is to prove successful.

The United board have not always delivered on expectations, with a number of former stars quick to pick holes in their efforts.Neville has been outspoken in his criticism and reiterated that those behind the scenes need to be bringing much more to the table in a sporting sense.

And he former Red Devils defender seemed to take a swipe at executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward when he told his podcast for Sky Sports on the back of a 2-0 defeat for Solskjaer’s side against arch-rivals Liverpool: “I can’t believe the investment that’s been put into the squad in the last five, six, seven years and you end up with that out on the pitch.

“I saw a statistic two weeks ago that United have the second-highest wage bill in the world. And that’s the squad they’ve got. It’s unforgivable. It really is.

“I can’t change the ownership of Manchester United, no one can.“But I’m struggling to understand why the ownership have persisted in trusting that management team to oversee the building of a Premier League title-winning team since Sir Alex Ferguson left.

“Because if you don’t lose your job for essentially overseeing that investment, that wage bill, and putting that team out on the pitch then I have to say something is really wrong.

“There’s real talent in that executive team, they can create revenue, they can do things within the football club that can help to be fair.

“But in terms of what the club needed to do for a number of years now is put the best in class football operators into that club and they’re not doing it.

“They’re not doing it and it’s a mess. They need to sort it out and quickly.”
The Glazer family continue to call the shots at Old Trafford despite fierce opposition to their ongoing presence and regular rounds of speculation regarding potential interest in big-money takeovers.

American owners have run up huge debts during their time in Manchester and will need to take more money from the pot if United are to make the kind of investment that a loyal fan base is crying out for.

Liverpool are extraordinary but I am only focused on improving Man City - Guardiola

Pep Guardiola concedes Liverpool are "extraordinary", but he is more focused on improving Manchester City than worrying about how they stack up against the runaway Premier League leaders.City have won the title in the past two seasons under Guardiola yet now trail Liverpool, who have a game in hand, by 16 points.

The Reds have dropped just two points in the top flight, but City manager Guardiola would prefer to focus on how the defending champions can raise their game.

"In terms of what we are as a team, we are open, we accept," he told a news conference before a crucial trip to Sheffield United on Tuesday."We cannot deny it - the Liverpool team is extraordinary in terms of football, in terms of results.

"But every day I live almost 24 hours thinking about my team and what we are, what we are doing, what we can do better. I'm not too much distracted by other teams in other leagues or, in this case, Liverpool."

City have scored more league goals than any other team in the division this season, yet they have also conceded more than Sheffield United and last Saturday's opponents Crystal Palace, who claimed a 2-2 draw at the Etihad Stadium.

"We concede few, but the opponents score goals from a few chances," Guardiola said. "That is difficult to solve. We have to improve in this area.
"We have scored I don't know how many more goals than Liverpool [12], so our way is good. I don't have the statistics here, but I don't think we concede more chances in one game. From the few, we concede goals that we shouldn't and drop points.

"You start from Tottenham in the first game, they shoot twice in the half on target and score two goals. Norwich shoot three times and score three goals.
"When this happens, it's difficult to fight against this Liverpool. We have to improve in this area."

Guardiola revealed John Stones and Benjamin Mendy had knocks following the weekend draw, although he was not yet sure if the issues would keep them out against the Blades.

The Spaniard felt criticism of Stones after the Palace game, in which he appeared to struggle against Wilfried Zaha, was harsh.

"It was unfair, yeah," he said. "We are there, I am there. Ups and downs in the career, the football manager always has to be strong. We know his quality."

Lampard addresses Cavani to Chelsea rumours as Blues boss confirms Moses set for another transfer

Frank Lampard gave little away when quizzed on rumours linking Chelsea with Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani, but did confirm that Victor Moses is likely to secure another move away from the club.

Chelsea suffered a 1-0 defeat away at Newcastle on Saturday, after failing to make their dominance count in the final third of the pitch.

