keep in mind that this story tells about middle and upper middle class life in the USA in the 1900-1920s. So some of the language and words used in there are no longer used now.
Its a very nice story with quite simple English so it shouldn't be too hard to read it.

I don't exactly know but I think it's got something to do with dad's efficiency thing..whistle is an obvious reference to the family call and shaving bristles might be a pun at how sometimes he screwed up trying to implement efficiency on everything, like shaving his beards
