    did he wear golden robes?

mad far as I know, he was offered lot of fancy things but rejected ne?

also I remember reading that he traded fancy robes he got with regular ones others already had.

And in his time, living in a kuttiya wasn’t the ultimate luxury. There were castles and stuff

from what I see, buddha was born in a castle, but he stepped out to live a normal life. Relative to the recognition he had among kings and other rich people, the life he lived was a much below the maximum he could have had.

On the other end, ambitious people born in small villages are wearing robes and building empires.

I don't know how you see it. But for me, this is quite the opposite.

    Devatta rules

According to the Pāli Canon, he taught his sangha to adopt five tapas (literally, austerities) throughout their lives:[12]

    1. that monks should dwell all their lives in the forest,
    2. that they should accept no invitations to meals, but live entirely on alms obtained by begging,
    3. that they should wear only robes made of discarded rags and accept no robes from the laity,
    4. that they should dwell at the foot of a tree and not under a roof,
    5. that they should abstain completely from fish and flesh.
The Buddha's reply was that those who felt so inclined could follow these rules – except that of sleeping under a tree during the rainy season – but he refused to make the rules obligatory. They are among the 13 ascetic practices (dhutanga).

This looks like the extreme end and probably why it was rejected.
Also samanta badra seems to be living in the other extreme end.
I don't think that is what is recommended either.

When monks live regular life, the question I have is why they are still called monks? what should be the differentiating factor?

No extreme ends. Those are really nonsense.Buddha lived way well according ro average people those days. What is the meaning of regular living. It doesn’t have any meaning.I don’t see monks living regular life. It’s far different than what we do.We interpret it to be like our lifes. But it’s not.Regular monk hood did nothing to people at least he’s teaching to grow foods

Well, about Buddha's life, like I said he was born in a castle but lived a normal life.

Anyway, I always wonder how these fellows are getting very rich like this.
To my eyes, he seems to be setting up a big wealth and financial empire by owning lot of lands, starting agriculture economy, etc.

He seems to be exploiting regular person's mental weaknesses (which is what most of those religious leaders / astrologers, gambling businesses does). We naturally have lower capability in dealing with things like probabilistic facts, highly generalized concepts.

And honestly, the stuff he says, I also can say similar things that are a bit abstract and sparsely meaningful (specially after a couple of drinks).

Also, the biggest question is why do people paying him for buddhism when buddhism is pretty much everywhere in Sri Lanka.

lot of things doesn't sound right to me with this type of fellows.

Also the classic image when they open the door a lot of smoke comes out and when the smoke clears, there is someone inside with few girls.
