A demonstration against the Channel-4 Television Corporation organised by British Sri Lankan Forum (BSLF) will be held on 5th September 2009 (Saturday) from 11.00am to 2.00pm in London. BSLF also has launched an online petition campaign which is now circulating around the world collecting signatures for this purpose.
Channel-4 News in the UK broadcasted an unauthenticated video clip, accusing Sri Lanka Army and the government of war crimes. This particular video clip, was shown on Channel-4 news on 25th August 2009. It was later shown on BBC, CNN and many other news channels as well as web sites and led to the damage of the reputation of Sri Lanka and our brave forces. It is also detrimental to the reconciliation, rehabilitation and reconstruction process in Sri Lanka.
Moreover, the healing programmes carried out among divided Sri Lankan communities by organisations in the UK are also affected by this false allegation. Therefore BSLF decided to protest against Channel-4 News and complained to the Office of Communication, the British Regulatory office (which monitors electronic media) to investigate this incident. Ofcom has requested the organisers to hand over a copy of the signed online petition, which they are planning to lodge against Channel-4 with the controversial video clip in DVD format. At the same time BSLF requests Channel-4 to prove the authenticity of the video or make a public apology.
They are planning to hand over a petition to the British Prime Minister as well.

The full press release of the event issued by the BSLF is as follows.
Online Petition & Demonstration Against Channel 4 News-UK
Channel 4 news in the UK broadcast unauthenticated video footage, accusing Sri Lankan security forces and the government of war crimes. This alleged incident shown on prime-time TV took the whole world by storm and hugely damaged the reputation of Sri Lanka and our brave forces as well as discrediting the reconciliation, reconstruction and rehabilitation programmes in Sri Lanka.
Therefore, we would like to lodge our displeasure for broadcasting a fake video clip (most probably provided by a pro Tamil Tiger organisation) and request Channel 4 TV to make a public apology OR authenticate the video.
Therefore we kindly request you all to click on the following link and sign the attached petition. Please forward this email around the globe among your family and friends and try to get as many signatures as possible before the 5th September (Saturday) by 09.00am UK time.
