All Champions League & Europa League matches postponed to combat coronavirus spread

UEFA have announced that all Champions League and Europa League matches set for next week have now been postponed amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Manchester City's match with Real Madrid and Juventus' clash with Lyon had already been suspended, but Wednesday and Thursday's ties have all now been affected.

That means Bayern Munich vs Chelsea and Barcelona vs Napoli will no longer go ahead behind closed doors as planned, while Man Utd, Wolves, Inter, Roma and many others will see their games rescheduled.

In a statement released on Friday morning, UEFA said: “In the light of developments due to the spread of Covid-19 in Europe and related decisions made by different governments, all UEFA club competitions matches scheduled next week are postponed.

“This includes the remaining UEFA Champions League, Round of 16 second-leg matches scheduled on 17 and 18 March 2020; all UEFA Europa League, Round of 16 second-leg matches scheduled on 19 March 2020; all UEFA Youth League, quarter-final matches scheduled on 17 and 18 March 2020.“Further decisions on when these matches take place will be communicated in due course.

“As a consequence of the postponements, the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League quarter-final draws scheduled for 20 March have also been postponed.

“UEFA yesterday invited representatives of its 55 member associations, together with the boards of the European Club Association and the European Leagues and a representative of FIFPro, to a videoconference meeting on Tuesday 17 March to discuss European football’s response to the outbreak.”
UEFA had been one of the very few governing bodies left to call a temporary halt to match action, with Italy's Serie A, Spain's La Liga, France's Ligue 1, and Netherlands' Eredivisie all having suspended play.

The English Premier League was also added to that list on Friday, with the FA releasing the following statement:

"The FA, Premier League, EFL and Barclays FA Women’s Super League and FA Women’s Championship have collectively agreed to postpone the professional game in England until 3 April at the earliest."

The German Bundesliga is still set to go ahead, at least in some capacity, with the DFL announcing that Bayern Munich's away trip to Union Berlin will go ahead as planned.

Bayern and Spain midfielder Thiago Alcantara labelled the decision "irresponsible and imprudent".

:love::love:Fernandes wins Premier League Player of the Month award after impressive start to Man Utd career

    DmZ3B0U.jpg

Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes has been named the Premier League's Player of the Month for February after making a huge impact at Old Trafford following his €55 million (£50m/$61m) winter move from Sporting.United finally managed to lure the Portugal international away.

From Jose Alvalade Stadium after many months of speculation on January 30, tieing the mercurial playmaker down to a five-and-a-half-year contract. The 25-year-old has adapted to the demands of English football quicker than anyone could have predicted, with an eye-catching debut during a 0-0 home draw against Wolves showing a glimpse of what was to come.

Fernandes followed up that display by playing a key role in a 2-0 victory over Chelsea on February 17, with his perfectly flighted corner setting up Harry Maguire to head home the all-important second goal at Stamford Bridge.

The ex-Sporting talisman grabbed his first goal in United colours a week later, netting the opener from the penalty spot to set Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men on their way to a 3-0 win against Watford at Old Trafford.

Fernandes has been rewarded for his impressive start in Manchester with the Player of the Month accolade, becoming the first Portuguese player to pick up the prize since Deco with Chelsea back in August 2008.

He also joins Anthony Martial (September 2015), Zlatan Ibrahimovic (December 2016) and Marcus Rashford (January 2019) as the only United players to have won the award in the lean post-Sir Alex Ferguson era.

“Since I was a kid it was a dream to play for Man United, and to be there at Old Trafford is the biggest dream of my career," Fernandes said after finishing ahead of Marcos Alonso, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Matt Doherty and Nick Pope in the final voting.

“When you come to a new club you always want to score, and the first goal is special. It doesn't matter how the goal is scored, but important is the goal’s worth.

“I’m happy with my start, but from now I need to give more, to be better.”Fernandes is currently taking in an enforced break from action with the rest of the United squad as the footballing authorities bid to combat the coronavirus outbreak, which has caused major disruptions to the sporting calendar across the world.

The Red Devils were made to play their latest Europa League fixture behind closed doors due to the ongoing crisis, running out 5-0 winners against LASK in the first-leg of their last-16 tie on Thursday, with Fernandes adding another assist to his tally.

Manchester City 3-0 Arsenal: Sterling and De Bruyne benefit from David Luiz's nightmare

    raheemsterling-cropped_1dda26m46aimx1pclu5kx0iyri.jpg

Raheem Sterling, Kevin De Bruyne and Phil Foden were on target as Manchester City impressed on their Premier League restart with a convincing 3-0 win over 10-man Arsenal at a wet Etihad Stadium.

It was an unhappy return for former City assistant and now Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta, whose positive test for coronavirus led to the postponement of this fixture and decisively moved the Premier League towards suspension in March.

Perhaps it was the three-month hiatus that accounted for David Luiz's forgettable evening, his woeful misjudgement allowing Sterling to score his first goal of 2020 just before the break.

The Brazil defender then saw red for fouling Riyad Mahrez after more poor defending, with De Bruyne converting the 51st-minute penalty.

