Which is safer? Credit card or Debit card W.R.T criminals and electronic payment systems etc?

Of course with both cards, if you loose it, a thief may be able to use it until you inform the loss to the bank. What about the card information being stolen to duplicate a card etc? Then one may not know about it.

Well, in a debit card, your bank account is debited immediately. But in a credit card, there need not be any link to your bank account. So does it mean that a criminal who has information of your debit card would be able to access your account electronically and debit funds?

More and more people use debit cards as the government continues to discriminate and tax credit cards.
I was wondering whether to switch to debit cards but have doubts after hearing debit cards may be less safe than credit cards.

What are your thoughts on this ?

    Thanks

    Peradeniya Mal Waththe...
    Safe in terms of what?

Well, I personally prefer a debit card, because:
    1. Its easy to not carry hard cash around
    2. Saves the transaction cost if you were to withdraw the same amount from a ATM
    3. Does not leave you indebted
    4. Gives the same sense of prestige like using a credit card (No one knows what it is just superficially looking at it)

I'm not so sure about the situation in Sri Lanka. But in UK credit card is the safest method to make payments online. Incase something goes wrong it's easy to get it rectified with credit card companies.
