What is being Sri Lankan all about? Why is it a “trend” and not something “in the blood”? Why are we all hyped out about showing we’re Sri Lankans when we live in somebody else’s home zone? If we are proud to be Sri Lankans, why is speaking in Sinhalese (our mother tongue) named “godè” (not “classy”). Aren’t we being hypocrites? To…ourselves??

The Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka is a tiny island. No, it is NOT a part of India. It is multi-cultural, multi-national, multi-everything. In the core, it is a Sinhala Buddhist country (check your history if you want to double check). I’ve heard people asking why, if it is multi-everything, that only a Sinhalese has always being the Executive President. Well, the majority in the country are Sinhalese. The President, is he/she who receives the most number of votes. Put two and two together.

It is something that I’ve never been able to comprehend. How people criticize and comment adversely to everything that goes wrong here at home and leave. No, that’s not what I can’t comprehend. Once they leave, they can’t wait to come back. Seriously, hasn’t it ever got you thinking? And once they get there, they promote their identity as Sri Lankans. Ever heard of people saying “The country is not in a good situation. Might as well get out while you can.” Really? Which country is in a good situation? USA? Economic depression. Hurricanes. Cyclones. Australia? Forest fires, heat waves. India? Congestion. Singapore? Too many laws?!? Canada? Weather that freezes your butt off all year round. So, where is this other place that’s perfect?

It isn’t about what religion we follow/believe in. Nor is it about what race we belong to. If we live under this flag, if we consider this our home, if we consider this our territory then shouldn’t we have the decency to protect it? By protecting, I don’t mean security. I mean its honour. Its glory. Its dignity. Because we are born here, bred here, educated here, live our lives here, share our values and our culture when we go out, we die here, we perish here. What good is it to blame? What good does it make when we go on complaining about what we don’t have when we don’t even appreciate what we do have.

To hell with who’s President and what Government is in power. They just provide us with the cash and resources to build this place up. Isn’t it we who spread the word?? Isn’t it we who should be proud of being Sri Lankans? Aren’t we all supposed to be in this together? Which place on the planet is perfect? Where on the planet do you find Governments or people who are not corrupt? Where do you find countries with perfect laws and regulations? Why do we all see the undone stuff and not pay gratitude to everything that’s done? Just because we’re the majority it doesn’t mean we rule. It means there are more of us than the rest. It means we can get them all together and make this happen. Make it all happen. Don’t we all have at least one friend who’s not Sinhalese? Who’s not a Buddhist? Does that difference even matter in your friendships? Then why let it affect us in society?

We are the future here. We should get our heads wrapped around what it means to be Sri Lankans. What it means to be human beings. We should learn about each other. We must learn about ourselves.
…are we Sri Lankans? Really?
