The key figure behind the take
over of the Tigo
telecommunications company by
Etisalat from the United Arab
Emirates is Basil Rajapaksa, it is
learnt.
Etisalat was officially launched in
Sri Lanka on the 25th.
Although former Director General
of the Telecommunications
Regulatory Commission,
Priyantha Kariyapperuma
objected to Etisalat, the deal had
been finalized soon after the
new director general, Anusha
Pelpita took over the
Commission.
In order to get the necessary
approval for the company to
launch in Sri Lanka, Etisalat it is
learnt had contributed large
sums of money to the
President ’s and Basil’s election
campaigns.
