The President has ordered the IGP to inquire and report to him if there were any businessmen, who had fled the country following alleged financial fraud, had given funds to Wimal Weerawansa, Lanka News Web reliably learns.
The president had ordered the inquiry following information received by him to the effect.
The President it is learnt had been disturbed after hearing that the key figure in the VAT fraud, Kamil Kuthubdeen, had given Rs. 50 million to Wimal’s election campaign. Kuthubdeen, who is currently residing in Dubai, had sent the monies through a businessman friend.
Kuthubdeen and his businessman friend had met one of Wimal’s close confidants, Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission, Udaya Sri Kariyawasam in Singapore recently. Kuthubdeen’s friend had then arrived in Sri Lanka following a telephone conversation with Wimal.
After arriving in Sri Lanka, Kuthubdeen’s friend had given Rs. 10 million to Deputy Tourism Minister Faizer Mustapha.
However, the President has received information that apart from Kuthubdeen,
several other businessmen who have allegedly earned millions through ndecent means had given funds to Wimal’s campaign. The President has also diverted his attention towards the millionaire businessmen who have funded Wimal
through the Mawbima Lanka organization. Wimal’s political office in Pannipitiya had been declared open by businessman Sumal Perera.