The Blues have relied heavily upon the talents of 22-year-old Tammy Abraham up front this season, but he was largely ineffective against the Magpies, and was eventually replaced by Michy Batshuayi.

Lampard admitted that Abraham had a "difficult afternoon" at St James' Park, while also hinting that Chelsea need to bolster their attacking ranks with the January window is open.

A number of top players across Europe have been linked with a transfer to Stamford Bridge recently, including Cavani, who has asked to leave PSG this month amid interest from Atletico Madrid.

When asked to address speculation over a possible move to Chelsea for the Uruguay international, Lampard told a press conference: "He is a great player. I am not sure what the situation is though."He has experience, but many players do."The Blues could end up losing two players before the winter market closes, with Olivier Giroud and Victor Moses expected to reunite with Antonio Conte at Inter.

Moses is currently on loan at Fenerbahce, but Goal has learned that the Nerazzurri are lining up a €10 million (£9m/$11m) swoop for his services.
Lampard added on the out-of-favour pair: "With Oli [Giroud] there isn’t much more to say. On Moses, he is coming back with a view to going somewhere else. Talks are ongoing."

The Chelsea boss was speaking ahead of his side's meeting with Arsenal at the Bridge on Tuesday night, which could have a huge bearing on this season's race for Champions League qualification.

The Blues are fourth at the moment, and hold a 10-point lead over the Gunners, who have slipped to tenth after a frustrating campaign during which consistency has proved elusive.

Arsenal have, however, shown signs of improvement since Mikel Arteta was drafted in to succeed Unai Emery in the managerial hot seat, and will be out for revenge after being beaten by Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium on December 29.

"It will be a very tough match. This league is so competitive," Lampard said. "I know that they are a good team with good players."There has been a change when Arteta came on, we must be on guard and at our best."

:(:(‘Man Utd need a repeat of Larsson loan’ – Red Devils require another six players after poor recruitment, says Neville

Manchester United need up to six new players and could explore a loan deal up front similar to that which once brought Henrik Larsson to the club, says Gary Neville, with a Red Devis legend once again taking aim at the Old Trafford board when he comes to transfer failings.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is expected to bolster his ranks during the current window, with much of the focus so far in January having been on midfield creativity, with a big-money deal for Sporting star Bruno Fernandes still being mooted.

An untimely injury to Marcus Rashford has, however, seen attention switch to the final third of the field, with Neville among those to have called for a proven performer to be drafted in.

The former United full-back told his podcast for Sky Sports: “To lose Marcus Rashford is a big problem for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.“He wasn’t blessed with a large pool of strikers and forwards anyway.

“I don’t know how they’re going to cope without him other than to try and sign somebody who can fill that gap and that’s not going to be easy because no one is going to let Manchester United just pick someone off the top shelf and go ‘you have him’ – everybody is looking to look after their own club and they just have to be somehow smart enough to get someone who can do a job for the club.

“It might even be a loan. In the past, United brought Henrik Larsson in short-term and he did a very good job for the club just to get the club over the line.
“It might just be it’s not the perfect striker who comes in in January but Manchester United just need a body, somebody who can get out there and contribute essentially what that team needs until the end of the season.”

Neville added on United’s needs: “Marcus Rashford is out for potentially two or three months so they’re going to be light up front. You look at the midfield, it’s bleak. Paul Pogba is out, having an operation, but there’s more than the midfield and centre-forward that needs changing at the club.

“They need a centre-back. They need a left-back. They need a wide player, they need a striker, they need a midfielder. There’s five or six players needed in that squad not just one or two. Yeah, immediate to patch things up a midfielder and striker are essential because of the injuries to Rashford and Pogba but there are other things Manchester United have to be targeting.“It’s a squad that’s had hundreds of millions spent on it but it looks like it needs hundreds of millions more. That’s worrying.”

