The massacre of Tamils is just not cricket .Australians for Tamil Rights, a newly formed coalition intends to protest the Sri Lankan cricket team’s visit to Melbourne.
“Why has the Sri Lankan cricket team included a player who is an artillery gunner in the Sri Lankan Army? The Sri Lankan army is being investigated for war crimes by the United Nations” said Sue Bolton, spokesperson for Australians for Tamil Rights.
“Australia has been at the forefront in defending human rights around the world. Australians for Tamil Rights feels that it is time that Australia shows its concern for the hundreds of thousands of Eelam Tamils who have been subjected to inhuman treatment by the Sri Lankan government.”
“The Sri Lankan government uses cricket to promote its image as a decent and sports loving country and spends millions of dollars annually for that purpose. This is to hide the country’s reputation as a big human rights abuser,” she said.
In 2009 the Sri Lankan Army killed more civilians than were killed in all other conflicts combined in that year.
Forty thousand Tamil civilians were killed in the first few months of 2009 and three hundred thousand Tamil civilians were locked in prison camps for 12 months. There were many disappearances of civilians from these camps and many journalists were killed for trying to report on the conflict.
Australians for Tamil Rights along with other humanitarian organisations calls upon the Australian government and the public to show their solidarity with the Tamils in condemning the human rights violations taking place in Sri Lanka by protesting the Sri Lankan cricket team during their match in Melbourne on November 3.

Protest Against Sri Lankan Cricket Team
Sri Lanka: The massacre of Tamils is just not cricket Wednesday 3 November 12PM
Corner Brunton Avenue & Richmond Cricket Ground,
Near the MCG
Australians for Tamil Rights, a newly formed coalition intends to protest the Sri Lankan cricket team’s visit to Melbourne.
The Sri lankan army is being investigated for war crimes by the UN and the Sri Lankan government has refused to allow the UN access to carry out this investigation. In the meantime Sri Lankan cricket team included a player, Ajantha Mendis, who is an artillery gunner in the Sri Lankan Army is visiting melbourne on November 3rd.
In 2009 the Sri Lankan Army killed more civilians than were killed in all other conflicts combined in that year-all of them were Tamil. Forty thousand Tamil civilians were killed within the first few months of 2009 while three hundred thousand Tamil men, women and children were locked in internment/detention/concentration camps run by the Sri lankan military for 12 months. There have been many disappearances of Tamil civilians from these camps and many journalists were killed for trying to report on the conflict. Right now, 26 000 Tamil are still incarcerated in these camps, and access to these camps by local and international humanitarian agencies and independent monitors including the international red cross is severely restricted. The lands of these incarcerated Tamils are also being appropriated by the Sri Lankan government making it difficult for them to return to their own homes.
In September 2010, the President of Sri Lanka was granted greater powers over independent institutions such as elections, police, human rights commissions and the judiciary that is likely to increase the targeting of all citizens who hold views that are counter to the current regime.
Australians for Tamil Rights along with other organisations who advocate for justice and human rights call upon the Australian government and the public to show their solidarity with the Tamils in condemning the human rights violations taking place in Sri Lanka by protesting the Sri Lankan cricket team during their match in Melbourne on November 3.
