Liverpool are close to agreeing a deal with Bayern Munich for Thiago Alcantara.
The initial fee is around the £22m mark for a player who has a year left on his contract.
It had initially looked like any deal would be dependent on the future of Gini Wijnaldum, who is also in the final year of his Anfield contract.
However, Liverpool have decided to make their move now.

😢😢😢Manchester United 1-3 Crystal Palace: Zaha double stuns Solskjaer's shambolic Red Devils

    74TsSDH.jpg

Wilfried Zaha returned to haunt Manchester United with a deadly double as Crystal Palace landed a dramatic 3-1 win to leave Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reeling. Just as they did in the early weeks of last season, Palace took all three points from their trip to Old Trafford, as a brittle United team were picked apart.

Andros Townsend hit a seventh-minute opener but the match was still in the balance with around 20 minutes to play when Palace were awarded a penalty, after Jordan Ayew's flick struck the hand of Victor Lindelof. Goalkeeper David de Gea looked to have made himself a hero when he saved the softly struck penalty from Ayew, only for a re-take to be ordered, and this time former United winger Zaha stepped up to smash the ball high into the net.

United new boy Donny van de Beek pulled one back, but Zaha added a third Palace goal in the 85th minute, holding off weak link Lindelof and drilling beyond De Gea from the edge of the penalty area.

Lindelof's grim outing began when his timid defending allowed Jeffrey Schlupp to send over the low cross from the left that Townsend smashed back across goal from beyond the far post, finding the bottom left corner to put the visitors ahead.

United peppered the Palace goal but without ever looking genuinely menacing. Indeed, it was Palace who looked the most potent and Ayew drew a save from De Gea early in the second half before Townsend had a dangerous shot deflected over. There was relief in the United ranks when Zaha burst through and lashed the ball past De Gea, only to be shown to have run offside.

Yet not even a De Gea penalty save offered the real succour they were seeking. The Spaniard, preferred to Dean Henderson, dived to his right to make a comfortable stop, but he had moved a fraction off his line before the shot and was punished. Ayew handed over responsibility to Zaha, who fired high into the net.

Zaha joined United in January 2013 but barely played for the club before being shipped out on loan to Cardiff and then returning to Palace. Their loss has been the Eagles' gain, with Zaha becoming a Premier League star and frequently linked to bigger clubs. Van de Beek, on as a substitute, got United back into this game, but Zaha had the final say with his terrific second goal.

Arsenal 2-1 West Ham: Nketiah edges Gunners to victory

    7E1P1nM.jpg

Eddie Nketiah came off the bench to score a late winner as Arsenal edged past West Ham 2-1 in the Premier League at Emirates Stadium on Saturday. The Gunners looked destined to labour to a draw in their first home game of the season until Nketiah slotted home Dani Ceballos' pass with five minutes remaining.

Nketiah had only come on in the 77th minute for Alexandre Lacazette, who had opened the scoring in the first half with his 50th goal for Arsenal in all competitions.Michail Antonio equalised before half-time and also rattled the crossbar with a header before Nketiah popped up to consign the Hammers to a second successive defeat to start the campaign.

Jarrod Bowen felt he should have been awarded a penalty when challenged by Gabriel but nothing was given, and Arsenal moved in front courtesy of Lacazette's powerful header from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's cross. Gabriel avoided conceding a penalty again when the ball hit him high on the arm, yet West Ham drew level on the stroke of half-time when Antonio turned home Ryan Fredericks' low delivery.

Antonio was unable to add a finish from six yards to Arthur Masuaku's excellent cross after the restart, while he was then denied by the woodwork with a header in the 67th minute. Arsenal came under increasing pressure and Bernd Leno's blushes were spared after the goalkeeper spilled a cross and Bowen's shot was blocked by a host of bodies in the box.

However, it was the Gunners that snatched all three points when Ceballos and Nketiah – who had to clarify they were on good terms after a pre-match altercation at Fulham last weekend – combined for the goal that made it two wins in as many games for Mikel Arteta's side.

Southampton 2-5 Tottenham: Four-goal Son and Kane give Bale a glimpse of what's to come

    RNeATOp.jpg

Gareth Bale was given a glimpse of the forward line he has joined as Son Heung-min's fantastic four-goal haul and a Harry Kane effort earned Tottenham a 5-2 Premier League victory over Southampton.

Real Madrid forward Bale returned to the North London club on Saturday having agreed a season-long loan deal, though he might have been having second thoughts when Danny Ings scored at St Mary's to give another of the Welshman's former clubs a 32rd-minute lead.

However, Son levelled before half-time following a cross from Kane, who then provided another two assists for the South Korean to complete a hat-trick just after the hour mark. The duo then combined for a fourth time as Son scored again in the 73rd minute before Kane added a fifth prior to a late penalty consolation from Ings, with Spurs claiming a win that must have left Bale, currently out injured, itching to make his comeback.

The game began at a frenetic pace as three goals were ruled out in the opening half an hour.Kane thought he had scored a third-minute opener only for VAR to spot an offside against Son in the build-up.

Shortly after Hugo Lloris brilliantly saved from Che Adams, the Frenchman failed to clear his lines with a bizarre header when rushing out and Ings applied the finish, only to be denied as the ball struck his arm first.Moussa Djenepo struck a post and Kane had another effort chalked off for an offside against Lucas Moura before Southampton scored the game's first legitimate goal, Ings collecting Kyle Walker-Peters' ball over the top and rifling into the net.

