A Sri Lankan delegation left for Brussels late last night in an attempt to renegotiate the GSP+ trade benefits and discussions are scheduled to be held on May 20, Foreign Ministry sources told Daily Mirror online.
The Sri Lankan delegation consists of Foreign Secretary Romesh Jayasingha, Treasury Secretary P.B. Jayasundara, Justice Ministry Secretary Suhada Gamlath and Attorney General Mohan Peiris.
The visit is the second to take place in months after the same delegation had visited Brussels in March this year to hold key discussions with the European Union in an attempt to regain the GSP+ which is facing suspension since August this year.
During their visit the Sri Lankan delegation met with European Commission Trade Commissioner Mr. Karel De Gucht which was followed by an in-depth and substantive discussion on GSP+ related concerns with the officials handling Trade and External Relations matters in the European Commission.
In further discussions, the Sri Lanka delegation and the EC officials also focused on identifying the specific areas that need to be addressed for Sri Lanka to obtain the trade concessions and the delegation further added that Sri Lanka envisages a methodology of work, that would best permit the issues to be addressed in a purposeful manner.
