sure.. keep a dictionary within your reach and read this ebook http://gyanpedia.in/tft/Resources/books/cheaper.pdf ..I'm reading it at the moment :P
keep in mind that this story tells about middle and upper middle class life in the USA in the 1900-1920s. So some of the language and words used in there are no longer used now.
Its a very nice story with quite simple English so it shouldn't be too hard to read it.

"Whistles and Shaving Bristles" what is the direct meaning of this..
Whistles and bristles is not matching..

I don't exactly know :P but I think it's got something to do with dad's efficiency thing..whistle is an obvious reference to the family call and shaving bristles might be a pun at how sometimes he screwed up trying to implement efficiency on everything, like shaving his beards

bear in mind means keep in mind da?

    yes

    in my garden
whistle means shrill sound made by lips
bristles means stiff pieces of hair or wire in a brush
shaving means thin strip of wood

It may be "sound of thin stiff pieces of hair or wire in a brush" but may be wrong..

might take you months to finish it if you looked up every single word that you don't know the meaning of, in a dictionary..so kind of ignore the words you can go on reading without..and stop and search for the meanings of the words that are really necessary for the understanding of the story :P

whoa! ok, you're taking the wrong meaning here.
first thing, that’s the Chapter Name you're reading. Dont try to analyze meanings of names.
Next, Whistle also means 'නලාව'. Thats the meaning used here.
    Shaving means 'රැවුල/ම්යිල් බෑම'. ;)
Shaving bristles means the shaving brush. The brush used to apply the shaving cream.
