I have the slt adsl xcite package(1Mbps down, 256kbps up) it worked great till last Monday and the download speed dramatically dropped down. My average download speed was 85 - 110 kbps with apps. like torrent and IDM(sometimes higher), but now its 5 - 20 kbps. I complained about 5 or 6 times. Nothing happened still down. The thing is I can't even browse through web pages. It takes about 70 - 90 seconds to load a web page. I can't even get speedtest.net to work some kind of error, but when used other means to connect to internet (like through my 3G phone via PC Suite) they all work fine.
So after a lot of complains the slt came up with a solution to me. They said that there is an issue with the xcite package which was that some users had used xcite packages in Communications (small inet cafes). So now they have to limit the download speed. So what do I care. I'm not one of them. I download aroud 60 - 70 GBs a month but I'm a home user and I download movies and TV series for personal entertainment not as a business. Now they say they are introducing two new packages

    1. 1Mbps down, 256kbps up but free usage up to 5GB and 50 cents for another extra 1MB or KB (not sure) for 29GBs after that Rs1 for MB or KB (not sure). Rental Rs.2000 + vat per month.

    2. and another for a rental of Rs.5000 per month (not the Office package)

Also they said if I wish to download more I should switch to the 2nd package.

The only unlimited broadband package I could find other than SLT ADSL is Lanka Bell. Lanka Bell offers the same 1Mbps down, 256kbps up package for a monthly rental of Rs. 3000 + VAT and a onetime fee of Rs.3360. They guaranteed that I'll get a average download speed of 150 - 170kbps.

(1). I need to know whether it is worth to transfer from SLT to Lanka Bell???
(2). If anyone using Lanka Bell broadband, pleas give an insight to their download speed and their connection stability

Please state your ideas/view on the matter.

Just my case since last monday.

It's been a nightmare for downloads and I do download a lot. Movies, TV shows, Softwares, Games, Educational Material + I use the internet for my work.

Been calling in and out to SLT Support and all I got from them is, "This is a common issue Sir, we're looking into it.

"Were migrating servers sir, it should be fixed soon."

I usually download mostly from 12am to 8am because I get peak speeds at those times and right now my peak is at just 20kbps - 30kbps for downloads.

FTP downloads don't even go half way before timing out. IDM, etc.

If what you said is true about SLT trying to create new packages and charge us by the MB. That sucks. Paying 3000+ Bucks which is way too much for a 1MB connection in the first place.

How did your transition to Lanka Bell 1MB Unlimited Package go?

I'd like to keep it as a option if this doesn't get fixed soon. Would I have to draw a new phone line to my home if so?

Thanks for the info, would like to hear how your internet plan goes now, since we've both been having the exact same problem.

Been a SLT user for 4 years now and this is what we get. Loyalty. Oh well...

Just let me know if Lanka Bell is worth moving on to. Lot of work and downloads pending due to this little scenario with Telecom.

    Cheers,

My connection is still down so today I called SLT to get info on disconnecting the ADSL connection and the operator gave me the info and asked Y? So I told the story and she told that she is not aware of the two new packages (before that another operator told that he is not allowed to say till the official release).

But I came to know about it directly through the Maradana telecom. I didn't even ask them about a new package they contacted me and informed about the packages.

So today the operator told me that there has been some word that the SLT is going to restore the speed soon on the xcite package. I asked them when I will get a confirmation on that. She told that it'll take about a week before I know for sure.

Anyway I decided to give Lanka Bell a try. So today I went to Lanka Bell and registered for a new connection for Rs. 3360/=. It is WiMax so don't have to draw a new phone line. They told me that they'll send a team on next Tuesday to check for signals and set the connection.

So I'm going to keep the SLT ADSL till Lanka Bell establish a connection here. I'm really hoping that this Lanka Bell connection works for me.

    Hey, Thanks Don.

I called a guy at SLT today. 2 guys actually and both of them had no idea about the new package scenario.

All they said was they're migrating/fixing servers or something and that the speed will be back up within a few days.

I honestly wish they would just tell us what the hell is going on without wasting our time, money and of course bandwidth. 7 days off downloads has been a major set back in my dailies.

Downloads even at 12 in the night or 4 in the morning only give around 2 - 15kbps (IDM) before timing out. Hotfile, Rapid, Fileshare etc. The rest of the day, they don't even start. It's like FTP has been mega nerfed.

And I couldn't help but notice that since this slowdown started my ip has "Always" been in the 124.43.19.xxx range.

It's like they've moved us into a limited bandwidth + ultra limited download user group or something

Lanka Bell seems like a promising option but the wireless thing is a bit of a off point for me cause it causes major ping issues in online games, 1 reason I like a cable connection.

Let's see where SLT goes with this crap. Think I'd give them till monday.

Thanks for your info man. Keep us posted.

    Cheers.
