The budget for the UK Pavilion was approximately £25m, with £2.5m provided by private sector sponsors and the rest by the UK Government.[70] The pavilion is built with thousands of translucent rods that produce effects when the wind blows and has been called the "Seed Cathedral" and nicknamed the "Dandelion

    United States
The 60,000 sq. foot (5574 sq. meter) United States pavilion, constructed largely from glass and steel, was designed by Canadian architect Clive Grout.[71] The American pavilion's theme is "Rising to the Challenge."[42]

Four performance spaces within the pavilion will be used for multimedia and live shows.[71] BRC Imagination Arts, which is headquartered in Burbank, California, created a show about an American girl who builds an oasis on what was a vacant city lot, which will showcase American ingenuity.[71] The exterior of the pavilion has been criticized as extremely unimaginative, resembling an ordinary office building.[72] Artists scheduled to perform during the opening week of Expo 2010 include the Philadelphia Orchestra, Dee Dee Bridgewater, and Herbie Hancock.[71] Approximately 160 Chinese-speaking American college students will staff the pavilion.[71]

In mid-2009, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton tapped Jose H. Villarreal, a lawyer and Democratic Party fundraiser from San Antonio, Texas, to raise the estimated $61 million needed to construct and staff the American pavilion.[71] American laws limit the amount of public money for world fairs.[71] The United States had previously failed to attend Expo 2000 in Hanover, Germany, and only opened a small pavilion during Expo 2005.[71] As of March 2010, most of the funding for the Shanghai pavilion had been raised from 34 corporate sponsors.[71]

A separate building adjacent to the pavilion houses a Pizza Hut and Kentucky Fried Chicken.[71] Several U.S. government corporations have their own stand-alone pavilions in other areas of the Expo.[71]

President Hu Jintao visited the U.S. Pavilion. Secretary of States Hillary Clinton will visit in May. Actress Halle Berry visited in April.
