You need a Steam Game (original/Demo) To activate Friends. . .
Just Snoop around for a Demo Release of a Steam game and Download that Thru a Beta Key and Do the Rest as it is
or Get Friends to add you it works

SIRUS3001 is telling the truth..U'll need a Original STEAM enabled game to add or play through their servers..Allthough u still can play with another games demo's (like for MW2)..But won't be working forever, since STEAM regular updates itself ..And it is/will be dangerous for ur account (If u hav a valid original account)!..U can multiplay Non-Steam version of MW2 on private servers, like garena or hamachi!...Im using all three of them!.. No hi pings, max will be around 300-350 ping ratio and best part is No lagg (privates servers such as these will require atleast 1 mbps down to host/and 256 up)!! Try them!
