Why aren't we the economically poorest country?

I was just talking with my father about Rathmalana, the neighborhood near Maliban. That neighborhood is unique among other neighborhoods in Sri Lanka. The land had been reclaimed in the 1950's and 60's. Property developers those days developed it into a nice neighborhood with land blocks with grid like road network etc. To this day, that neighborhood feels well developed and peaceful. All this was done before socialists came to power in the early 70's. From that point, the sense of administration and planning went to shit. Everything went to chaos thanks to the low thinkers full of arrogance who dominated the Sri Lankan popular mindset. Now in 2026 we are at the helm of this low key mindset.

Yes that was the exact same time Ceylon was renamed as Sri Lanka and we adopted the Rupee, which went down the hill sooner..

From my understanding Rohana Wijeweera was banned from entering USSR, due to his beliefs - please correct me if I am wrong..

He was I think more aligned to a variant of communism different from that was practiced in Soviet Russia. Yes, he was banned from USSR due to this reason.
