A Catholic Church in Sri Lanka has been attacked, with suspicions falling on Buddhist extremists.

The church of Our Lady Rosa Mystica in Crooswatta was attacked by a mob of about a thousand people last Sunday.

According to witnesses, the attackers stormed the building, armed with sticks, swords and stones.

The angry mob destroyed statues and the church altar before turning their anger on the parish priest, who they attacked before setting his car on fire.

The priest, Father Jude Lakshman, of Our Lady Rosa Mystica in Crooswatta, was generally unhurt but said his parishoners were still inside the building after the 7 o'clock Mass.

He said the mob of about a thousand people stormed the church before smashing "everything."

The church is built near a Buddhist monastery whose followers were always against the construction of the Catholic church, which was started about four years ago.

Construction had to stop when Buddhist extremists targeted the church and launched legal action against its construction.

The Supreme Court gave permission for the building work to continue and Our Lady Rosa Mystica was completed in 2008.

Some soldiers from a nearby air force camp in Ekala are now patrolling the area to guarantee security.

Police have arrested 11 suspects and are investigating extremist Buddhist groups that have attacked the church in the past.
