What is the best thing a Sri Lankan parent can do to their children?

In my opinion, the best thing a SL parent can do to his child is, work hard enough to save for,

1) his child to start a private degree, right after O/Ls itself, as every year's statistics shows that there is a 90% probability that a given child won't make it to a public university, after spending 2 years at the A/L class.

2) save enough for his (parent's) own retirement as well, so that he won't be a burden to his child.

Now we talking about, saving around 1 - 1.5 millions for the child's private degree program and also saving at least Rs. 10 millions for the parent's own retirement, so to earn around Rs. 50,000 per month as interest income, given the today's low interest rates. Or else there should be a family business.

Every child who arrives into this world, has a right of a decent living. But if their parents haven't done the necessary, then the child only gets lost in life and becomes frustrated. But why we have so much dissatisfaction among our youth (tharuna asahanaya), is because most parents, take those above duties for granted, and leave their children to fend for themselves.

So in my opinion, a parent's love is not only about hugging and cuddling but doing exactly what's described above. This is why, those kids who grow up, without the company of their parents who sweat and toil abroad, to earn dollars, euros and riyals are actually better off, compared to most of who had their parents with them throughout.

Any thoughts?

or any parent can just not do what the hell ever your parents did to you..so any kid won't have to end up like you

My parents saved enough to afford me that private university degree, which paved the path for me with many good things, including settling down in Australia ok :D.

Therefore, just because you do not agree with my opinions, please don't fall into the low level of insulting my good parents, which only reflects the abuse you suffered by your father.

I generally don't like people insulting other people's parents, but this one was richly deserved and is sooo true.

Well Have to agree with you except for your point on going to a degree after O/Ls. I too had a good degree in a private university but I am glad that I managed to do my A/Ls. Because the knowledge you gain from that helps you in a great extent.

Oh this is just the other nerd, who said, people with 3As are smarter than people with 3Ss. I smacked him then and there, but looks like he still couldn't recover from the shock .

It is indicative of your low level of intelligence that your vocabulary of insults does not extend beyond 'nerd' and 'bookworm'.:rolleyes:

Hey Nalin, your stupidity is showing! As is your inferiority complex. (you might want to look that up) I doubt an idiot like you would have the slightest idea what that means :lol:

So giving life is all you think a child mostly need? The opportunity to live a decent life is not?

That's why I mentioned in my thread itself, that most parents think that the biggest favour they did to their children is giving birth.

Now try to realize why the elderly homes are packed in SL.
