US First Lady Michelle Obama said today that although she strives to give her daughters normalcy, she has forbidden them from joining their peers on Facebook.
Appearing on the Today show, ostensibly to discuss her push for better school nutrition and her Let's Move campaign, Mrs Obama instead ran into a string of questions about her family life and child rearing.
"I'm not a big fan of young kids having Facebook," the first lady said curtly. "It's not something they need. It's not necessary."
She would not commit to allowing Sasha, 9, and Malia, 12, to sign up on the social networking website before Mr Obama's term ends, whether in two years or six.
Sasha is the youngest child to live in the White House in half-a-century.
"It depends on when we leave and how old they are," she said.
Mrs Obama would not say whether her concerns were guided by a general wariness toward Facebook, which has more 600 million members worldwide, or simply protectiveness for her high profile family.
Both of her daughters attend the ritzy Sidwell Friends private school in Washington, DC, long the home for the children of the capital's elite.
