Elections Commissioner has instructed the Rupavahini Corporation to ban the telecast of five TV programmes namely Yakshawesaya, Edagena Nema, Kimbul Kandulu, Pravurthi Pasubima and Vinivida with immediate effect.
The Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake has toughened his stand on the state media by directing the Chairman of Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation (SLRC) to ban the five programmes.
The representatives of the political parties, who met Mr. Dissanayake recently, had raised concerns about the telecast of these programmes violating all forms of journalistic ethics. They had complained out that there is injustice caused to the opposition through these programmes.
Accordingly, the Elections Commissioner has written to SLRC Chairman Ariyaratne Athugala saying that these programmes are in contravention of Article 104(5) (A) of the Constitution.
