Acting Queensland Premier Paul Lucas says Sri Lanka has not withdrawn their bid for the 2018 Commonwealth Games despite the Gold Coast's only current rival not making a presentation.

Queensland Premier Anna Bligh lead a team of four on Saturday to make their first presentation to delegates from all 71 participating countries and territories of the Commonwealth Games Federation to host the 2018 Games.

Mr Lucas told reporters in Brisbane on Sunday that the Gold Coast's only current rival Sri Lanka declined to make a presentation to the delegates.

But it certainly has not withdrawn its bid and we need to be very, very careful about that," he said.

Whether there's two competitors in the race for the Commonwealth Games bid - us and Sri Lanka - or whether there's 10, one thing I'll tell you is that the Premier will be running and we will be running as hard as we can.

It's very very important, it's a tourism benefit, it's a sporting benefit, and it's a further marketing of the Gold Coast and Queensland.

We could put on a jolly good games in Queensland and Australia and I think people will recognise that."

no idea but it looks like the government has no serious intention to host the games

this was not something that was really possible

the cost is huge ($1 billion ?)

yehh agreed machan! with the world cup hosting next year, and lot of infrastructure getting developed all around the country it is my personal belief that commonwealth games are better off with Aussie hosting them!

well, undertaking something which is as colossal as the commonwealth games is probably beyond our limits, but that doesn't mean its impossible. If we become the host country our country will develop rapidly, tourism will bloom, in short sri lanka will rise from it's dark past...

Yeah man.. We can't bear something like 100 billion Rs. for just a competition.

So it's better to withdraw from it right now than to organize the biggest failure in the history of the competition.

No machan 2018 game bid eka lankawa win karana patak thiyenne

China is looming as an unlikely threat to the Gold Coast's bid for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

And me thiyenne official site eka

If some country would opt to host a mega-sporting event like this, that country or even that certain area has to be devoloped.

Compare Gold Coast city against Hambantota. We have to spend damn amount of money just to devolop Hambantota yet alone hosting the event.

Look at the Gold Coast City and think how practicle is to contend against it.

According to several foreign medias they call hambantota as Blooming city of the region we cant compare now hambantota and gold coat but this event is scheduled to be held in 2018 by 2018 hambantota will be very develop city in the world as considering recent development process in that area that is why they are going to bid :). Nothing is impossible machan. Now things has changed.

Well in my opinion we do not have infrastructure to host a mega event like this even in 2018. We only have 8 more years. The harbor will complete in 2020, the Airport is not even started. We do not have hotel facilities to cater such a crowd. Its good that we do not proceed at this moment. Or else it would be a huge lost like IIFA...
