Google announced last week that they are about to release an encrypted version of their search. Although they haven't yet released any details, presumably this will use https (the SSL protocol) to encrypt the information that is sent between your computer and the Google servers when you perform a search. This could help prevent eavesdropping on your search keywords and results, and some have speculated that it might cause other sites, such as social networking sites, to use encryption more extensively to protect users' privacy.
