Was the war won by the Army? Is it fair to say the war was won because of Mahinda Rajapakse? Did he go ahead of the Forces and direct the war operations ? Like King Dutugemunu, did he face Prabhakaran in face to face combat? Is what is happening now right; boosting the ego of the great King, and downplaying the Forces? Why isn’t the credit for war victory given to the Forces who risked and sacrificed their lives in the process? One Officer of the Army has been pushed out from the Army. Another has been pushed to the sidelines. Why such inordinate greed?

Following the speech made by Chief defense of staff, and former Army chief, Gen. Sarath Fonseka’s speech made at the Army grounds at the 60th anniversary celebrations of the Army, on the occasion of conferring honor on him , the Govt. through its Ministers started attacking him.

UNP and Opposition leader speaking at a public rally at Habarakada, Homagama made the above enunciations while criticizing the actions of the Govt., adding that the great King is greedy for power; greedy for wealth; greedy for war victory credit. He challenged the President to tell openly that the credit for victory belongs to the Army Chief and the Forces. Why is he not telling this directly and openly? he asked.

What is the wrong Gen. Fonseka has committed by seeking to contest the Presidential elections? The speech made by Gen. Fonseka at the Army headquarters in Colombo at the 60th anniversary Army celebrations was totally blacked out. The media was instructed not to publish it by the Presidential Secretariat. Gen. Fonseka told in his speech, the public has a right to information and learn of the facts. This news blackout forcibly imposed by the Govt. may not have an impact on the General, but certainly is a grave blow to media freedom.

Many Army Officers have questioned from me ‘if General Sarath Fonseka can be degraded like this, how will we be?’

This is the first time in SL ‘s history, as many as seven Ministers got together and politically ‘pummeled’ an Army Chief. How can discipline be maintained in the Army in such circumstances? Ranil questioned.

When the discipline is destroyed, how can the Army advance in its operations? When there is a breakdown in discipline, how can orders be given by the superiors? If there is a Mahinda Rajapakse, Basil Rajapakse, Gotabaya Rajapakse regiment within the Army, what will be the final outcome? Wont this be most detrimental to the country? We will not under our Govt. allow any such political groups within the Security Establishments, under any circumstance.

The President Rajapakse triggered this issue on purpose and wantonly. If I am wrong, the President must take action against all those seven Govt. Ministers as a step taken to protect the Discipline in the country and among the Forces.

IF Gen. Fonseka or any other has done a wrong, legal action can be instituted. The President who makes loud announcements that he is most concerned about the safety of the members of the Forces and of those in the Police is instead, employing his henchmen to denigrate and attack the Forces and the Army Chief himself.

Was it the Army who won the war? or was it the Rajapakse family ? These questions are raging now .Minister Mervyn Silva and Govt. say, the war was won not by the Forces, but by Mahinda Rajapakse, Gotabaya Rajapakse and Basil Rajapakse. This is to create a cardboard imitation of King Dutugemunu’s image, Ranil asserted.
