EVGA Shows GeForce GTX 480, 470 Boxes Too

EVGA Shows GeForce GTX 480, 470 Boxes Too

Now we present another card maker's interpretation of what the boxes should look like.
Tom's reader Gin Fushicho pointed us toward EVGA's own box designs for the very same Nvidia GPUs with the same memory configuration. Check them out below.

Official Box Art for Palit's GeForce GTX 480, 470

Official Box Art for Palit's GeForce GTX 480, 470

While we don't yet have Nvidia's upcoming GF100-based video cards to show you just yet, we have received some of the first box art for retail GeForce GTX 470 and GTX 480 that you'll see in stores from Palit.
Here's the front of the box for the GeForce GTX 480 with confirmation of its 1536MB of GDDR5 configuration.

And here's the art for the GeForce GTX 470 with 1280MB of GDDR5.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480 Video Card

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480 Video Card

The gang over at Tweakers.net has posted up several pictures of an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480 reference designed video card that are worth taking a look at today. With the GPU cooler removed you get a clear look at the PCB and how the card is laid out. The site blocked some of the components on the card, but you can still see the bits and pieces you want to see. Notice that the card uses both 6-pin and 8-pin PCI Express power connectors.

In the pictures, the GF100-chip to see that, consistent with previous speculation, an area of over 500mm2 seems to have. Moreover, the GPU has a A2 revision, though it is known that a revision is A3. There are also 12 memory chips of 128MB each likely to see what is good for 1.5 GB of memory. There are also 12 memory chips of 128MB each likely to see what is good for 1.5 GB of memory. An 8-pin-and-a 6pin pci-e connector with the GPU of puncture. An 8-pin-and-a 6pin pci-e connector with the gpu or puncture. Two SLI connectors make it possible for the video card in three-way SLI setups to use the card and further equipped with two DVI connectors and a mini-HDMI connector.

We were tipped off by a reader to the sale of an XFX branded Nvidia GTX 480 GPU at SabrePC online retailer. The first things that caught our eye were the fact that this particular card's specifications listed it as a 2GB card.

The only problem with that fact is that the top-end Fermi chip employs a 384-bit bus, while the GTX 470 employs a 320-bit bus, an identical configuration to the G80 GPU and its two launch products, GeForce 8800GTX and 8800GTS. As such, neither GTX 470 nor GTX 480 cannot facilitate a 2GB quantity of memory. It has to be either 1920MB or 2304MB in order to jive with this requirement. Either the distributor is dead wrong, or the retailer has not been informed of the correct specifications.

Either way, this is a fishy looking listing. Not to mention the price. SabrePC lists the price of this card at a hefty $699 USD with a "discount" of $20 to $679. What a steal. Currently, we nor anybody else really know the pricing of such a card... given that nVidia hasn't finalized the prices. We know that the prices will be firmed this week, as the production batch of boards with the changed PCB and heatsink will leave Flextronics and head to nVidia AIB's in order for the March 15th sampling deadline and the subsequent launch on Saturday, March 27th with the reviews and availability being released on the 29th.

This whole pre-order story looks like one of the distributors has indicated to their resellers like Sabre PC that they will be sold for $700, then things might not look so bright for those looking to get their paws on a GTX 480 card. If the price of $699 stands, that will confirm that the yields of the parts are in dire straits indeed.

If you're interested in checking out that listing, if it still exists, check out this link.

We've also provided a screen shot in the likely event that it will get pulled.

new specifications and details about the Geforce GTX 480 and GTX470 is out from semiaccurate.com as below: There are two cards, the GTX480 having the full complement of 512 shaders, and the GTX470 with only 448 shaders . The clocks for the GTX480 are either 600MHz or 625MHz for the low or half clock, and double that, 1200MHz or 1250MHz for the high or hot clock. Nvidia was aiming for 750/1500MHz last spring, so this is a huge miss. This speed is the first point the sources conflict on, and it could go either way, since both sources were adamant about theirs being the correct final clock.
On the GTX470 side, there are 448 shaders, and the clocks are set at 625MHz and 1250MHz in both cases. If the GTX480 is really at 600Mhz and 1200MHz, and the GTX470 is slightly faster, it should really make you wonder about the thermals of the chip.
Basically Nvidia has to crank the voltages beyond what it wanted to keep borderline transistors from flaking out. The problem is that this creates heat, and a lot of heat. Both of our sources said that their cards were smoking hot. One said they measured it at 70C at idle on the 2D clock.

Now that you know the raw clocks, how does it perform? It is a mixed bag, but basically the cards are much below Nvidia's original expectations publicly stated as 60 percent faster than Cypress. The numbers that SemiAccurate were told span a variety of current games, all running at very high resolutions..

The GTX480 with 512 shaders running at full speed, 600Mhz or 625MHz depending on which source, ran on average 5 percent faster than a Cypress HD5870, plus or minus a little bit. The sources were not allowed to test the GTX470, which is likely an admission that it will be slower than the Cypress HD5870.
There is one bright spot, and it is a very bright spot indeed. No, not the thermal cap of the chip, but the tessellation performance in Heaven."
