Why SLT ADSL is Slow? (Guess I Found The Reason)

Many Users complaining that SLT ADSL is very slow since last 1 or 2 months.. It takes an age to load youtube videos. Some pages doesn't load at the first attempt and have to refresh the browser to get the page. I was wondering why.

Today, i guess i found the reason: I found that KALINGA also confirmed it in his twitter post..

The reason is: SLT uses software called "Squid" to block so called "porn sites". I have reasonable evidence for my claim, but wish if some technical expert can explain this better...

Squid is a proxy software which can also use to block sites. Squid also claims to "speed up" internet.. but there are examples of it causing slow downs (http://forum.pfsense.org/index.php?topic=15615.0 http://forum.pfsense.org/index.php?topic=7186.msg40734)

If my claim is true, SLT users should do something against thos stupid move.. People can't afford such a huge speed drop for so called "pron ban"

If it is happens due to squid, It should be running on Transparent Proxy Mode.

So here is the possible issue to SLOW DOWNLOADS.

1. Server is not able to cater heavy load
- Need More RAM
- HDD Space for Caching
- Need More CPU

2. Squid Configuration ISSUES

3. Server Not Running with Multi-pal Network Cards
- At least 4 1 Gbps network card required to handle this kind of traffic

4. Squild rules (ACLs) set with regxp mode insted of dst domain
- regxp mode can block url with name based ( ex if you set regex as sex , it will block all urls that contains sex ex: thesex.com , google.com/?q=sex, etc)
- dstdomain mode wil block only listed domains (ex. .yahoo.com will block whole yahoo.com domain, mail.yahoo.com rule only will not block other urls)

1. For Airtel Data (Unlimited)
1* STM1 Link (~150Mbps)

2. For Normal Packages
2* STM1 Links

So its having good speed