City's only worry was when Eric Garcia was taken away on a stretcher after an ugly collision with team-mate Ederson, before Foden rounded out the win in the first of 11 additional minutes.

After a minute's silence was observed, players from both sides took a knee in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement shortly before kick-off.

Bernd Leno tipped a 20-yard De Bruyne free-kick over the top in a pedestrian opening in which Arsenal lost Granit Xhaka and Pablo Mari to injury, with the hapless David Luiz replacing the latter.

City found their groove, though, and Sterling cut in from the left to test Leno, who brilliantly denied David Silva after another slick move by the hosts.

Sterling was then guilty of wastefulness when trying to scoop a close-range effort over Leno as Arsenal's defence became stretched.

But it was third time lucky for Sterling on the stroke of half-time. David Luiz made a complete hash of De Bruyne's throughball and the England forward rifled across Leno on the half-volley.

David Luiz's nightmare continued in the second half when he dragged down Riyad Mahrez and was shown a straight red.

De Bruyne emphatically found the bottom-right corner to end City's run of four missed Premier League penalties.

Leno also denied De Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan before there was a sour note to proceedings when Garcia was hurt after being accidentally clattered by his own goalkeeper.

Following a long delay, Foden tapped into an empty goal when fellow substitute Sergio Aguero struck the post.

Napoli 0-0 Juventus (4-2 pens): Partenopei win Coppa after shoot-out

    meretinsigne-cropped_1ket54kohz25f1dtr208opgrxf.jpg

Napoli lifted the Coppa Italia with a 4-2 penalty shoot-out triumph over Juventus and former coach Maurizio Sarri on Wednesday following a dire goalless draw.

The Partenopei deserved their sixth cup triumph after passing up some big chances in the 90 minutes as Juve's star attackers failed to show at the Stadio Olimpico.

Gianluigi Buffon made a succession of vital stops and the stage appeared set for the veteran to lead the Bianconeri to glory in the shoot-out, yet two team-mates failed from the spot as Napoli kept their nerve.

Alex Meret - only playing due to David Ospina's suspension - saved from Paulo Dybala, before Danilo missed the target entirely, extending Sarri's wait for a first major domestic honour.

The ex-Chelsea boss spent three years in Naples and failed to get the better of Juve, where his contentious appointment at the start of this season has not yet delivered silverware.

Sarri's side saw their best opportunity arrive in the first five minutes of the final, but Meret was equal to Cristiano Ronaldo's low shot after Dybala pounced on a defensive error.

The best of the efforts came at the other end, starting with Lorenzo Insigne's curling free-kick that bounced away off the left-hand post.

Pressure built on Buffon's goal heading into the interval and he blocked with his legs from Diego Demme's drive and then touched another Insigne attempt around the post.

Napoli substitute Arkadiusz Milik blasted off target from a dangerous position in the second period, while Insigne was similarly wayward when faced with a tight angle.

Further Buffon heroics were reserved for the final seconds of stoppage time, as the World Cup winner got down to Nikola Maksimovic's powerful header before helping to divert Eljif Elmas' close-range follow-up away via the upright.

But it would be Meret, not Buffon, who would prove the match-winner, saving superbly from Dybala and watching Danilo hack an awful penalty over the crossbar.

Insigne, Matteo Politano, Maksimovic and Milik all found the net to secure Napoli's first trophy since winning the Supercoppa Italiana under Rafael Benitez - Sarri's predecessor - in 2014, also against Juve after a shoot-out.

Osasuna 0-5 Atletico Madrid: Joao Felix stars as Rojiblancos run riot

Joao Felix struck twice as Atletico Madrid ended a three-match winless streak in LaLiga in style with a 5-0 hammering of Osasuna on Wednesday.

Diego Simeone's side had slipped to sixth prior to their trip to El Sadar Stadium, but Joao Felix's double set the stage for them to move into the top four.

Having broken the deadlock in the 27th minute, Joao Felix was on hand to tuck in his and Atleti's second shortly after the hour, with Adrian Lopez spurning a glorious chance to get Osasuna back into the game.

But any lingering doubt over the result was eradicated when Marcos Llorente drilled home with 11 minutes remaining.

Llorente then teed up Alvaro Morata to add a coolly taken fourth, before Yannick Carrasco completed the rout.

It was a quiet night for Jan Oblak as he set the record for the fewest games played to rack up 100 clean sheets in the Spanish top flight, the century reached in his 182nd appearance.

Diego Costa was Atleti's greatest threat in the opening stages, but it was strike partner Joao Felix who opened the scoring with a blistering first-time finish high into the net.

Angel Correa failed to take advantage of fine work from Joao Felix shortly before half-time, but Atleti's record signing made no such mistake 11 minutes after the restart, calmly slotting into a gaping net after latching onto Costa's square ball.

Adrian should have made an instant impact a minute after his introduction from Osasuna's bench, yet the former Atleti striker failed to keep his composure from close range.

Atleti soon had the win wrapped up, Llorente firing in a low finish before setting up Morata three minutes later, with the striker's goal awarded by VAR after initially being disallowed for offside.

Llorente claimed a second assist two minutes from time, providing Carrasco with a simple finish to add further gloss to a resounding triumph.
