London, England (CNN) -- Religious leaders in Britain on Friday hit back at claims by leading physicist Stephen Hawking that God had no role in the creation of the universe.
In his new book "The Grand Design," Britain's most famous scientist says that given the existence of gravity, "the universe can and will create itself from nothing," according to an excerpt published in The Times of London.
"Spontaneous creation is the reason why there is something rather than nothing, why the universe exists, why we exist," he wrote.

Creation is a great myth.It has only religious value. If some one thinks God is powerful, & extreme intelligent creature, we should not be afraid to suspect him.He understands the human mind & human nature.
Evolution is universal.Evolution is solar powered.Billions of stars in the space will testify for us.Solar powered evolution can create life on planets.I feel there are billions of planets which have life.
Our creator is evolution powered by solar power.
Creation is a very primitive idea.No one should take it for granted.Concept of the God is hilarious.

An extrasolar planet, or exoplanet, is a planet outside the Solar System. As of 27 August 2010, astronomers have announced confirmed detections of 490 such planets.[1] The vast majority have been detected through radial velocity observations and other indirect methods rather than actual imaging.[1] Most are giant planets thought to resemble Jupiter; this partly reflects a sampling bias in that more massive planets are easier to observe with current technology. Several relatively lightweight exoplanets, only a few times more massive than Earth, have also been detected and projections suggest that these will eventually be found to outnumber giant planets.[2][3] It is now known that a substantial fraction of stars have planets, including at least around 10% of sun-like stars. (The true proportion may be much higher.)[4] It follows that billions of exoplanets must exist in our own galaxy alone. There also exist planets that orbit brown dwarfs and free floating planets that do not orbit any parent body at all, though as a matter of definition it is unclear if either of these should be referred to by the term "planet."
Extrasolar planets became an object of
scientific investigation in the nineteenth century. Many astronomers supposed that they existed, but there was no way of knowing how common they were or how similar they might be to the planets of our solar system. The first confirmed detection was made in 1992, with the discovery of several terrestrial-mass planets orbiting the pulsar PSR B1257+12.[5] The first confirmed detection of an exoplanet orbiting a main-sequence star was made in 1995, when a giant planet, 51 Pegasi b, was found in a four-day orbit around the nearby G-type star 51 Pegasi. The frequency of detections has tended to increase on an annual basis since then.[1]
The discovery of extrasolar planets has intensified interest in the possibility of extraterrestrial life.[6] As of April 2010[update], Gliese 581 d, fourth planet of the red dwarf star Gliese 581, appears to be the best known example of a possibly terrestrial exoplanet orbiting within the habitable zone that surrounds its star. Although initial observations placed the planet outside that zone, additional measurements suggest it may reside within.[

When Hawkin say "Spontaneous creation", It does not refer to any supernatural author (God). what he says is that Universe just came in to existence without any supernatural involvement.

Hawking says that M-theory, a form of string theory, will achieve

God did not create the universe, the man who is arguably Britain's most famous living scientist says in a forthcoming book.
In the new work, The Grand Design, Professor Stephen Hawking argues that the Big Bang, rather than occurring following the intervention of a divine being, was inevitable due to the law of gravity.
In his 1988 book, A Brief History of Time, Hawking had seemed to accept the role of God in the creation of the universe. But in the new text, co-written with American physicist Leonard Mlodinow, he said new theories showed a creator is "not necessary".
The Grand Design, an extract of which appears in the Times today, sets out to contest Sir Isaac Newton's belief that the universe must have been designed by God as it could not have been created out of chaos.
"Because there is a law such as gravity, the universe can and will create itself from nothing," he writes. "Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the universe exists, why we exist.
"It is not necessary to invoke God to light the blue touch paper and set the universe going."
In the forthcoming book, published on 9 September, Hawking says that M-theory, a form of string theory, will achieve this goal: "M-theory is the unified theory Einstein was hoping to find," he theorises.
"The fact that we human beings – who are ourselves mere collections of fundamental particles of nature – have been able to come this close to an understanding of the laws governing us and our universe is a great triumph."
