COLOMBO (News 1st); 100 specially trained personnel of the Rapid Assault Motorcycle Squadron had their passing out ceremony in Katukurunda on Thursday (25) morning.

The ceremony was presided over by Public Security Minister Tiran Alles, and Police Chief Deshabandu Thennakoon.

The IGP highlighted recent tragic events, including the killing of five individuals in the Beliatta police area and four others in separate incidents under the Elpitiya Police Station's jurisdiction. He emphasized that while some may have been involved in criminal activities, the indiscriminate loss of innocent lives underscores the urgent need for effective measures to ensure public safety.

Recognizing the challenges faced by local police officers in addressing such incidents, the IGP stressed the necessity of deploying specialized units equipped with the requisite training and resources. He emphasized the strategic importance of Motorcycle Squadrons, particularly in swiftly responding to organized criminal activities where perpetrators utilize motorcycles for quick getaways.

In response to these challenges, Sri Lanka Police introduced a dedicated motorcycle unit comprising officers trained to counter organized crime effectively.

These officers, akin to those in the renowned Special Task Force, have undergone rigorous training to confront various threats posed by criminal elements within society.

The Police Chief assured that the newly formed motorcycle unit would operate in tandem with existing law enforcement agencies, including the Special Task Force.

Furthermore, the he announced the initial deployment of specially trained officers equipped with fifty motorcycles.
