Police powers of the Southern Province will be taken over by him, said Mr. Muthuhettigama while addressing the media this morning (Sept. 19). He added that this step had to be resorted to, to rid the police of the existing abuse, corruption and misdeeds. He added that that he respects only the President and not the Inspector General of Police.

Police powers for Provincial Councils have been a perennial thorn in the flesh for most politicians. Recently, when the Eastern Province too had hinted that it was to seek police powers for the council, there was stiff opposition against such a move. If the same powers are granted to the Southern Provincial Council on the behest of Mr. Muthuhettigama, it would open the doors wide for other PCs too to demand the same, sources not in favour of the granting of police powers to the PCs told Adaderana.

The police yesterday moved in swiftly after a major clash erupted at Udugama between two UPFA candidates contesting the Galle District. The police said that it was the first major clash since parties handed over nominations two weeks ago.
Additional police personnel were called in after supporters of Sajin Vas Gunawardene and Nishantha Muthuhettigama clashed causing extensive damage to their political offices. Police said that personnel had to be brought from Hiniduma, Neluwa and Yakkalamulla as the local police could not have handled the situation on its own.


Supporters of Gunawardena accused Muthuhettigama’s men of abducting four persons, while they in turn have been accused of using several vehicles sans registration plates.
Political sources said that there could be further problems if candidates bring outsiders to campaign in the area. The situation had been brought to the notice of the SLFP leadership for action to prevent escalation of clashes between ruling party candidates.
