Sri Lanka’s cabinet of ministers has discussed seeking an International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailout at the latest cabinet meeting, a spokesman said, amid rising difficulties in importing cooking gas and some foods, even as the country’s refinery was shut to save forex.

“There was an in depth discussion on the pros and cons of going to the IMF, but no decision was taken,” co-cabinet spokesman and Energy Minister Udaya Gammanpila told the weekly cabinet news briefing on Tuesday (16).

Sri Lanka is facing forex shortages after record money printing in 2020 and 2021 deplete forex reserves, and undermined the credibility of a soft-peg with the US dollar.

They will push the government to take unpopular but economically healthy decisions. Like no salary increments to government servants/ job cuts/ impose high taxes etc. At the moment I dont see any other option except to seek the IMF support. I think we can get an idea from South Korea. As I can remember during 1998 recession S K went to IMF.

IMF financial reforms led to many suicides in S K.

Good. Most of the government workers are useless and pathetic. All the old shitheads should send home. The retirement age should reduce to 55. All the lazy fuckers should be fired.

The government sector is the highest burden to the country. Most are earning by playing havoc and wasting time.

Yes. good. but it could impact on other sectors also. increase unemployment rate could create more issues. But this is a must task. Its a burden to the country and at least now the government should consider about efficiency of this sector. IMF might push the government towards privatization of many institutes. That will automatically reduce these burdens
