Inter Universities Students Federation (IUSF) convener Udul Premaratne and another member of the same organization were ordered to be remanded till August 12 by the Colombo Chief Magistrate today (August 06).
Submitting a report to courts, the Cinnamon Gardens police stated that Premaratne and the other person were taken into custody while pasting posters on public walls last night, with the phrase ‘Let’s send home the king who desecrated education’.
Police also stated that it was done with the aim of creating a clash between the parents and the government using the recent controversies that arose in the education sector. Police added that they were conducting inquiries whether this had any similarities with incidents of incitement that occurred during the 1988-89 period.
However counsel appearing for the suspects stated that since there was no position of a king in the country, this action had not defamed any official or incited any sections of society.
After considering the statements put forward, Chief Magistrate Nishanta Hapuarachchi ordered that the suspects be remanded till the progress of the investigations are submitted on the next date when the case is to be taken up.