United were given another indication of how far they are behind the elite in their latest Premier League outing, with arch-rivals Liverpool inflicting a 2-0 defeat on the Red Devils as they edge their way towards a first top-flight title in 30 years.

Angry Man Utd fans attack Ed Woodward's house with flares

The home of Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has been attacked by fans armed with flares.

Footage on social media shows a small number of supporters throwing the incendiary objects over the gate of Woodward's property with graffiti also reportedly sprayed on the fence surrounding his home. It is believed that neither Woodward or his family were home at the time of the attack, with the Red Devils quick to condemn an incident which is now being investigated by police.

"Manchester United Football Club have tonight been made aware of the incident outside the home of one of our employees," a club statement released on Tuesday night read.

"We know that the football world will unite behind us as we work with Greater Manchester Police to identify the perpetrators of this unwarrantedattack."Anybody found guilty of a criminal offence, or found to be trespassing on this property, will be banned for life and may face prosecution."Fans expressing opinion is one thing, criminal damage and intent to endanger life is another. There is simply no excuse for this."

A statement from Cheshire police also confirmed that a "large group" targeted the property: "At around 10.45pm on January 28, Cheshire police were notified of an incident of criminal damage that had taken place earlier this evening with a large group targeting a property in the Nether Peover area.

"Thankfully no-one was harmed, and officers will liaise with security officials over the coming days to establish the full circumstances surrounding this incident and identify those involved."The attack comes just days after United's FA Cup victory over Tranmere Rovers was overshadowed by threatening fan chants that were directed at Woodward.

One of the chants sung by a section of fans was: "Gonna die, gonna die, Ed Woodward’s gonna die. How we kill him, I don’t know. Chop him up from head to toe. All I know is Woodward’s gonna die."

Woodward has become a figure of increasing frustration among Red Devils supporters as the club have struggled to compete since the retirement of former manager Sir Alex Ferguson. The 48-year-old played a key role in the Glazers' takeover of United in 2005 and was subsequently handed a position within the club before being named executive vice-chairman in 2012.

In his first transfer window in the role, Woodward failed to win fans over with a lack of signings and, after missing out on Cesc Fabregas, the decision to sign Marouane Fellaini from Everton was widely ridiculed.

And supporters have been similarly frustrated with a lack of transfer dealingsin the January transfer window of this year.

The decision not to replace Romelu Lukaku following his move to Inter in 2019, coupled with the injury suffered by Marcus Rashford, has left the Red Devils short in attack with the likes of Islam Slimani and Odion Ighalo having been linked.

A move for Bruno Fernandes does appear to be on the brink of going through, however, with Goal confirming that United have reached an agreement to sign the Sporting CP midfielder in a deal worth an initial €55 million (£47m/$60m).

Tottenham complete £25m Bergwijn signing from PSV

Tottenham have completed the signing of Steven Bergwijn from PSV for a reported £25 million ($33m) fee plus add-ons, with the winger putting pen to paper on a deal until 2025.

Bergwijn arrived in north London at the start of the week to undergo a medical after being granted permission to sit out senior training with the rest of the PSV squad. The 22-year-old also missed PSV's 1-1 draw against Twente on Sunday - a decision which saw him criticised for trying to force through a transfer to the Premier League.

Bergwijn publicly denied any wrongdoing and the Eredivisie outfit's head coach Ernest Faber later confirmed that it was a sanctioned decision.

The Netherlands international scored five goals and laid on 10 assists in 16 league appearances for PSV this season, while also featuring in the Champions League group stages.

Bergwijn played in PSV's 2-1 defeat to Tottenham in Europe's elite competition last term and will now be charged with helping Jose Mourinho's men progress to the latter stages once again.

The mercurial attacker signed a new four-year deal at Philips Stadion back in August, and the club were hopeful he would continue his development in familiar surroundings. However, the lure of the Premier League has proven too strong to ignore, and he has become Tottenham's second new arrival of the winter transfer window.

