The UNP Leader should forthwith propose to field a candidate from the party since no election in the party’s history were there elections without a candidate from the UNP, UNP MP Johnston Fernando said.

Fernando lashing out at Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe said tomorrow’s party convention held today will be a crucial and decisive one.

“There are enough efficient members in the party to face the Presidential Election.

Why is the UNP Leader hesitating to handover the leadership as done in the past?” Fernando asked.

Addressing a press conference, Fernando said that S.B. Dissanayake has made a public statement saying that he is prepared to accept the challenge to contest the election. “Not only S.B. but there are several who can contest from the UNP,” he said.

“When there is no democracy in the party how can he establish democracy in the country,” he queried.

Fernando said there is information that certain elements are instructed to pelt stones and hoot when S.B. Dissanayake speaks at the UNP convention today.

Asked whether he is joining the Government, Fernando said he has no such intention.

Former CMC Deputy Mayor Azath Sally said the UNP leadership had no plan at all to look after the Muslims.

UNP rebels demand SB or Sajith as presidential candidate,
not Sarath

There were enough heavyweights within the United National Party to contest the forthcoming presidential election and there was ample time to field one of them, UNP Kurunegala District Parliamentarian Johnston Fernando told the media yesterday in Colombo.

Ranil Wickremesinghe knew that he could not win an election, Fernando said. "Bringing in General Sarath Fonseka by sacrificing the party symbol to safeguard his position was a situation similar to making Gamini Dissanayake the presidential candidate in 1994," he said.

UNP Deputy leader, S. B. Dissanayake and UNP Assistant Leader Sajith Premadasa were among eligible candidates. If they were given the opportunity they would contest the election, Fernando said.

"We earnestly request Wickremesinghe to stop talking about democracy and abolishing the executive presidency at this juncture and to restore the UNP’s internal democracy, Fernando said.

He said he was aware of plots being hatched against him because the majority of those at Sirikotha were with him. He said he had reliable information that there was a conspiracy to boo and stone him and former Mayor Azath Salley at today’s (December 5) UNP Convention. Surprisingly, Wickremesinghe, who did not like to see anyone else’s name on the agenda, had permitted SB to speak. "We also have information that if SB changes his stance on Fonseka, he will be attacked by the goons from Matara," he added.

Fernando said he had not yet decided whether to attend the convention or not.

Former UNP Mayor Azath Salley said that he vehemently opposed Sarath Fonseka’s candidacy because he could not work with a person who had been critical of the rights of minorities.

Salley said that Wickremesinghe was the only political leader who was against the progress of Muslims other than Cader from Kandy. "That’s why Cader said at the Executive Committee meeting, he would take Fonseka on his shoulders to Kandy, regardless of his statements against minorities," Salley said.

Johnston insists UNPer should contest poll

UNP Parliamentarian Johnston Fernando yesterday called on the party leadership to change its stance on the common candidate and pave the way for a UNPer to contest the upcoming presidential election.

Mr. Fernando told a news conference that it was not late for the party to change its decision as there were a few more days to file nominations.

He charged the party leadership had made an inappropriate decision to allow an outsider to contest the election. “The elephant symbol of the party will not appear on the ballot paper for the first time in this election,” he said adding that the party should have decided to field an alternate candidate for the presidency rather than supporting an outsider as a common candidate.

Mr. Fernando said some members of the party were engaged in a mud slinging against him using web sites. “It is unfair to treat me in such a manner as I have been a loyal member of the party defending the party leadership whenever there was a struggle for a change,” he said.

Referring to a question raised by a journalist as to whether he and his colleague - sacked UNP working committee member Asath Sally - who joined him at the news conference, would crossover to the government, Mr. Fernando said that was not relevant at the moment. “What matters is the decision which the party made and not our crossovers,” he said.

Mr. Sally said he went against the party decision to support General Sarath Fonseka as he had made some negative remarks on the minorities. “Minorities have no place in the party as they have been silenced and sidelined from time to time,” he charged.

He said he was happy about his expulsion from the working committee after making a public announcement on the stand he had taken at the working committee meeting.

UNP MP Johnston Fernando says the collapse of the party can be clearly seen by naming Sarath Fonseka as the common candidate for the presidential election.

UNP parliamentarian Johnston Fernando says Mr. Ranil Wickremasinghe has shown his political inability by naming Sarath Fonseka for the Presidential election. He points out that Sarath Fonseka has become a victim of Mr. Wickremasinghe who is desperate to protect his post. Mr. Fernando says MPs like him who always loved the party tried to move forward by correcting Mr. Wickremasinghe’s shortcomings. Speaking at a media briefing held in Colombo this evening, the UNP MP said that his party should have named a candidate for the presidential election. Mr. Fernando says for that reason Mr. Ranil Wickremasinghe should have given the leadership to a popular member of the party. He points out that approving Sarath Fonseka as the common candidate at the party’s working committee the UNP has accepted that it cannot win the upcoming presidential election. Mr. Asad Sally who spoke against this was removed from the acting committee of the party. MP Johnston Fernando says he will also have to face a similar experience in the future.
