The Central Bank of Sri Lanka issued a commemorative note in the denomination of Rupees 1000 to mark the ushering of peace and prosperity to Sri Lanka, on 17th November 2009. The obverse depicts the image of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, which is to the right of the note. A map of Sri Lanka with the rising sun in the background and a “Punkalasa” with ears of paddy at center left. The valiant contribution made by armed forces is the theme on the reverse of the note. The design at the center depicts the hoisting of the national flag by members of the security forces. Images of the Mavil Aru annicut and Thoppigala rock (Baron’s Cap) that were turning points of humanitarian operations of the security forces appear in the background.
When we closely look at the hoisting of the national flag by members of the security forces, we have to flashback our memories. Is it really depicting the hoisting of the national flag by the security forces of Sri Lanka ?

Yes, but this is not a genuine design. Sarath Nanda Silva, PC was the former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka expressed this view in a TV program ( ‘78 Rata karawana liyawilla, Sirasa TV – 2009/12/23). As per his statement, this is a copy of Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima.
    ww2_iwo_jima_flag_raising1.jpg

Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima is a historic photograph taken on February 23, 1945, by Joe Rosenthal. It depicts five United States Marines and a U.S. Navy corpsman raising the flag of the United States atop Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima in World War II.

The photograph was extremely popular, being reprinted in thousands of publications.
Later, it became the only photograph to win the Pulitzer Prize for Photography in the same year as its publication, and came to be regarded in the United States as one of the most significant and recognizable images of the war, and possibly the most reproduced photograph of all time. this is also a reproduced photo of Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima but published as a own or genuine creation of central bank of Sri lanka.