However, Spurs would go into the break level when Son turned home Kane's cross after good work from Tanguy Ndombele - who was surprisingly substituted at half-time having made his first start since March.Son's touch to steady himself and his finish were Tottenham's only touches in the Saints' box in the first half, and their next made it 2-1.

Again Kane found Son and this time he scored with his left foot to put Jose Mourinho's side ahead less than two minutes after the restart. The pair were not done, though, and Kane found his fellow forward twice more, with Son beating Alex McCarthy on each occasion to take the game away from Saints.

Kane got the goal his performance deserved too, following up in the 82nd minute after substitute Erik Lamela's effort came off a post, meaning Ings' late penalty - awarded following a handball against Matt Doherty - only reduced the eventual margin of defeat for Southampton.

Nice 0-3 Paris Saint-Germain: Mbappe impresses on PSG return

    n3AUrkB.jpg

Kylian Mbappe impressed on his return to action as he helped Paris Saint-Germain to a 3-0 away Ligue 1 win over Nice. The forward was making his first club appearance of the new season on Sunday after testing positive for coronavirus while on international duty with France.

Mbappe scored a penalty that he won himself and then saw his saved shot converted by Angel Di Maria on the rebound as two PSG goals towards the end of the first half proved pivotal.Nice were not at full strength themselves due the impact of COVID-19 but Patrick Vieira's men were occasionally threatening until PSG captain Marquinhos headed in after the break to seal the win.

After Walter Benitez saved Di Maria's volley, the visitors lost Idrissa Gueye to injury midway through the half, with Ander Herrera replacing him shortly before a golden opportunity for Mbappe to open the scoring. The France international looked sure to score after a wonderful passing move involving Mitchel Bakker and Mauro Icardi, only to fire over with a left-footed effort.

Presnel Kimpembe was somehow unable to get on the end of a Di Maria corner and later miscued another effort, before Mbappe atoned for his miss.Seven minutes before the break, Mbappe confidently sent Benitez the wrong way from the penalty spot after a purposeful run into the box had seen him fouled by Khephren Thuram.

Herrera almost made it two but Andy Pelmard deflected his shot onto the post, before lively Nice winger Rony Lopes – who had earlier curled just wide – forced Navas into a key save after a great one-two with Amine Gouiri. But PSG moved firmly into control one minute into first-half stoppage time, Mbappe's magnificent run and shot forcing Benitez to parry, with Di Maria on hand to power in on the follow-up.

    Mendy completes £22m Chelsea move

Chelsea have announced the signing of Edouard Mendy from Rennes, with the goalkeeper joining on a five-year deal at a cost of £22 million ($29m).

Following the announcement on Thursday morning, the France-born Senegal international admitted that it was a dream come true to be signing for such a prestigious club.

Hat-trick hero Havertz dusts off the cobwebs to kickstart Chelsea career

After two less than stellar showings in his opening appearances for Chelsea, there were some - believe it or not - who were already beginning to question whether the Blues were right to spend an initial £62 million ($79m) on the Germany playmaker.

Against Barnsley on Wednesday the former Bayer Leverkusen star clicked into gear, scoring his first career hat-trick as Frank Lampard's side ran out 6-0 winners in the third round of the Carabao Cup.

Barcelona legend Suarez joins Atletico Madrid in €6 million transfer

    bESzwrG.jpg

Barcelona have confirmed that Luis Suarez has joined Atletico Madrid after the two Spanish sides came to terms on a deal for the Uruguayan star.

Atleti will pay Barca €6 million (£5.5m/$7m) to acquire the striker, who departs Camp Nou after six seasons with the club.Suarez had been heavily linked with Juventus in recent weeks as the Italian champions have been in the hunt for a striker, but the Bianconeri moved on to other targets after Suarez was forced to go through a lengthy process of acquiring Italian citizenship.Instead, he'll head to Atleti after a stay with Barca that saw him claim 13 trophies while becoming the club's third-highest all-time goalscorer, only topped by Cesar and Leo Messi.

"FC Barcelona and Atletico Madrid have reached an agreement for the transfer of the player Luis Suarez. The Madrid club will pay FC Barcelona €6 million in variables," the Catalan club announced."FC Barcelona would like to publicly express their gratitude to Luis Suarez for his commitment and dedication and wishes him all the best for the future."Suarez originally made the move to Barcelona in 2014, having emerged as a superstar during his time with Liverpool.

He went on to score 198 goals in 283 games for the Blaugrana, earning the Golden Shoe as Europe’s top scorer after scoring 59 total goals in 2015-16.While at Barca, Suarez won four La Liga titles and a Champions League, as he famously scored against Juventus to secure that European title for Barca. He'll now join Diego Simeone's Atletico outfit, giving the club an option up top following the departure of Alvaro Morata, who recently joined Juventus on an initial 12-month loan deal with an option to buy for €45m (£40m/$52m).

Suarez scored 21 goals in 36 games for Barca last season as he battled injury midway through Barca's campaign in what turned out to be his least-prolific season at the Camp Nou.After arriving in August, new Barcelona head coach Ronald Koeman told Suarez he would not be in his plans for the upcoming season, sealing the 33-year-old's fate at Camp Nou.Now with Atletico, Suarez could be ready in time for this weekend's match against Granada with the club then set to visit Huesca next Wednesday.