Bergwijn will inherit Christian Eriksen's No.23 shirt following his move to Inter, with Spurs confirming the transfer on Wednesday morning: "We are delighted to announce the signing of Steven Bergwijn from Eredivisie side PSV Eindhoven.

"Steven has signed a contract with the club that will run until 2025 and will wear the number 23 shirt."Benfica midfielder Gedson Fernandes joined the club on an 18-month loan deal earlier this month, while the north Londoners have also confirmed they've activated an option to sign Giovani Lo Celso on a permanent basis.

Bergwijn, meanwhile, could be in line for his Tottenham debut when they play host to reigning Premier League champions Manchester City on Sunday.Mourinho's men are currently sixth in the table and six points behind fourth-placed Chelsea, with little margin for error remaining as they aim to secure Champions League qualification for a fifth successive season.

After their clash with City, the winter break comes into effect in the top flight, but Tottenham will have less time off than their rivals due to an FA Cup fourth-round replay against Southampton on February 5.

:love:Bruno Fernandes completes €55m Man Utd move

    24091704-7946773-image-m-42_1580404379288.jpg

Manchester United have completed the €55 million (£47m/$60m) signing of Bruno Fernandes from Sporting, with the midfielder penning a five-and-a-half-year contract at Old Trafford.

A long-running transfer saga has finally been brought to a close, with the Red Devils snapping up the Portugal international after pursuing him throughout the winter window.Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had made reinforcements in the engine room a top priority for January.

With Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay sidelined through injury, United havefound themselves short in an important area of the field.Fernandes’ arrival should help to address those shortfalls, with the 25-year-old arriving in English football with a big reputation.

This is not the first spell that the 25-cap Portuguese has spent outside of his homeland, with a four-year spell in Italy between 2013 and 2017 seeing Fernandes turn out for Udinese and Sampdoria. It is, however, over recent seasons that his stock has risen considerably.United are buying into his current ability and future potential, with the hope being that value can be found in a big-money transfer.

Fernandes promised to give his all to the club's cause before thanking Solskjaer at his unveiling, stating: "My love of Manchester United really started when I used to watch Cristiano Ronaldo play and ever since then I have been a big fan of this great club.

"For me to now play for Manchester United feels incredible, I have worked hard to get to this moment and I can promise the fans that I will give everything for the badge to help bring us more success and trophies. I want to thank Sporting for everything they have done for me.

"It is surreal to hear the nice words that have been said about me from players that used to play for this team. A massive thank you to Ole and everyone at Manchester United for the trust they have shown in me and I can’t wait to start to repay that on the pitch.”Fernandes will need to hit the ground running, having arrived in Manchester midway through another inconsistent campaign for the Red Devils, and will face added pressure from his price tag.

Solskjaer, though, having made a classy operator his top target, is confident that a shrewd piece of business has been carried out.“We have been tracking Bruno for many months and everyone here has been tremendously impressed with all his attributes and what he will bring to this team," he said. "Most importantly he is a terrific human being with a great personality and his leadership qualities are clear for all to see.

Bruno’s goals and assists stats speak for themselves, he will be a fantastic addition to our team and he will help us push on in the second part of the season.

"The winter break is coming at a perfect time for us to integrate Bruno into the squad and for him to get to know his team-mates.”With another option brought into United’s midfield, attention can now turn to the pursuit of further firepower.

Marcus Rashford remains on the treatment table, with Solskjaer conceding after a 1-0 derby win over Manchester City that was not enough to book a place in the Carabao Cup final that he wants to bolster his attacking ranks .He said: “We need more goalscorers, more goals, someone who wants to break their nose or toe to score.

“It doesn’t always have to be nice goals. I need to challenge them more.”It remains to be seen whether a deal can be done before the 11pm deadline on Friday.United will, however, have Fernandes at their disposal when they return to action on Saturday with a Premier League home date against Wolves.
