What makes the base oil in Shell Helix Ultra X special is that it isn’t refined from crude oil like traditional synthetics; instead, it is made from natural gas.

This is achieved through Shell's patented PurePlus Technology, a Gas-to-Liquids (GTL) process that converts natural gas into a crystal-clear base oil. Here is why that matters for your engine:

    1. 99.5% Purity

Because it starts as a gas, the base oil is virtually free of the impurities (such as sulfur, reactive hydrocarbons, and nitrogen) found in crude oil. This "clean slate" allows the oil's additives to work more effectively, keeping the engine closer to factory-clean levels.

    2. Better Extreme-Temperature Performance

    • Cold Starts: The molecular structure is more uniform, allowing the oil to flow faster at extremely low temperatures (down to -40°C in some grades). This reduces wear during those critical seconds after you turn the key.

    • High Heat: It has superior oxidation stability, meaning it doesn't break down or "thin out" as easily when the engine is running under heavy load or in hot climates.

    3. Lower Volatility (Less Oil Burn-off)

PurePlus base oils have a lower evaporation rate than traditional Group III base oils. This means you’ll likely notice:
    • Reduced oil consumption: You won't have to top up the oil as frequently.

    • Cleaner components: Less oil vapor circulating through the system means fewer deposits on valves and pistons.

    4. Enhanced Fuel Economy

The low-friction properties of the GTL base oil allow the engine to turn more easily. Shell Helix Ultra X is specifically formulated to reduce internal engine friction, which can lead to a measurable improvement in fuel efficiency (up to 3% in some tests).

    5. LSPI Protection

Shell Helix Ultra X is designed for modern direct-injection turbocharged engines. The purity of the base oil, combined with specific additives, helps prevent Low-Speed Pre-Ignition (LSPI)—a phenomenon that can cause catastrophic engine damage in downsized, high-output engines.

So basically PAO level purity for Group 3 base oil price?

Yes, i had switched from Castrol Edge 5W-40 to this after long research. Detergent level in this oil is higher than Castrol edge. Also this is - GTL (Gas to Liquid) based oil. Experienced less oil consumption after start using this. Price might get higher in the fiture because Shell Pearl GTL plant was attacked and damaged diring the Middle east war..

Running this one right now, noticeably quietened the engine down compared to valvoline.
