Also, there are many restrictions for what the police does. They cannot take any adult female under custody without a WPC. So this arresting couples holding hands is BS. They will need buses not jeeps. They usually take teenagers below 18yrs because that gives them the excuse to hold them till parents come. What is wrong with that?

There is no any wrong if they arrest under 18s. all of us should accept and help it. because we need to protect our culture. but machan, you have only good vision about SL police.

I spoke with one police officer who was involved in similar raids. He said that they cannot take adults into custody unless they were having “Indecent behavior” (ex- doing some sexual activity in public). Even most of these couples, they tend to “let go” at the site after checking their identity etc. They almost never arrest anybody doing a job (specially gov. jobs). This accusation of arresting “couples holding hands” is simply BS. Even the main article doesn’t claim something so ridiculous.

It’s totally different when underage ones are caught. The police can keep them in their custody (even if one person is >18) till parents arrive. If one person is >18yrs, child abuse laws come into play and that person can be sent to jail for many years. BUT THE POLICE ONLY RELEASE THEM WITH A WARNING. So, clearly, police under-use their power.

As I said, if the implementation of law is done properly, a 18 yrs old kissing a 15yrs old should be sent to jail for several years. BUT THIS DOESN’T HAPPEN.

When teenage pregnancies are reported from hospitals, what does the police do? Arrest the husband (who is usually not legally married) and put him in jail? NO. They just go to the houses, meet the two families and threaten to arrest the “husband” unless he marries the girl properly when she is of age. But our law books say that supporting child abuse is a crime and no “negotiations outside the court” should be attempted. The police ignore this law for the benefit of the majority (specially the unborn child).

So, following the law to the letter is not the answer always. The hilarious thing is people never say good about the police when they do things like that, but scolds them as if they’re some fiends set out to destroy “true love”. The police cannot please everybody.
